(01/071) Prisoners and Soldiers Wounded in Diyarbakır…

On January 10, 2024, 23 people, including 11 prisoners and 12 military personnel, were wounded in a car accident in Diyarbakır Silvan police station.

(01/072) People Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment by the Police in Hakkari…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 10, 2024, that 4 people (İdris Kurt, Sıtar Kurt, Canan Kurt, Sabiha Kurt) were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during a house raid in Yüksekova district of Hakkari.

The following statements were made by the four individuals to the press:

Idris Kurt: “I asked the police if they had a search warrant and they insulted me and threatened me with death by putting a gun to my head. I was dragged down the stairs for two floors by masked men. I was subjected to severe beatings and ill-treatment. They put a gun to my head and handcuffed me behind my back. The police officers kept threatening me saying ‘we will kill you’. They shot several times (…) I fainted due to the beatings. I don’t remember exactly what happened. They kicked me in the head several times and hit me with the butt of the gun.”

Sıtar Kurt: “As soon as they took me out of the house, I was beaten all the way outside. The police officer downstairs told us, ‘Who are you to ask for a search warrant? I am from the special operations. How dare you disobey us’. They repeatedly hit me in the stomach with a buttock. They made me lie on my back and climbed on top of me.”

Canan Kurt: “I was brought inside after being beaten. My children who reacted to the police were also beaten. 3 policemen each stepped on each of my children with their feet and did not allow them to move. A 5-year-old girl was thrown a sound bomb. They were shooting randomly and shouting and screaming.”

Sabiha Kurt: “After firing a few shots, the special operations police put the gun to my chest. After the torture, ill-treatment and beatings, plain clothes police officers came in as if nothing had happened. Even the police officers who entered did not say anything about the raid.”

(01/073) People Detained in Tunceli…

On January 10, 2024, 2 people were detained in house raids in Pertek district of Tunceli on the allegations of making propaganda for an illegal organisation on social media. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

(01/074) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against journalists Pınar Gayıp, Eylem Nazlıer, Esra Soybir, Serpil Ünal, Yadigar Aygün and Zeynep Kuray, who were detained during the police intervention against the press statement held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on April 29, 2023 to protest the detention of journalists in Diyarbakır and Ankara based investigations, started on January 10, 2024 at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 22. After the defences, the court adjourned the hearing to April 16, 2024.

The trial of the case against journalist Ceren Sözeri due to the complaint of Serhat Albayrak, Deputy Chair of Turkuvaz Media Group, for her article titled “Who made AKP lose votes” continued on January 10, 2024 at Istanbul Commercial Court of First Instance No 2. The court adjourned the hearing to September 11, 2024.

(01/076) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

On January 9, 2024, the first trial of the case against journalist Emre Orman, who was detained and subjected to torture and ill-treatment while covering the Sivas Massacre Commemoration in Sancaktepe district of Istanbul on July 2, 2022, started at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 20 on the charge of ‘resisting to prevent duty’. After the defences, the court adjourned the hearing to May 21, 2024.

(01/077) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The final hearing of the case against Cumhuriyet Newspaper’s editor-in-chief Mustafa Büyüksipahi and the newspaper’s managing editor Mustafa Birol Güger, upon the complaint of Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank, for a news article in the newspaper, was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on January 9, 2024. The court acquitted 2 journalists.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 9, 2024, that an investigation was initiated against journalist Zeynep Kuray, who was subjected to physical intervention of the gendarmerie while she was following the demonstration in Akbelen Forests in Muğla, on the grounds of her posts on physical violence.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 9, 2024, that journalist Osman Çaklı is subjected to an investigation on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in his news reports.

(01/080) Person Under Investigation in Batman…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 10, 2024, that an investigation was initiated against a person named Vedat Özer for accompanying a song with erbane at the 6th Ordinary Congress of Democratic Regions Party (DBP) and that Vedat Özer gave his official statement through the investigation at Batman Provincial Security Directorate on January 3, 2024.

(01/081) Ban of Access to Web Content…

It is learned that news reports on https://www.yenisafak.com, https://www.medyaradar.com websites about Justice and Development Party (AKP) Muğla Metropolitan Municipality Mayor candidate were banned to access by Access Providers’ Association on January 5, 2024, on the grounds that they contain the same content as the news reports that were sanctioned before, and it was ruled to delete these news reports.

It is learned that a news report and 1 social media post about the Ministry of National Education on https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr website was banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Diyarbakır Criminal Peace Judgeship No 4 on January 9, 2023.

(01/082) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Coup Attempt…

On January 10, 2024, 38 people were detained in operations organized in 12 provinces.
