(02/001) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 31, 2023 that, a prisoner named Mustafa Karakoç in Samsun Bafra T Type Prison was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the correction officers.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 1, 2023 that, a prisoner named Cemal Güzel Bizci in Manisa E Type Prison was subjected to torture and ill-treatment and racist expressions of the correction officers.

 (02/002) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned that 3 prisoners (Erdal Emeç, Aydın Oğuz, Ahmet Budak) who are on the 55th day of the hunger strike in turns which they started to demand an end to right violations in Giresun Espiye L Type Prison, are on indefinite stable hunger strike as of January 31, 2023.

(02/003) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on January 31, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(02/004) Detained Journalist in Istanbul…

Yeni Yaşam newspaper’s employee Rojin Altay who was detained in Istanbul on January 28, 2023, was released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 1, 2023.

(02/005) Detained Person for Social Media Posts in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 31, 2023 that, a person named Aydın Aydoğan was detained on the grounds of an investigation against him for social media posts, at the gendarmerie check point in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) Prison where he went for visit on January 26, 2023.

(02/006) Özgür Gündem Case…

On November 3, 2020, the Penal Department No. 3 of Istanbul Regional Court has reversed the verdict of acquittal of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Turkey representative Erol Önderoğlu, writer Ahmet Nesin and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey chair and Turkish Medical Association (TTB) chair Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, in the “Özgür Gündem case”. On July 17, 2019, Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 13 have acquitted Erol Önderoğlu, Ahmet Nesin and Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı who were on trial for participating in “Editors in Chief on Watch” campaign to support Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree. The retrial of the case is held on February 1, 2023. It is learned that the request for recusation was rejected by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 14. The court adjourned the trial to May 25, 2023.

(02/007) Journalists on Trial in Van…

The trial of the case against Mezopotamya News Agency grant holder Ferhat Çelik and Jiyan TV grant holder İdris Yayla, is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on January 31, 2023. The case was opened for the news reports titled “It is the same prosecutor giving the detention order for journalists”, regarding the journalists who were detained after making news reports about the incident in Çatak district of Van where 1 person died and 1 person was injured as a result of being thrown from a helicopter. The indictment demands sentence for the journalists on the charge of ‘targeting officers who took charge in fight against terrorism’. It is learned that the journalist did not attend the trial. The court adjourned the trial to April 25, 2023.

(02/008) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

After the decision of acquittal in the case against journalist Zafer Arapkirli on the grounds of insulting in a social media post, was overturned by the Regional Court of Justice, the retrial is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 32 on January 31, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to May 3, 2023.

(02/009) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Ismail Çoban, former editor in chief of Azadiya Welat newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 5 on January 31, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for İsmail Çoban on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ over the news reports published on the newspaper between September 4 and October 21, 2014. İsmail Çoban did not attend the trial. The court adjourned the trial to April 11, 2023.

(02/010) Journalists and Writers on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Agos newspaper’s writer and Armenian pages’ editor Pakrat Estukyan, Cihan Doğan, lawyer Emran Emekçi, Mehmet Nimet Sevim and Demokratik Modernite magazine editor in chief Ramazan Yurttapan, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 30 on February 1, 2023. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to April 7, 2023.

(02/011) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalist Metin Cihan upon the complaint of former Minister Berat Albayrak is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 36 on February 1, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Metin Cihan on the charge of ‘insulting a public official due to their duty’. Metin Cihan did not attend the trial. The court adjourned the trial to May 4, 2023.

(02/012) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Cumhuriyet newspaper reporter Hazal Ocak, photographer Vedat Arık, executive editor Olcay Büyüktaş Akça and managing editor İpek Özbey, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 26 on February 1, 2023. The case was opened for the news reports about Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s demolishing of construction built in public property rented by Fahrettin Altun, Communications Director Republic of Turkey. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for journalists on the charges of ‘making a person target for terrorist organisations’ and ‘violation of privacy’. The court adjourned the trial to April 5, 2023.

(02/013) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

On February 1, 2023, the Penal Department No. 22 of Ankara Regional Court concluded on the appeal for the 10 months of sentence given by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 18 to journalist Alican Uludağ, for his social media posts about the former public prosecutor of Ankara, and decided acquittal of Alican Uludağ.

(02/014) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against lawyer Celal Çelik is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 27 on January 31, 2023. The court acquitted Celal Çelik.
