1 – 3 January 2022 Daily Human Rights Report

(01/001) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 31, 2021 that, 3 prisoners in Şırnak T Type Closed Prison were transferred to other prisons under coercion. It is reported that Sümeyye Gök is transferred to Kayseri Bünyan Women’s Closed Prison, Mehmet Miraç Dinç is transferred to Elazığ F Type Prison and Abdullah Kaçmaz is transferred to Elazığ T Type Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 31, 2021 that, 2 prisoners in Van High Security Prison were transferred to other prisons under coercion. It is reported that Barış Kahraman was transferred to Ankara Sincan F Type Prison No 2 and Metin Gelni is transferred to Aksaray T Type Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 31, 2021 that, 2 prisoners (Ferhat Ertunç and Sedat Karabalık) in Van F Type Closed Prison were transferred to other prisons under coercion.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 31, 2021 that, in Bayburt M Type Prison the amount of packages that could be sent to prisoners is limited and the packages are delivered only once in every two months.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 1, 2022 that, Reşit İlhan, a prisoner in Gümüşhane E Type Closed Prison was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the correction officers.

(01/002) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on December 31, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

(01/003) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) to protest the armed assault to Bahçelievler district office of HDP, at Şirinevler Square in Istanbul on January 2, 2022 and detained at least 10 people by using physical violence.

(01/004) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against 6 journalists (Ömer Çelik, news director and Metin Yoksu, reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree; Tunca Öğreten, former editor of Diken news portal; Mahir Kanaat, Birgün newspaper employee; Eray Sargın, editor in chief of Yolculuk newspaper; Derya Okatan, Etkin News Agency news director) is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 29 on December 31, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for 6 journalists on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and ‘blocking and breaking the information system, changing or destroying the data’, for reporting on the e-mails of Berat Albayrak, Minister of Energy and Natural Sources which were hacked by Redhack and then published on the internet.

The court acquitted 6 journalists on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, and sentenced 5 journalists (Ömer Çelik, Metin Yoksu, Tunca Öğreten, Mahir Kanaat and Eray Sargın) to 1 year and 8 months each on the charge of ‘unlawfully taking possession of data’ and postponed the sentences.

3 of 6 journalists who were detained on December 25, 2016, were arrested by the court on January 17, 2017. Ömer Çelik was released on October 24, 2017; Tunca Öğreten and Mahir Kanaat were released on December 6, 2017.

(01/005) Actor on Trial…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 2, 2022 that, Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office has prepared an indictment against actor İlyas Salman, on the charge of ‘publicly degrading Turkish Nation, State of the Turkish Republic, Turkish Grand National Assembly, the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the judicial bodies of the State’, and that the Ministry of Justice has permitted for proceedings according to Article 301 of Turkish Penal Code. The first trial will be held on March 2022.

(01/006) Hande Buse Şeker Case…

Police officer Volkan Hicret has been sentenced to life imprisonment and 20 years by Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 4, on the grounds of sexually assaulting and killing trans woman Hande Buse Şeker in Izmir on January 9, 2019. As the local court’s verdict was reversed by Izmir Regional Court, the retrial of the case is held on December 31, 2021.

The court adjourned the trial to April 4, 2022.

(01/007) Removal of a Banner in Eskişehir…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 31, 2021 that, the banner of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) about interest rates and taxes, hung on Eskişehir office, was removed by the police at night.

(01/008) Discriminatory Attack on Church in Istanbul…

It is learned that Anatolian Protestant Church in Kadıköy district of Istanbul was attacked by a spray paint writing on December 31, 2021. It is reported that 1 person who was detained in relation to the attack is released on January 2, 2022.

(01/009) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 163 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 40,786 as of December 31, 2021.

The Ministry of Health declared that 145 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 36,731 as of January 1, 2022.

The Ministry of Health declared that 129 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 33,520 as of January 2, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 82,635 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 9,552,801 as of January 2, 2021.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 30, 2021 that, Mehmet Emin Özkan, an 83-year-old ill prisoner in Diyarbakır D Type Prison has tested positive for Covid-19.
