(07/079) Detained Mayor in Istanbul…

Özgür Kabadayı, elected mayor of Şile district of Istanbul from Republican People’s Party, is detained on July 10, 2025.

(07/080) Detained Mayor and Municipal Administrators in Antalya…

16 of 34 people including Niyazi Nefi Kara, Mayor of Manavgat district of Antalya and municipality executives who were detained on July 4, 2025 and following days, were released on judicial control conditions by the Criminal Judgeship of Peace on July 9, 2025. Previously 19 people including Niyazi Nefi Kara were arrested through the same investigation.

(07/081) Child Arrested in Istanbul for Insulting the President in Social Media Posts…

A 16-year-old boy who was detained on July 8, 2025 on the allegations of insulting the President on social media posts was arrested by the Criminal Court of Peace on July 9, 2025. The name of the arrested child could not be learned.

Bekir Aslan, who was detained on July 8, 2025 on the grounds of insulting the President in social media posts, is arrested by the criminal court of peace on July 9, 2025.

(07/083) Investigation Against Mayor…

On July 9, 2025 it is learned from news coverage of July 9, 2025 that Rize Pazar Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Şahin Çervatoğlu, mayor of Fındıklı district of Rize, on the grounds of ‘publicly insulting the Turkish Nation, the State of the Republic of Turkey, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the judicial organs of the State’ for his social media post about journalist Fatih Altaylı’s arrest.

(07/084) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against journalist Nevşin Mengü due to a news report she published on Hulusi Akar, the chair of the National Defense Commission of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, was held on July 9, 2025 at Ankara  Civil Court of First Instance N. 41. The court ruled Nevşin Mengü to pay 30.000 TL non-pecuniary damages to Hulusi Akar.

(07/085) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against journalist Geşbun Ayşe Kara continued on July 10, 2024 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5. The indictment demands sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The court rejected the demand to take the journalist’s statement from abroad, ruled to await the outcome of the arrest warrant for Geşbun Ayşe Kara and adjourned the trial to December 25, 2025.

The final trial of the case against journalist Geşbun Ayşe Kara, on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ through Democratic Society Congress (DTK) investigation, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on November 9, 2021 and the court acquitted the journalist. Following the objection of Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, the acquittal verdict was overturned by the 2nd Criminal Chamber of Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals on the grounds of ‘incomplete investigation’ and ‘insufficient research’.

(07/086) Writer on Trial in Istanbul…

The retrial of the case against writer Yavuz Ekinci, on the grounds of his book ‘Rüyası Bölünenler’ published by Doğan Kitap in 2014, started on July 9, 2025.  The court adjourned the hearing to October 6, 2025.

On March 14, 2023, Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No 7 issued a ban on printing, distribution and sale of the book and issued a confiscation order.

(07/087) Party Co-Chair and Other People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Co-Chair Hatice Deniz Aktaş, Ebru Yiğit, Nurcan Güllübudak and Mert Unay continued on July 9, 2025 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14. The indictment demands sentence for 4 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The court decided to continue detention of Hatice Deniz Aktaş and house confinement of Mert Umay and adjourned the trial to September 10, 2025.

Hatice Deniz Aktaş was arrested on January 24, 2025.

 (07/088) Suspended Mayor…

On July 9, 2025, the Ministry of Interior dismissed Adana Metropolitan Mayor Zeydan Karalar, who was arrested on July 8, 2025, and Ahmet Şahin, who was elected by the municipal council to replace Büyükçekmece Mayor Hasan Akgün, also arrested on July 8, 2025.
