(07/001) Attack on Leman Magazine…
It has been reported that a group consisting of members of the Great Eastern Raiders attacked the building of Leman Magazine in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul due to a cartoon published in the magazine’s issue dated June 26, 2025. The following statement was made in front of the building: “This is Muslim Anatolian soil. Let everyone remember this: Either we will leave, or they will leave. Either they will die, or we will die. The Messenger of Allah is more precious to us than our own lives. We are ready to give our lives and take lives for that light.”
It was also reported that a group attacked Leman Kültür in the Bakırköy district for the same reason.
News reports indicated that the attacks caused material damage to the buildings.
(07/002) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
According to news reports on June 30, 2025, a disciplinary investigation was launched against six prisoners held at Van T-Type Prison on the grounds that they celebrated Newroz and set fire to newspapers in the open-air space of the ward. As part of the investigation, two prisoners were sentenced to solitary confinement and four prisoners were deprived of their right to visitation on the grounds of “behaving in a manner that could create fear, anxiety, or panic within the institution.” As a result of the investigation, two prisoners were sentenced to solitary confinement and four were deprived of their right to visit.

On June 30, 2025, police intervened in a press statement planned by members of the Assembly of the Retireds walking from Istanbul to Ankara in Kurtuluş Park in the Çankaya district of Ankara, arresting eight people.

Police intervened in a march organized by members of the Private Sector Teachers’ Union who were marching to Ankara on July 1, 2025, at Kurtuluş Park in the Çankaya district of Ankara, and detained 23 people.
(07/005) Individuals Detained as Part of an Investigation Targeting the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality…
On July 1, 2025, 120 people, including former Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, Republican People’s Party Izmir Provincial Chairman Şenol Aslanoğlu, and former municipal executives, were detained on allegations of “corruption” and “irregularities” as part of an investigation into the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.
(07/006) Investigation into a Comic Magazine and Detain of Magazine Staff…
On June 30, 2025, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into Leman Magazine on the grounds of a cartoon published in its June 26, 2025, issue, alleging “insulting religious values” and “inciting the public to hatred and hostility.”
As part of the investigation, arrest warrants were issued for six individuals, including the cartoonist, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, and the responsible editor, and a seizure order was issued for the relevant issue.
As part of the investigation, cartoonist D.P., the magazine’s graphic designer C.O., the magazine’s editor-in-chief Z.A., and the magazine’s managing director A.Y. were detained on June 30, 2025. It was reported that four people were detained after being forced to the ground and handcuffed. It was reported that images of the cartoonist being pinned to the ground and handcuffed were shared on social media by the Minister of the Interior.
(07/007) Trial of Human Rights Defender in Istanbul…
The trial of human rights defender Nimet Tanrıkulu at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 24 continued on July 1, 2025. The indictment seeks to punish Nimet Tanrıkulu for “being a member of an illegal organization.” The court decided to continue the judicial control measures against Nimet Tanrıkulu and adjourned the hearing until October 7, 2025.
Nimet Tanrıkulu was detained in Istanbul on November 26, 2024, and arrested in Ankara on November 29, 2024, where she was taken. She was released at the hearing on March 4, 2025.
(07/008) Trial of Journalists in Istanbul…
The trial of Uğur Koç, the publishing coordinator of the BirGün newspaper website, and Yaşar Gökdemir, its editor-in-chief, began on June 30, 2025, at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 23, on charges related to a news story about a visit made by the Sabah newspaper to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor on February 8, 2025. The indictment seeks the punishment of the journalists for the crime of “targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism.” The court rejected the request to lift the travel ban on the two journalists and postponed the hearing to September 22, 2025.
(07/009) Persons on Trial in Istanbul…
The trial of 139 persons who participated in protests against the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu continued on June 30, 2025, at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No 49. The indictment seeks the punishment of the 139 individuals for “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911.” The court decided to file a criminal complaint with the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding allegations of torture and other ill-treatment of those detained and adjourned the trial until December 4, 2025.
(07/010) Lawsuit to Cancel the CHP Congress…
The trial of the case filed at the Ankara Civil Court of First Instance No. 42 seeking the cancellation of the 38th Ordinary Congress held on November 4-5, 2023, and the 21st Extraordinary Congress held on April 6, 2025, by the Republican People’s Party (CHP) continued on July 30, 2025. The court adjourned the hearing until September 8, 2025.
(07/011) Prison Massacre Case…
In order to facilitate transfers to F-type prisons and end hunger strikes, 32 people were killed during the “Return to Life” operation carried out in 20 prisons on December 19, 2000. The trial of 196 people who were serving in the Gendarmerie Command at the time, in connection with the deaths of 12 people and the injury of 29 others in the operation known as “Return to Life”, which was carried out in 20 prisons on December 19, 2000, in order to transfer prisoners to F-type prisons and end hunger strikes, continued on June 30, 2025, at the Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No. 13. The court adjourned the hearing until November 17, 2025.
(07/012) Ban on Actions and Activities in the District…
The Beyoğlu District Governor’s Office announced on July 1, 2025, that all meetings, demonstrations, press statements, distribution of leaflets, sit-ins, and similar actions and activities in all open areas of the district were banned for one day starting from July 1, 2025.
(07/013) Internet Content Blocked…
According to news reports on July 1, 2025, access to the website https://leman.com.tr/ and the X social media account belonging to Leman magazine was blocked by a decision of the Istanbul Criminal Court of Peace No. 5 on July 1, 2025.
It was learned that access restrictions were imposed on two separate X social media accounts belonging to journalists Altan Sancar and Ali Macit under Article 8/A of Law No. 5651, citing national security and public order as grounds, and that Ali Macit’s account was made invisible from Turkey.
(07/014) Special Security Zone in Şırnak…
The Şırnak Governor’s Office announced on July 1, 2025, that the areas of Giresumunu Mountain, Eksikdağ, and Meydandağı, located within the borders of the central district and Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak Province, have been declared a temporary special security zone for two days from July 2, 2025, to July 3, 2025, and that entry into the area is prohibited.
