(02/001) Person Who Lost His Life in an Armed Attack in Istanbul…

It is learned that on January 31, 2024, Ramazan Pişkin, known as ‘Ramazan Hoca from Diyarbakır’, who attracted attention especially with his videos on religious issues, lost his life due to a knife attack of an anonymous person in Fatih district of Istanbul. It is reported that Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation and one person is detained.

(02/002) Former Political Party Executive Subjected to an Armed Attack in Antalya…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 31, 2024, that former IYI Party Manavgat district chair Hüseyin Ergen was attacked with a gun and wounded by an unknown person in Manavgat district of Antalya.

(02/003) Journalist Targeted and Threatened through Social Media…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 31, 2024, that Oktay Saral, Chief Advisor to the President of the Republic, targeted and threatened journalist Fatih Altaylı for the expressions he used while commenting on the news on social media.

Oktay Saral said the following in his statement: “Fatih Altaylı, the son of a vile demon disguised as a human being, probably thinks he lives in Holland or Denmark (…) This apostate nut who publicly insults Islam and the Qur’an must be dealt with before a second passes, otherwise unpleasant incidents may occur that will cause outrage among Muslims. This scoundrel, who has been traveling in this country as a spy disguised as a Muslim, must be caught and subjected to the harshest punishment.”

(02/004) Phobic and Discriminatory Remarks of a Mayor Candidate…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 28, 2024, that Birol Aydın, mayoral candidate of Saadet Party for Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, used discriminatory and phobic expressions at Saadet Party’s Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Candidate Presentation Meeting: “Istanbul has become like a geyser. The perversions called LGBTI have spread to every area” and used discriminatory and phobic expressions.

(02/005) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 31, 2024, that 3 prisoners (Mustafa Şıhi, Sedat Şimşek and Mazlum Taşkın) in Adana Kürkçüler F Type Prison were transferred to Burdur High Security Prison and 1 prisoner (Hasan Ateşçi) was transferred to Antalya High Security Prison against their will.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 1, 2024, that Ekrem Gün, a prisoner in Bandırma T Type Prison No 2 was threatened to death verbally and in writing by a prisoner named İ.Ö. in the next ward.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 1, 2024, that some of the women prisoners in Çorum L Type Prison are kept in rooms for 7 people with 28 people.

(02/006) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on February 1, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, to visit them was not responded to.

(02/007) Police Intervention against a Peaceful Demonstration in Van…

It is learned that the police used tear gas to intervene against the ‘Great Freedom March’, which was planned to be organized in Van on February 1, 2024, by executives and members of political parties and non-governmental organizations such as Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) and MPs, to demand an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and a solution to the Kurdish issue; and detained at least 4 people. After statement procedures at the police station, 2 of 4 detainees (Harun Çavğun and Mehmet Halis Saykan) were released on judicial control condition on the same day.

(02/008) Police Blockade against a Press Statement in Kars…

It is learned that the police blockaded the hotel where a press conference was held by executives and members of political parties and NGOs including Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK), Democratic Islamic Congress (DIK), Association of Families of Prisoners and Prisoners (TUHA-DER) and other political parties and NGO executives and members of parliament before the ‘Great Freedom March’ which is planned to be held in Kars on February 1, 2024 in order to end the isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and solve the Kurdish issue.

(02/009) Prevention of the Justice Watch in Çağlayan Courthouse…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 1, 2024, that on February 1, 2024, the weekly Justice Watch for Can Atalay, Hatay MP of Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP), was prevented by private security guards blocking the stairs where lawyers gathered. This was later protested with a press statement outside the courthouse.

(02/010) Event Not Permitted by the Governorate of Muş…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 31, 2024, that DEM Party Muş Youth Assembly’s demand to open a stand in front of İstasyon Street Atatürk Children’s Park on January 28, 2024, in order to fight against drugs and prostitution was not allowed by Muş Governorate on the grounds of ‘security’.

(02/011) People Detained and Arrested in Izmir…

Didar Gül and Kerim Altınmakas, who were among the 5 people detained in house raids in Izmir on January 30, 2024, on the charge of ‘financing an illegal organization’, were arrested by the Criminal Peace Jusgeship. It is learned that Yaşar Aslan’s statement procedures are still ongoing and Gülseren Olgun and Vezan Özoğlu are released by the court on judicial control condition.

(02/012) People Detained in Istanbul…

On January 31, 2024, 2 members of Labour Youth were detained for putting up posters in Kadıköy district of Istanbul, about the impeachment of Can Atalay, Hatay MP of Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP). The names of detained people could not be learned.

(02/013) Journalist on Trial on the Grounds of a Social Media Post in Mardin…

The final trial of the case against journalist Ahmet Kanbal, on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ through a social media post, was held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2 on February 1, 2024. The court acquitted Ahmet Kanbal.

(02/014) Journalists on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against 18 journalists continued on February 1, 2024 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4. The court rejected to lift the judicial control measures against the journalists and adjourned the trial to May 9, 2024.

(02/015) Journalist Under Investigation…

Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against journalist Çiğdem Toker on February 1, 2024, on the grounds of her comments on a TV channel. It is learned that journalist gave her statement at Kavaklıdere Police Station in Ankara.

(02/016) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalist Dilan Esen, on the charge of ‘publicly insulting a public officer for his duty’ for an article she wrote in Birgün Newspaper on August 12, 2022, continued on January 31, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The court adjourned the hearing to March 26, 2024.

(02/017) The Case of the Ankara Pride March…

On January 31, 2024, Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 52 continued to hear the case against 42 people who were detained with torture and ill-treatment during the Pride March in Ankara on July 5, 2022, on the allegations of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’, ‘resisting to prevent the execution of duty’, ‘insult’ and ‘simple injury’. The court decided to prepare a new expert report and adjourned the trial to May 8, 2024.

(02/018) Students on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against 8 people who were detained while protesting ‘women’s university’ practice in Ankara on February 16, 2021, was held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’ on January 31, 2024. The court adjourned the hearing to June 27, 2024.

(02/019) Event and Demonstration Bans…

Governorate of Bitlis announced on February 1, 2024, that demonstrations, outdoor and indoor meetings, press declarations, sit-ins and surveys, setting up/opening tents and stands, organizing petitions, distributing leaflets and flyers and all kinds of protest activities are banned for 4 days between February 1, 2024 and February 4, 2024.

Governorate of Kars Governorate announced on January 30, 2024, that all gatherings, marches, press declarations, vehicle convoys, all kinds of welcoming and seeing off, indoor meetings, hunger strikes, sit-in protests, rallies, opening stands, setting up tents, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and posters will be banned for 5 days between January 31, 2024 and February 4, 2024.

(02/020) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Coup Attempt…

Through a Konya based investigation, 1 person was detained through an operation in Ankara on February 1, 2024, taken to Konya and arrested by the court.
