(04/001) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 31, 2022 that, 3 HPG militants died in an air operation of the Turkish Armed Forces to Qandil area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on January 23, 2022.

(04/002) Racist Attack in Muğla…

It is learned that a racist group attacked Kurdish students in Turgutreis Dormitory in Menteşe district of Muğla. It is learned that 5 of the students who were attacked were detained and released after statement procedures

(04/003) Alleged Racist Attack in Konya…

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu announced on his social media post on March 31, 2022 that a Syrian family was attacked by a racist group in Konya, and a child’s arm was broken as a result of the attack.

(04/004) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 31, 2022 that there were too many insects in the wards of Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison, and that the meals given to the prisoners were of low quality and insufficient.

(04/005) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded

Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office replied on 29 March 2022 to the application made by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to meet with their clients on 28 March 2022, and stated that there will be no meeting due to the penalty of prevention of visits for 3 months given to Abdullah Öcalan on February 3, 2022 and was finalised on February 21, 2022.

(04/006) Police Intervention to Protest in Istanbul…

One person (Fince Akman), who came to the Istanbul Courthouse in Çağlayan on 31 March 2022 to attend the justice watch held by the prisoners’ relatives regarding the rights violations in prisons and ill prisoners, was detained by the police on the grounds of the ban decision Kağıthane Sub-Governorate’s Office.

(04/007) Police Intervention to Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of dismissed EnerjiSa workers outside of Başkent Elektrik in Ankara on March 31, 2022; and detained 6 people including Electricity, Gas, Water, Dam Workers Union (Enerji-Sen) chair Süleyman Keskin.

(04/008) Detained People in Şırnak…

4 people (Habeş Ergin, Hanım Ergin, Kumru Timurtaş and Fikret Şen), who were detained by the gendarmerie in the house raids on March 26 and 29, 2022 in Demirboğaz, Yağızoyma villages of Güçlükonak district of Şırnak, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on March 30, 2022.

(04/009) Detained Person in Ardahan…

One person (Seyfeddin Kaplan), who was detained in Ardahan on 29 March 2022, is released on March 31, 2022 after statement procedures.

(04/010) HDP Assembly Member Detained in Van…

HDP Party Assembly member Sinan Kaya, who was detained in Van on 29 March 2022, is released by the court on judicial control conditions on March 31, 2022.

(04/011) Detained People on the Ground of Newroz Celebrations…

10 people including 2 children who were detained in house raids in Antalya on March 30, 2022 for participating in the Newroz celebration on March 20, 2022; are released by the court on judicial control conditions on March 31, 2022.

6 people (Gurbet Aslan, İbrahim Aslan, Esat Aras, Yiğit Evrensel, Recep Turan and Şükran Güler) were detained by the gendarmerie on the grounds of Newroz celebrations in the house raids carried out on 31 March 2022, in the Evîna (Sürgücü) and Cilîn (Çınarönü) neighbourhoods of the Savur district of Mardin. The detainees were released on April 1, 2022, after their statements.

A person (Barış T.), who was detained and arrested during the police intervention to the Newroz celebration in Diyarbakır on March 21, 2022, was released on April 1, 2022 upon the objection of his lawyer.

(04/012) Political Party Executives Detained in Muğla…

2 people [Turkish Workers Party (TİP) Muğla Provincial chair Volkan Çetin and Labour Party (EMEP) Muğla Provincial chair Nuri Alikoç] who wanted to participate in the protest against the removal of olive trees by an energy company in the İkizköy region of Milas district of Muğla were detained by the gendarmerie.  The detainees are released after statement procedures.

(04/013) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against journalist Beritan Canözer, for social media posts of an account that does not belong to her, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4 on March 31, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 21, 2022.

(04/014) Journalists on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against journalist Abdurrahman Gök who has captured the moment Kemal Kürküt was killed by police officers at the Newroz celebration in Diyarbakır in 2017, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on January 20, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Abdurrahman Gök on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, for his social media posts and journalism.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 30, 2022.

(04/015) Writer on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against writer Yavuz Ekinci, for his social media posts in 2013 and 2014, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 34 on March 31, 2022. The court sentenced Yavuz Ekinci to 1 year 6 months and 22 days on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(04/016) Case Filed Against the Directors of the Chamber of Architects…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 31, 2022 that, the indictment of Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against the executive board members of the Chamber of Architects Ankara branch, for giving the International Television Journalism to Jin TV channel, is accepted by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 25.

