(01/067) Person Died by Police Fire in Edirne…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 9, 2023 that, a person named Sedat Türkmen who was wounded by the fire opened by the police on a vehicle on the grounds of “disobeying stop warning” in Uzunköprü district of Edirne, died in hospital.

(01/068) Ill Prisoner Died…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 9, 2023 that, Hamdin Ördek, an ill prisoner who was released from Giresun Espiye L Type Prison on December 29, 2022, lost his life on January 4, 2023.

Hamdin Ördek’s daughter Elif Ördek stated the following to the press: “When he was released he told ‘I was tortured, I was in a solitary cell for days’, he said he was put in a solitary cell for hymning. He also told us that the doctors there was ill-treating him, and he harmed himself because of the psychological violence in prison”.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 9, 2023 that, a prisoner Muhammed Kartal was transferred from Diyarbakır High Security Prison No. 1 to Antalya High Security Prison under coercion.

(01/070) Police and Gendarmerie Intervention to Funeral in Muş…

It is learned that 20 of 31 people who was detained by the gendarmerie intervening in those who gather for the funeral ceremony in Muş on January 5, 2023, for musician Mîr Perwer (Mehmet Şirin Aydın) who lost his life in the armed attack on Ahmet Kaya Kurdish Cultural Center in Paris, France on December 23, 2022, were released after statement procedures on January 9, 2023. 1 person was released after statement procedures on January 5, 2023, and 10 people were released on January 7, 2023.

Journalist Sezgin Kartal is detained by the police raiding his house in Istanbul on January 10, 2023. The reason for detention is unknown.

(01/072) Detained People in Mersin…

It is learned that 3 of 8 people (Cafer Adsay, Agit Adsay and Hamdullah Özen) who were detained in Mersin on January 6, 2023 are arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on January 9, 2023. 5 people are released on judicial control conditions.

(01/073) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist Ender İmrek over his article titled “Turkey is burning, the Palace is watching” published on Evrensel newspaper, is held at Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No. 44 on January 10, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Ender İmrek on the charge of ‘insulting the President’. The court acquitted Ender İmrek.

(01/074) Documentary Director on Trial in Ankara…

The indictment prepared by Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against the documentary director Sibel Tekin, who was detained in Ankara on December 16, 2022 and arrested by the court on December 17, 2022, was accepted by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 26 on January 9, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Sibel Tekin on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The first trial of the case will be held on February 23, 2023.

(01/075) The Case of Police Violence to Journalist…

The final trial of the case at Istanbul Administrative Court No. 8 regarding the police violence against journalist Bülent Kılıç, during the 19th Istanbul Pride Parade on June 26, 2021 is held on January 9, 2023. The court ruled that Bülent Kılıç should be paid 30,000 Turkish Liras for “disproportionate use of force”.

(01/076) Police Officer on Trial in Batman…

The trial of the case against a police officer regarding the incident in Batman Courthouse on April 14, 2022 where lawyer Orhan Alphan was subjected to physical violence of the police officers, is held at Batman Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on January 9, 2023. The defendant police officer did not attend the trial. The court rejected the demand for referring Orhan Alphan to the Forensic Medicine Institution, and decided to send the case to the prosecutor for legal opinion and adjourned the trial to January 20, 2023.

(01/077) Torture Order by the Minister of Interior…

Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu, in his speech at the meeting “The best narcotics policeman, Mother” held on January 9, 2023 in Istanbul, stated the following: “I am saying it again here. If they get angry with me, they will be angry (…) our police officers who see the drug dealer in front of the schools, should do what is necessary. Break their feet. It’s that clear and obvious.”

The Minister of the Interior made a similar statement on January 3, 2018 and said, “When we see a drug dealer around the school, no matter how much they condemn me, no matter how much they criticize me, the police officer who does not break that drug dealer’s foot is not doing their duty. (…) I have been giving this instruction to my friends for a year and a half. Do it when you find them. (…) No matter what the security officer does to a drug dealer, I am taking the responsibility for it.” and said on October 8, 2022: “I repeat, I am giving instructions to our security forces again. Break the feet of the drug dealers at the moment you find them.”

(01/078) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

It is learned that 16 people were detained in operations covering 4 cities through an Istanbul based investigation and 12 people were detained in Ankara on January 10, 2023.

(01/079) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The retrial of the case against 37 people including former Bursa governor Şehabettin Harput, after the Court of Cassation overturned the verdict of the local court, is held at the Penal Chamber No. 2 of Bursa Regional Court of Justice on January 9, 2023. The court sentenced 28 defendants, including Şehabettin Harput, to prison terms ranging from 8 years 9 months to 1 year 10 months and 15 days on the charge of “being an illegal organisation member”. The court decided to acquit 8 defendants and to separate the file against 1 defendant.
