(11/001) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of November 1, 2023, that Salman Yıldız, an ill prisoner in Muğla E Type Prison, was put in a single room.

(11/002) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Eskişehir…

The police intervened against a demonstration in Eskişehir on October 31, 2023 to protest the youth suicides and the death of 1 person in Güzelhisar Girls’ Dormitory in Aydın on October 26, 2023 due to the fall of a malfunctioning elevator and detained 4 people (Mert Adıgüzel, Cem Boran Kartal, Mirza Ali Demirağaç and İbrahim Erdem Alaaddinoğlu) by using physical violence.

T24 columnist Tolga Şardan was detained on November 1, 2023, for allegedly committing the crime of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ in his article titled “What’s in the judicial report submitted by MİT to the Presidency?”.

(11/004) Detained People in Karabük…

On October 31, 2023, 4 members of Left Party were detained for writing “Killer KYK” on the walls of Güzelhisar Girls’ Dormitory in Aydın on October 26, 2023, to protest the death of 1 person in Güzelhisar Girls’ Dormitory on October 31, 2023.

(11/005) Detained People in Şırnak…

On November 1, 2023, 5 people, including 2 children, were detained in house raids in the Silopi district of Şırnak. The reason for detention could not be learned. Names of the detained people are Hasan Azma, Mesut Avil, Serkan Bayrak, Y. S. and Y. P.

(11/006) Journalist on Trial in Bitlis…

The trial of the case against journalist Mehmet Şah Oruç continued on October 31, 2023, at Bitlis Heavy Penal Court No 2. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. After defences, the court released Mehmet Şah Oruç on judicial control condition and adjourned the trial to February 6, 2024. Mehmet Şah Oruç was arrested on April 27, 2023.

(11/007) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Sezgin Kartal, reporter of Karşı Mahalle news website, continued on October 31, 2023, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 22. The indictment demands a sentence for Sezgin Kartal on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court rejected to lift the travel ban on Sezgin Kartal and adjourned the trial to January 25, 2024. Sezgin Kartal was detained on January 10, 2023, arrested on January 13, 2023, and released on June 22, 2023.

(11/008) Former Mayor on Trial…

The final hearing of the case against Cabbar Leygara, former mayor of the Bağlar district of Diyarbakır, Cafer Kan, former  Diyarbakır provincial chair of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), and Edip Yaşar, former Diyarbakır branch chair of Municipalities and Local Government Workers Union (Tüm Bel Sen), through the investigation against Democratic Society Congress, was held on October 31, 2023, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4. The court sentenced Cafer Kan and Edip Yaşar to 6 years and 3 months each for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court acquitted Cabbar Leygara.

(11/009) The Main KCK Case…

The retrial of the case continued on October 31, 2023 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 2 following the reversal of the verdicts against 36 people, including politicians, in the case known as KCK Main Case. The court released Abdullah Bozkoyun, the only arrested defendant in the case, and adjourned the trial to a later date.

(11/010) Correction Officers on Trial in Adana…

In the case of torture and ill-treatment of a prisoner named Caner Şahin in Adana T Type Prison, Adana Penal Court of First Instance No 33 sent the case file to the Heavy Penal Court on the grounds that the act in question “could be torture” and decided on “lack of jurisdiction”. It is learned from the news coverage of October 30, 2023, that Adana Heavy Penal Court No 7 issued a decision of non-jurisdiction on the grounds that “the elements of the crime of torture did not occur and the incident was within the scope of the crime of simple injury”. It is reported that the file was sent to Adana Regional Court of Appeals for resolution of the conflict of jurisdiction.

(11/011) Ban of Access to Web Content…

It is learned that news reports on https://yeniyasamgazetesi5.com and https://artigercek.com websites about an Ezidi child under state protection were banned on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No 10 on October 30, 2023.

News reports on 2007 “Operation KALDIRIM” on https://www.birgun.net, https://www.evrensel.net, https://www.hurriyet.com.tr websites were banned from accessing on the grounds of ‘right to be forgotten’ by Urfa Siverek Penal Court of Peace on October 31, 2023.