Chamber of Architects Ankara Branch Head Tezcan Karakuş Candan and board members Ece Yoltay, Mustafa Özgür Bayramoğlu, Muteber Osmanpaşaoğlu, Nihal Evirgen Kabal, Tuğba Arslan Konak and Ünal Kara on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ will be held on June 23, 2022.

(04/017) Journalists and Other Persons on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against 40 people including journalist Sena Dolar and Enes Sezgin, who were detained by the police intervening the press declaration of dismissed Sinbo workers in Avcılar district of Istanbul on April 27, 2021, which was to be held at Istanbul Büyükçekmece Penal Court of First Instance on March 31, 2022 is adjourned due to leave of the judge.

(04/018) People on Trial for Participating a Protest in İzmir

The trial of the case against 24 people, for participating in “Las Tesis” dance performance against male violence against women, is held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 7 on March 31, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to September 29, 2022.

Following the protest on December 15, 2019, 9 women were detained; 15 women were called to make official statements through the investigation on December 17, 2019.

(04/019) Lawyers on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against lawyers Akçay Taşçı, Avni Güçlü Zengin, Eren Keskin, Gökmen Yeşil, Gülhan Kaya, Hüseyin Boğatekin, Kemal Aytaç, Sinan Zincir, and Yaprak Türkmen for the press declaration in front of Istanbul Courthouse on August 20, 2019 to protest trustee appointments to Diyarbakır, Mardin and Van metropolitan municipalities is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 58 on March 31, 2022. The court decided to send the indictment to Yaprak Türkmen who is in prison and adjourned the trial to October 25, 2022.

(04/020) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against police officer K. B., for the killing of Recep Hantaş, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 7 on March 31, 2022. Recep Hantaş was killed by police fire while he was collecting waste paper in Diyarbakır on April 14, 2019.

The indictment demands 18 to 25 years of sentence on the charge of ‘murder with probable intent’ for the police officer.

The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for the police officer on the charge of ‘killing with probable intention’. The court adjourned the trial to May 16, 2022.

(04/021) Homophobic Murder Case in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Yahya Yıldız, who killed his son Ahmet Yıldız in 2008 because he was homosexual, is held at Istanbul Kartal Heavy Penal Court No 5 on March 31, 2022. The court rejected the intervention demands of Hevi LGBTI+ Association, TİP LGBTI+ Commission and Diyarbakır Bar Association and adjourned the hearing to October 6, 2022.

(04/022) Discriminatory Statements of the Minister of Interior…

Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu used discriminatory expressions against LGBTI+s in his speech on March 31, 2022 at the General Directorate of Civil Society Relations In-Service Training Seminar. Soylu said: “To put forward the concept of genderlessness, LGBTism, FETOism, Kuytulism, PKKism, DHKPCism, most of them develop under the name of civil society. Each of them have roots outside. The roots of those who try to disrupt the unity of this country and erode its values are outside. We do not have such harmful habits. All of them are rooted outside. They help so-called associations in Turkey from Europe, America and many parts of the world. They’re trying to encourage of man to man and woman to woman, I do not want to see it. Supporting LGBT; I do not want to see it either”. (04/023) Constitutional Court Decision on Trustee Appointment…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 31, 2022 that, the Constitutional Court decided on the individual applications of the former Co-Mayor of Diyarbakır Sur Municipality Azize Değer Kutlu, who was dismissed and replaced by a trustee, and Abdurrahman Zorlu, the former Co-Mayor of Hani Municipality. The court found the applications which was made on the grounds of violation of the right to fair trial, the presumption of innocence, the right to respect for private life and the right to vote and be elected, inadmissible.

(04/024) Ban of Events in Kağıthane District…

Kağıthane Sub-Governorate’s Office announced on March 30, 2022 that “as the sit-in protests and so on that are organized by the Solidarity with Prisoners Initiative (TDI), TUAYDER, Relatives of Ill Prisoners etc. could jeopardize the public security, all protests, demonstrations, gatherings, meetings, press releases that are planned to be held in front of Istanbul Çağlayan Courthouse, and in its surroundings, in all open areas are banned for 15 days as pf March 31, 2022. as the waiting/sitting/press statement that can be made in the organization of organizations named sit-in, etc. announced that such actions and events” were banned for 15 days as of March 31, 2022.

(04/025) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 56 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 14,336 as of March 31, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,003 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 14,860,560 as of March 31, 2022.
