It is learned from news coverage of April 9, 2018 that 2 days of solitary confinement given to Esma Yılmaz, former DBP Ömerli co-chair in Mardin who is kept in Urfa T Type Prison No 2 is approved. According to this approval it is reported that Esma Yılmaz will be put in solitary cell with her 9 months old baby with asthma.

It is learned from news coverage of April 9, 2018 that 4 prisoners from Tarsus T Type Women’s Prison went on an indefinite hunger strike on March 15, 2018. It is reported that the demand for the hunger strike is that isolation conditions of Abdullah Öcalan should end and military operation to Afrin should stop. The names of prisoners on hunger strike are: Kania Ağırman, Songül Coşkun, Şilan Çetiner and Fatma Berfe.

It is learned from news coverage that Adil Oktay has sent his book ‘Hapishanelere Esinti Yollayalım’ (Let’s Send a Breath to Prisons) to Ziya Ataman, reporter of Dicle News Agency that was closed down by the state of emergency decree, who is kept in Van Prison, but the book was not given to Ataman on the grounds that the book’s content was insulting and defaming state officials, and is baseless and groundless. It is reported that the book consists of letters written by prisoners from several prisons and controlled by prison commissions.
(04/099) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…
The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 9, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.
It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on April 9, 2018 2 people (Mehmet Dersulu, Nazan Bozkurt) and at 18.00 3 people (Acun Karadağ, Nazan Bozkurt and Selvi Polat) were detained.
Thus in total 5 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on April 9, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

2 executives of EMEP (Ankara city executive Rüstem Kahraman and Yenimahalle district executive Özlem Boyraz Özel) are detained on the grounds that they make propaganda of an illegal organisation in their social media posts, in house raids in Ankara on April 9, 2018.

It is learned that in house raids in Ankara on April 9, 2018, 7 members of FKF including central executive committee member Deniz Aydın are detained for making propaganda of an illegal organisation on social media posts.

4 of 15 people who were detained in Bulanık district of Muş on April 4, 2018 are arrested by the court for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on April 9, 2018, 11 of them are released. 1 person who was detained through the same investigation was arrested on April 7, 2018. The names of people arrested on April 9, 2018 are: Yakup Şahin, Fesih Çağlayan, Hikmet Aras and İbrahim Kaltuş.
It is learned that at least 7 people including an executive of Rojava Fraternity and Solidarity Association which was closed down by the state of emergency decree are detained in operations in Urfa since April 2, 2018. It is stated in news coverage of April 9, 2018 that the families of the detainees cannot select their own lawyers, have to accept the lawyers appointed by the bar and detainees are subjected to physical oppression. The names of detainees known so far are: former Urfa co-chair of DBP Celal Babacan, Adil Demir, executive of Rojava Fraternity and Solidarity Association which was closed down by the state of emergency decree and DBP members İbrahim Şimşek, İbrahim Kurt, Osman Büyükbaş, Emin Çetintaş and Ahmet İstek.

Freedom and Solidarity member Mahir Can Torunoğlu is detained after his house being raid in Sakarya on April 9, 2018 for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. It is learned that detention period is lasted to 7 days for Mahir Can Torunoğlu.

It is learned that special security units intervened the press release that was planned to be held in Eskişehir Anadolu University on April 9, 2018. The students attempted to protest the disciplinary proceeding against 3 students for attending a commemoration for Ali İsmail Korkmaz who was killed during Gezi protests in Eskişehir. It is reported that nobody was detained.

The case against 3 academics (Ass. Prof. Erhan Keleşoğlu, Research Assistant İrfan Emre Kovankaya, Ass. Prof. Sharo İbrahim Garip) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ continued to be held on April 9, 2018.
The court sentenced each of academics to 1 year and 3 months and postponed the sentences.
(04/106) Person on Trial in Van…
The final trial of the case against Ahmet Ataman on Van Heavy Penal Court No 5 is held on April 9, 2018. On November 18, 2016, Ahmet Ataman’s wife Hediye Ataman has lost her wife in the fire that broke out in the house where the police had an operation on the claim that ‘militants were inside’. Ahmet Ataman attended the trial via sound and vision system and made his defence. The court sentenced Ahmet Ataman to 10 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and 8 years 4 months for ‘keeping hazardous material without permission’.
On November 18, 2016, a house was raided by military and police forces in Erciş district of Van. It was claimed that the police have set the house on fire. Hediye Ataman, who was in the house and was not allowed to get out lost her wife. Hediye Ataman’s husband Ahmet Ataman, and her relatives Halit Ataman, Ömer Ataman, Suphi Ataman and Kamuran Yiğit were subjected to tphysical violence and detained by the police while they were trying to extungish the fire. The family has made a criminal complaint via their lawyers, however Erciş Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has verdicted on non-prosecution.

6 years’ jail sentence given to HDP Muş PM Burcu Çelik Özkan by Muş Heavy Penal Court No 1 was reversed by Penal Department No 2 of Erzurum Regional Court and the court verdict on re-trial of the case. Burcu Çelik Özkan attended the trial of the case held on Penal Department No 2 of Erzurum Regional Court on April 9, 2018 and made her defence. After the defence hearings the court sentenced Burcu Çelik Özkan to 5 years for ‘threatening under the cloak of intimidating power of an illegal organisation’, 1 year and 3 months for ‘making propaganda of an illegal organisation’ and 1 year and 10 days for ‘committing a crime on behalf of an illegal organisation without being a member’, which makes 7 years and 3 months and 10 days in total. The court decided on continuation of detention.
The case against HDP Mardin PM Gülser Yıldırım on Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 3 for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ is continued to be held on April 9, 2018. It is learned that the press was not allowed into the courtroom without any reason. Gülser Yıldırım attended the trial and made her defence. After the hearings the court adjourned the trial to April 19, 2018.

On April 9 2018, 9 people in operations covering 9 cities through a Manisa based investigation, 25 people in operations covering 13 cities through an Ordu based investigation, and 6 people in Marmaris are detained.
(04/109) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…
The case against journalist Nazlı Ilıcak on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26 on the claim that she shared classified material which was removed from Turkish Presidency of General Staff records and annihilated on her “Military Intelligence and Tahşiye Group” article on Bugün newspaper published on January 2, 2015, continued to be held on April 9, 2018. Nazlı Ilıcak attended the trial via sound and vision system from the prison and made her defence. After the defence hearings the court decided to submit the case file to the prosecutor’s office in order to prepare legal opinion and adjourned the trial.
(04/110) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…
The final trial of the case against 63 people from tank battalion of Mechanized Infantry Brigade Command No 28 on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 18 is held on April 9, 2018. The court sentenced 11 defendants to heavy life penalty for ‘violating the Constitution’, 27 defendants to life sentence and 14 defendants to 12 years and 6 months for the same reason. The court acquitted 11 defendants.
The final trial of the case against former prosecutor Mustafa Şahin who was dismissed by the state of emergency decree on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 23 is held on April 9, 2018. The court sentenced Mustafa Şahin to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being a member of illegal organisation’. The court also decided to release Mustafa Şahin under juridical control conditions.
