(07/114) Soldiers Died in Sakarya…

It is learned that 3 soldiers died and 12 people including 11 soldiers got wounded due to an explosion that took place on July 9, 2020 at the truck carrying the fireworks that did not explode in the blast in a firework factory in Hendek district of Sakarya on June 3, 2020. It is learned that the explosion occurred during taking off the fireworks from the military vehicle which was carrying them to a stone pit in Adapazarı district for annihilating.

(07/115) Police Intervention Against Bar Associations’ Protest in Ankara…

On June 9, 2020, the police used barriers to enclose bar associations’ chairs who was on watch at Kuğulu Park, Ankara to protest the legislative bill about bar associations which was being considered at the Grand National Assembly.

It is learned that the police prevented journalists from going near the chairs of bar associations except for those who have accredited yellow and turquoise press cards.

The police used physical violence against lawyers who wanted to get in the area where chairs of bar associations were having the protest. It is learned that some of parliamentary members there were also subjected to physical violence of the police.

The police intervened the lawyers on Tunus Street while marching to Grand National Assembly on June 10, 2020. It is reported that lawyers marched to Ankara Court House after prevention.

(07/116) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1339 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on July 9, 2020 at 13.30 and at 18.00 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(07/117) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Düzce…

On July 9, 2020, the police intervened the press declaration of Alev Şahin in order to regain her job from which she was dismissed by a state of emergency decree, in front of Düzce Governorate and detained her. Alev Şahin was released on the same day.

(07/118) Co-Mayor on Trial in Şırnak…

The final trial of the case against Mehmet Zırığ, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-mayor of Cizre district of Şırnak, on the grounds of ‘praising offense and offender’ in a speech he made at a meeting, is held at Cizre Penal Court of First Instance No 3 on July 9, 2020. The court acquitted Mehmet Zırığ.

Ministry of Interior has appointed a trustee to Cizre Municipality on October 22, 2019.

(07/119) Co-Mayor on Trial…

The trial of the case against Ayhan Bilgen, Kars co-mayor, for being a member of editorial board of Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 24 on July 9, 2020.

After defence hearings the court decided to send the case file to the prosecutor for legal opinion and adjourned the trial to October 15, 2020.

(07/120) HDP Executive on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Bülent Uyguner, a former member of HDP’s Party Assembly is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32 on July 9, 2020.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for Bülent Uyguner on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The court decided to continue detention of Bülent Uyguner and adjourned the trial to August 11, 2020.

Bülent Uyguner was detained on November 26, 2019 and was arrested by the court on November 28, 2019.

(07/121) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Can Dündar, former executive editor of Cumhuriyet newspaper for publishing the footage of MIT (National Intelligence Service) trucks stopped in Adana and Hatay on January 19, 2014, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14 on July 9, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for Can Dündar on the charges of ‘securing confidential for the purpose of espionage’ and ‘aiding an illegal organization’.

The court decided to send the case file to the prosecutor for legal opinion and adjourned the trial to February 18, 2021.

(07/122) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case on reciprocal claims of damages of Oda TV Ankara news editor Müyesser Yıldız and Ministry of National Defence Hulusi Akar is held at Ankara Dışkapı Civil Court of First Instance No 7 on July 9, 2020.

In 2018, Hulusi Akar has filed a lawsuit against Müyesser Yıldız, demanding 250.000 Turkish Liras for compensation for she made a news report on statements on Hulusi Akar of an anonymous witness of a case on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 17; and Müyesser Yıldız filed a lawsuit demanding 5 Turkish Liras and two cases were consolidated.

It is learned that Müyesser Yıldız’s demand to join the trial via sound and vision system from prison since she was arrested through another case on June 12, 2020, was rejected by the court. It is also reported that the chief judge ordered Müyesser Yıldız’s defence were not be heard but only be given in written form.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to September 10, 2020.

(07/123) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Yetkin Yıldız, executive editor of Aktifhaber news portal, on the charges of ‘insult’ and ‘calumny’ for a news report, is held at Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 31 on July 9, 2020.

The court adjourned the trial to December 8, 2020.

(07/124) Hrant Dink Murder Case…

The case against 85 people (4 arrested) including security, national intelligence and gendarmerie personnel, on the grounds of being responsible and negligent on the murder of Hrant Dink, executive editor of Agos newspaper, is held on July 7-9, 2020 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14.

The court rejected to hear Hüseyin Kubilay Günay, Özel Yılmaz and Handan Selçuk, former officers of National Intelligence Organisation back then, as witnesses. The court decided to send a writ to National Intelligence Organisation Directorate for hearing MIT Regional Director Ahmet Köksoy as witness, and to call him to testimony in case of permission.

The court decided to continue detention of Ramazan Akyürek, Ali Fuat Yılmazer, Muharrem Demirkale and Ercan Gün and adjourned the trial to September 16, 2020.

(07/125) Ali El Hemdan Case…

The first trial of the case against police officer F. K. for death of Syrian citizen Ali El Hemdan (19) is held at Adana Heavy Penal Court No 9 on July 9, 2020. Ali El Hemdan was killed by police gunshot in Seyhan district of Adana on April 27, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for police officer F. K. on the charge of ‘intentional killing’.

Police officer F. K. joined the trial via sound and vision system from prison.

The court rejected demands of Adana Bar Association, Izmir Bar Association, Human Rights Association, Association of Human Rights and Solidarity for Oppressed People, Progressive Lawyers’ Association and HDP Law Commission to participate in trials.

  1. D., a witness who was heard at the trial stated the following: “I was sitting on the balcony. He said ‘stop’ twice. The kid stopped. Took two steps back. And stepped back when he said stop. A gunshot came then. I did not understand what was happening. Then he came near the kid, and asked ‘Why are you running away?’. But the kid did not run away. He was not running but walking when the police said him to stop. He said ‘stop’ twice. And turned back, took two steps back. When I looked at them the police officer was holding the gun. Then he came near the kid who was in the death agony.”

After statements the court decided to continue detention of the police officer and adjourned the trial to November 13, 2020.

It is learned that a news reports on https://halktv.com.tr/ and a video on Halk TV Youtube channel is banned to access by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace No 3 on July 9, 2020.

It is learned that 124 web addresses are banned to access by Kocaeli Penal Court of Peace No 2 on July 1, 2020.

(07/127) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against Mehmet Topdemir is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 25 on July 9, 2020. The court sentenced the defendant to 10 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and decided to continue detention.

The final trial of the case against Zeynep Gülen, Fethullah Gülen’s niece, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 36 on July 9, 2020. The court sentenced the defendant to 2 years 7 months and 7 days for ‘aiding an illegal organisation’.

(07/128) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 18 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,024 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on July 9, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 5,300 and total number of confirmed cases is 209,962 as of July 9, 2020.
