(03/001) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 28, 2022 that, in Düzce T Type Prison 25 prisoners are kept in wards for 8 people.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 28, 2022 that, 17 prisoners in Elazığ Women’s Prison including the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former Diyarbakır provincial co-chair Hülya Alökmen were transferred to other prisons under coercion. It is reported that Leyla Güven, Hülya Alökmen, Remziye Yaşar, Emine Erkan, Dilan Aydın and Necmiye Boz were transferred to Elazığ T Type Prison; Dicle Bozan, Beritan Anahtar, Songül Erden Şahin, and Zehra and Semra with unknown surnames were transferred to Kayseri Bünyan Women’s Closed Prison; Zilan Demir, Mizgin Ötatiz, Mihriban Şoğurli were transferred to Tarsus Women’s Closed Prison; Fethiye Ok, Nuray Çelik, Sevil Akkaya were transferred to Diyarbakır Women’s Closed Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 1, 2022 that, 7 prisoners in Diyarbakır T Type Prison No 3 were subjected to physical violence of the correction officers and were injured due to violence. Emre Can Ergün, one of the prisoners stated the following to the press: “Four correction officers stepped on our backs. We were physically attacked. They handcuffed us behind our backs and faced us down on the ground (…) The one who punched me 15 or 20 times was Cihan (…) They took Servet and me in the padded room. Servet was covered in blood. We were kept in the padded cell for 3 or 4 hours (…) Barış and Heybet was in the room number 2, they were treated the same way. Barış has epilepsy and we asked them to leave him alone. But they kept coming on us. They forced us to take off our clothes. They did not take me to the infirmary or to a hospital after that.” Rıdvan Tonka, another prisoner stated the following: “They constantly kicked my right leg, where there is a metal pin, my leg was swollen. And my chin hurt too much because of the punches.” Servet Özçelik stated the following: “They took us from our wards and put us on the ground of the aisle. They started cursing a friend while they were beating us. I turned around and reacted against them, and they kept beating me. And then they took us in the padded cell. We were handcuffed behind our backs and they took our clothes off, I was only in my shorts. They forced us down on the ground and beat us. We were in this room more than 3 hours. I was taken to the infirmary after that.” Barış Afşar, who has epilepsy, stated the following: “The violence caused bleeding in my lips, they put a face mask on me so that the blood would not be visible. I spitted out so the blood would be visible on cameras. I was not taken to a hospital. Although I made a criminal complaint they threatened me to send back to Tarsus.”

(03/002) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 25, 2022 that, a child (B. B.) of a prisoner kept in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison was not receiving necessary medication and has wounds because of it.

(03/003) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the demonstration of university students protesting the raises in electricity and gas prices on Istiklal Street in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on February 28, 2022 and detained 26 people by using physical violence. It is also learned that the police intervened those who record the intervention and moved them away. Detained people are released after statement procedures on the same day.

(03/004) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 213 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 64,275 as of February 28, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 94,445 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 14,089,456 as of February 28, 2022.
