(11/001) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Siirt…

It is learned from the news coverage of 31 October 2024 that, 24 people who were detained on 29 October 2024 during the military operation on the rural areas of Pervari district of Siirt, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment at Siirt Provincial Gendarmerie Command.

(11/002) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on October 31, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(11/003) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of 31 October 2024 that, the police prevented the Republican People’s Party (CHP) party bus including Republican People’s Party (CHP) chair Özgür Özel from entering Esenyurt Cumhuriyet Square, and intervened against the group including CHP members with tear gas before the rally to protest the arrest of Esenyurt mayor and appointment of a trustee to the municipality. It is reported that no one was detained during the intervention.

(11/004) Press Worker Detained in Tunceli…

On 31 October 2024, Azime Bozkurt, a distributor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper in Tunceli, was detained on the allegation of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. Azime Bozkurt was released by the criminal peace judgeship on the same day on judicial control conditions including a ban on leaving the country and signing in every 2 weeks.

(11/005) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalists Pınar Gayıp, Eylem Nazlıer, Esra Soybir, Serpil Ünal, Serpil Ünal, Yadigar Aygün and Zeynep Kuray, who were detained during the police intervention against the press statement held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on 29 April 2023 to protest the detentions of journalists through Diyarbakır and Ankara based investigations, was held at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 22 on 31 October 2024. The court sentenced 6 journalists to 5 months each on the charge of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’. The court also decided to postpone the sentences given to Yadigar Aygün, Pınar Gayıp, Eylem Nazlıer, Esra Soybir, and Zeynep Kuray, and to convert the sentence given to Serpil Ünal into a judicial fine.

(11/006) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against Tigris News Editorial Coordinator Naci Sapan for his column titled ‘’Kayyımlar, kayyımcıklar!’ published on www.tigrishaber.com on 29 March 2023, was held on 1 November 2024 at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 5. The court sentenced Naci Sapan to a 2,700 TL judicial fine and deferred the announcement of the verdict on the charge of ‘insulting public officials working in committee due to their duties’.

(11/007) A Person on Trial in Urfa…

The case against Emine Şenyaşar, whose husband Hacı Esvet Şenyaşar and sons Adil and Celal Şenyaşar were killed after a quarrel between Justice and Development Party (AKP) MP candidate İbrahim Halil Yıldız and his bodyguards and shopkeepers in Suruç district of Urfa on June 14, 2018, on the grounds of insulting the President in her statements during the justice watch, started to be held at Urfa Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on October 31, 2024. After defence hearings, the court adjourned the trial to 19 March 2024.

(11/008) Person on Trial in Izmir…

The final trial of the case against 1 person named Dilruba Kayserilioğlu, on the grounds of her statements in a street interview in Izmir, in which she criticized the ban of access on the social media platform Instagram, was held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 62 on 31 October 2024. The court sentenced Dilruba Kayserilioğlu to 11 months and 20 days of imprisonment for ‘insulting the President’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

Dilruba Kayserilioğlu was arrested on 12 August 2024 on the grounds of ‘inciting the public to hatred and hostility’ and ‘insulting the President’ due to her statements in the street interview and was released on 29 August 2024. In the lawsuit filed against her at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 35 on the grounds of ‘inciting the public to hatred and hostility’ and ‘publicly insulting a section of the public’, the court sentenced Dilruba Kayserilioğlu to 7 months and 15 days of imprisonment and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(11/009) A Journalist on Trial…

The trial of the case against journalists Tunca Öğreten and Murat Baykara for their documentary ‘Met Dead End’ started on 31 October 2024 at Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 13. The indictment demands a sentence for Tunca Öğreten and Murat Baykara on the charges of ‘encouraging drug use’ and ‘not reporting an offense’. Following the defense hearings, the court adjourned the trial to 25 March 2025.

(11/010) Fan Ban Decision against Amedspor…

According to the news coverage of 31 October 2024, Erzurum Provincial Sports Security Board has announced that a fan ban decision was taken for Amedspor on the grounds that ‘Erzurum is a province that stands out with its commitment to national and spiritual values and considering the socio-cultural structure of Erzurumspor FK fans, there may be material and moral damages in negative incidents that may occur, especially the safety of spectators and athletes’. It was reported on November 1, 2024, that Amedspor filed an annulment lawsuit against the decision at Erzurum Administrative Court, demanding a stay of execution.
