(02/105) Person Died by Police Fire in Istanbul…

It is learned that, a person named Y. A. who got wounded by the police opening fire on a car on the grounds of ‘disobeying stop warning’ in Bakırköy district of Istanbul on February 9, 2022, lost his life in hospital.

Istanbul Governorate’s Office made the following declaration: “Today at around 15.00, the police team at the control point in Bakırköy district has verbally warned the car that did not stopped. Despite all warnings and chase, the car went in the E-5 South direction, and as the driver showed the gun in his hand, the personnel in charge opened fire to warn the person and stop the car. The car stopped after colliding other cars around, and the person (S. K.) who fled on foot from the car was caught by the officers. After the examination, it was found that the other person (Y. A.) who was in the front passenger seat was injured by a firearm bullet and he was immediately transferred to the hospital, but he died in the hospital despite all the efforts. An investigation into the incident has been initiated.”

It is learned that 2 police officers were detained.

(02/106) Person Died in Prison…

It is learned that Isa Yaşar (57), a prisoner in Kırıkkale Keskin T Type Prison lost his life on February 6, 2022.

His son stated the following to the press: “My dad’s heart has stopped as he was admitted to a hospital. He has died on 21.15 but we were informed at 22.21, we were faced with a funeral vehicle as we went to the hospital.”

(02/107) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 9, 2022 that, the phone call duration is reduced to 10 minutes and contact visit duration is reduced to 30 minutes in Istanbul Silivri T Type Prison No 5. It is also stated in the news reports that the video call booths are installed only in the wards of non-political prisoners.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 9, 2022 that, prisoners have to drink tap water as the drinking water given to prisoners in Istanbul Silivri T Type Prison No 2 is limited.

(02/108) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 9, 2022 that, 3 people (S. A., M. A. and D. A.) were subjected to physical violence and threats of the police officers with whom they had an argument in front of their workplaces in Kayapınar district of Diyarbakır on February 7, 2022. It is also stated in the news reports that; 3 people were subjected to verbal violence at the police station.

M. A. stated the following to the press: “They told us we were suspects and they would do body search. We were okay with that, a police officer with glasses insulted us. He pushed us to the wall and kicked us. Then my uncle came and they insulted him too.”

S. A. stated the following: “The police pushed us to the wall during body search, and a police officer held his gun to my chest. As we reacted their insults, another police officer with his gun in the hand came. He held his gun to my chest and said he would kill me. He said they were the state and nobody can stop them. Another police officer said ‘We killed 50 people you would be the 51st person’ (…) They wanted us to sign a blank paper but we did not accept.”

(02/109) Racist Attack in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 9, 2022 that, 5 Egyptians were subjected to the attack of their neighbour (İ. B.) coming in their home in Bahçelievler district of Istanbul on February 6, 2022. It is reported that İ. B. was arrested in relation to the attack which injured 3 people.

Ahmed Muhammed Abdülazim stated the following to the press: “That night we were watching the football game of Egypt and Senegal. The neighbour across came when the game ended, he started to punch the door. He rushed into the apartment as we opened the door, and he had a knife. Everyone in the house ran away in different directions. One friend was hiding in a room, and the neighbour went there and punched that room’s door. Another friend pushed the neighbour and went downstairs, he was wounded at the hand. He attacked another friend, he could not harm him but only cut his t-shirt. Yousef Mohammed Elsayed could speak a little Turkish so he went to talk to this neighbour. Another man showed up and pushed Yousef to the wall, and the neighbour waved his knife. I don’t know the other person there.”

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on February 9, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on February 9, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(02/112) Police Intervention to a Protest in Mardin…

The police used pepper spray to intervene the protest against raise in electricity prices in Derik district of Mardin on February 9, 2022. It is learned that nobody was detained.

(02/113) Detained People for Social Media Posts…

32 people who were detained in Ankara, Antalya, Bursa, Çanakkale, İstanbul, İzmir, Karabük, Kocaeli, Samsun, Şırnak, Tekirdağ and Karaman, for their social media posts about the President’s health condition, are released by the court on February 9, 2022, provided that 6 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

(02/114) The Case Against Former HDP MP…

The trial of the case against Leyla Güven, HDP’s former Hakkari MP who has been stripped of MP status and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in a speech, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on February 9, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Leyla Güven on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

Leyla Güven joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. It is learned that another indictment was prepared against Leyla Güven. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to April 11, 2022.

(02/115) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Necla Tamriş, HDP co-mayor of Çınar district is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on February 9, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to March 25, 2022.

Necla Tamriş was dismissed from her post on June 15, 2021 by the Ministry of Interior.

(02/116) City Council Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Bahar Karakaş, a city council member from HDP in Eğil district, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on February 9, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to March 25, 2022.

Bahar Karakaş was dismissed from her post on June 15, 2021 by the Ministry of Interior.

(02/117) Journalist on Trial in Izmir…

The final trial of the case against Mezopotamya News Agency reporter Ruken Demir, on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 19 on February 9, 2022. The court acquitted Ruken Demir.

Ruken Demir was detained on November 12, 2019 and was arrested by the court on November 16, 2019. Ruken Demir was released at the first trial held on March 5, 2020.

The retrial of the case against actress Ezgi Mola, for a social media post about specialised sergeant Musa Orhan, who is charged with sexual assault to a child, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 31 on February 9, 2022. The court has sentenced Ezgi Mola to a penalty fine of 5,200 Turkish Liras on the charge of ‘insult’, and the court’s verdict was reversed. It is learned that Musa Orhan’s lawyer offered reconciliation for 50,000 Turkish Liras but Ezgi Mola refused the offer. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial.

A child named Ipek Er committed suicide after she was subjected to sexual assault by specialised sergeant Musa Orhan in Beşiri district of Batman, and lost her life in hospital on August 18, 2020.

It is learned that the website of Gazete Yolculuk https://www.yolculukhaber.net is banned to access by Hatay Penal Court of Peace No 1 on February 8, 2022.

(02/120) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 266 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 108,563 as of February 9, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 89,477 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 12,554,674 as of February 9, 2022.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 9, 2022 that, 3 prisoners including Ayşe Gökkan, spokesperson of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison have tested positive for Covid-19. It is also stated in the news reports that the correction officers do not follow social distance rules and those who tested positive were still on duty.
