(04/050) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Detention in Ankara…

It is learned from news coverage of April 10, 2025 that, 7 women who were detained in Ankara on March 22, 2025, on the grounds of participating in protests in Ankara to protest arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment including strip search at Ankara Provincial Security Directorate.

It is reported that Ankara Bar Association prepared a report by interviewing torture and ill-treatment survivors and filed a criminal complaint to Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office and requested the Ministry of Interior to initiate an administrative investigation.

Ankara Provincial Security Directorate made a statement on the allegations and stated that body searches and jail procedures were carried out in accordance with the “Regulation on Arrest, Detention and Statement Taking”, “Regulation on Forensic and Preventive Search” and “General Directorate of Security’s Jail Instructions”.

(04/051) Person Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment by the Police in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 9, 2025 that, an unidentified person was subjected to physical violence of the police in the security booth where he was taken during identity check at Söğütlüçeşme metrobus station in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on April 6, 2025.

(04/052) People Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment of the Police in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 9, 2025 that, on April 7, 2025, at Söğütlüçeşme metrobus station in Kadıköy district of Istanbul, 2 people were taken to the security booth after identity check and were told “you will be taken to a place where you will be beaten with a baton”. It is reported that 2 people who were released were stopped again and one of them was fined 3.500 Turkish Liras and the other was fined 70.000 Turkish Liras. The reason of the fine is not known.

(04/053) Journalists Detained in Istanbul…

Journalists Murat Ağırel and Timur Soykan were detained in a police raid at their homes in Istanbul on April 10, 2025 as part of an investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office following a complaint by the former owner of the Flash News TV channel. Journalists were released by the criminal court of peace on the same day with a ban on leaving the country and judicial control conditions.

(04/054) People Arrested in Istanbul

3 university students are detained in a police raid to their dormitories on April 9, 2025. It is learned that 3 people were detained on April 8, 2025 in Kadıköy district of Istanbul, for carrying a banner with the slogan “Dictator Erdoğan” on it. 3 people are arrested by the court on the same day on the charge of ‘insulting the President’. The names of 3 people could not be learned.

Artist Murat Germen was detained at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport on April 9, 2025 due to ‘inciting hatred and hostility among the public’. Murat Germen was released on April 10, 2025 after his statement to the prosecutor’s office.

(04/056) People Detained in Antalya for Social Media Posts…

On April 9, 2025, 4 people are detained in house raids in Antalya for their social media posts and are released after statement procedures at the police on the same day.

(04/057) Lawyer on Trial in Izmir for Social Media Posts…

The trial of the case against lawyer Sena Yazıbaglı for her social media posts continued on April 9, 2025 at Izmir Karşıyaka Penal Court of First Instance No 12. The court adjourned the trial to May 9, 2025.

(04/058) Indictment Against Bar Association Executive in Istanbul…

On April 9, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of April 9, 2025 that Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against Fırat Epözdemir, executive board member of Istanbul Bar Association. The indictment demands sentence for Fırat Epözdemir on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

Fırat Epözdemir was detained on January 23, 2025 and was arrested on January 25, 2025.

The final hearing of the case against Gülsüm Elvan and Sami Elvan, mother and father of Berkin Elvan, who died when a tear gas canister fired by the police hit his head during Gezi Park protests, was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 43 on April 9, 2025. The court sentenced Gülsüm Elvan to 11 months and 20 days and Sami Elvan to 1 year and 2 months for ‘insulting the President’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(04/060) People on Trial in Antalya…

The trial of the case against 4 people (Ahmet Çevik, Zeliha Şengöz, Gülnur Yılmaz and Taylan Ekici) started on April 10, 2025 at Antalya  Criminal Court of First Instance No 23 for participating in a press declaration during Antalya Pride Week 2024. The court acquitted 4 people at the first hearing after defenses.

(04/061) People on Trial in Eskişehir…

The trial of the case against 10 people who were detained during the police intervention against 2024 Eskişehir Pride March continued on April 9, 2025 at Eskişehir Penal Court of First Instance No 16. The indictment demands sentence for 10 people on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court adjourned the trial to April 30, 2025.
