(04/071) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 9, 2020 that, Burhan Özmüş, a prisoner in Izmir Aliağa Şakran T Type Prison No 3 was subjected to physical violence of the wardens. It is stated in the news reports that the doctor who examined Burhan Özmüş did not give him a medical report evidencing the violence and said “beater never gets hurt”. It is reported that Burhan Özmüş’s father made an official complaint to Izmir Public Prosecutor’s Office.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 9, 2020 that, phone conversation of a prisoner named Mehmet Faruk Engin in Osmaniye T Type Prison was interrupted after he says “there is mud in our food here” to his family.

(04/072) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 9, 2020 that, Mehmet Salih Filiz, a prisoner with cancer and tuberculosis in Izmir Ödemiş T Type Closed Prison was not taken to hospital, was not given the injection that he has to take once in every 14 days and was not given the food proper to diet programme approved by doctor.

It is claimed in the news coverage of April 9, 2020 that 6 prisoners suspected to be Covid-19 in Urfa Hilvan T Type Prison were not taken to hospital.

(04/073) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1248 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 9, 2020 at 13.30 and at 18.00, and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(04/074) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened members of Labour Movement Party (EHP) protesting the bill on unpaid time off for workers which will be discussed at the Grand National Assembly soon; on April 9, 2020 in front of Şişli Sub-Governorate building in Istanbul and detained 11 people. It is reported that the police used physical violence and handcuffed some people behind their backs during intervention. Detained 11 people are released after being fined for “violating social distancing rule”.

(04/075) Detained People in Diyarbakır…

On April 10, 2020, 5 people are detained in Diyarbakır related to the explosion which killed 5 people on road in rural areas of Güleç neighbourhood of Kulp district of Diyarbakır on April 8, 2020. It is learned that a warrant is issued for 1 people too.

(04/076) Detained Lawyer in Istanbul for Social Media Posts…

Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) member apprentice lawyer Yağız Timoçin is detained in Istanbul on April 9, 2020, on the charge of ‘provocation for violating laws’ for his social media post “we will not pay”. It is learned that Yağız Timoçin is in risk group for Covid-19 since he has chronic asthma and detention period for him is extended for 3 days, despite of this fact.

(04/077) Investigation Against a Journalist in Rize…

It is learned that Rize Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Gençağa Karafazlı, grant holder of Nabız local newspaper and Progressive Journalists Association Rize branch chair; Doğan Can, reporter of Nabız newspaper and Fehmi Demir, grant holder of www.flas53.com website, for news reports on Covid-19. It is learned that 3 people are called to give official statement.

(04/078) Case Against Co-Mayor…

The indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against Diyarbakır co-mayor Selçuk Mızraklı on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is accepted by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 28 on April 9, 2020. The first trial will be held on October 12, 2020.

(04/079) Ban of Events in Van…

Van Governorate made a declaration on April 6, 2020 and announced that, all open and indoor events such as demonstrations, press declarations, meetings, sit-ins, opening stands and tents, festivals, concerts, delivering leaflets and so on are banned for 15 days as of April 8, 2020. All events are banned in Van for 1249 days since November 21, 2016.

(04/080) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 96 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 4,056 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on April 9, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 908 and total number of confirmed cases is 42,282 as of April 9, 2020.
