(02/001) Armed Attack on Deputy Mayor in Aydın…

Oğuzhan Turan, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy mayor of Kuşadası district in Aydın is subjected to an armed attack on January 31, 2022. It is learned that Oğuzhan Turan was not wounded and 1 person (H. Ö.) is detained in relation to the attack.

(02/002) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 31, 2022 that, 4 street musicians playing Kurdish music in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul were detained by the police on January 29, 2022. It is stated in the news reports that 4 musicians whose instruments were seized were also subjected to torture and ill-treatment under custody.

One of the detained musicians M. T. stated the following to the press: “The police stopped us in the evening. At that moment, a citizen asked us to play so that they could record a video. And we asked permission of the police, but they did not allow us. At that time, one of our friends had their hands in pocket, the police insulted us. They said ‘You will stand in attention before me’ (…) They used heavy swears, very humiliating expressions. They seized our instruments. And they wanted to get the money we collected as we played in the streets. We resisted, and they imposed a penalty fine of 205 Turkish Liras on the grounds of ‘disturbance in public’. And we payed 205 Turkish Liras to get our instruments back.”

Another detained musician Y. T. stated the following: “The police punched me, I hit the wall. I was taken to a police station maybe 50 times so far. It was the first time they got my instrument.”

Another detained musician S. Ö. stated the following: “They said you are disturbing the people and fined me and 3 other friends (…) The police called us ‘beggars’ at the station (…) They choked a friend for saying ‘Do not yell at us’”.

Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate made the following declaration: “In relation to the claims on social media, stating that those who play music on Istiklal street in Beyoğlu district were being prevented; it is understood that the crowd listening to the music is prohibiting the tram line and the way of ambulances and fire trucks, and that citizens and shopkeepers around make constant complaints about this (…) In the past, there were several spots where music could be played on Istiklal Street but as these spots were cancelled, the police has intervened.”

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 31, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on January 31, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(02/005) Detained People in Diyarbakır…

17 people including members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Youth Assembly who were detained in house raids in 4 cities through a Diyarbakır based investigation on January 28, 2022 are released by the court on judicial control conditions on January 31, 2022.

(02/006) Detained City Council Member and Other People in Mardin…

9 people including Bedirhan Şeran, city council member form HDP, who were detained in Mardin on January 26, 2022 are released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 1, 2022.

(02/007) Conscientious Objector on Trial in Artvin…

The final trial of the case against conscientious objector Şendoğan Yazıcı is held at Artvin Borçka Penal Court of First Instance on January 31, 2022. The court sentenced Şendoğan Yazıcı to 1 month and 20 days on the charge of “violating the Military Penal Code”.

(02/008) Investigation Against Journalist…

It is learned that Aydın Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against journalist Sevda Karaca from the Evrensel newspaper, on the charge of ‘turning a counterterrorism official into a target’, ‘publicly degrading and insulting a public official’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ upon official complaint filed by lieutenant general Musa Çitil of Gendarmerie General Command.

It is stated in the news reports that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office has ruled non-prosecution on the same article before.

(02/009) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 182 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 93,261 as of January 31, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 87,416 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 11,619,882 as of January 31, 2022.
