1 – 3 February 2025 Daily Human Rights Report

(02/001) Person Died in Prison

On February 1, 2025, it is learned from the news coverage of February 1, 2025 that doctor İlker Gönen, one of the defendants of “newborn baby gang” investigation, died in Antalya Döşemealtı High Security Prison. It is claimed in the news reports that the cause of death was suicide.

His lawyer Aydın Mantar made the following statement on the death of his client: “When he returned from the hearing in Marmara Closed Prison, where he was temporarily held while the 2nd hearing was going on, they left a rope in his cell (…) I told him that I wanted to file a report about this immediately and that I wanted to do whatever was necessary to punish those responsible. However, he told me that there were no cameras in the corridors where he was being held like in other prisons and that he was afraid because of this: ‘One morning when they say that your brother hanged himself, you cannot do anything, you cannot prove anything.’ (…) I do not know at this stage whether this suspicion has come true or not. Even if it has, I wanted to express that he was driven to this action by this psychological torture and to make a note in history.”

On February 1, 2025, it is learned from the news coverage of February 1, 2025 that, Baran Erman, a prisoner who was transferred from Diyarbakır High Security Prison No 1 to Samsun Çarşamba S Type Prison against his will, was subjected to physical violence for rejecting strip search.

(02/003) Meeting Requests with Abdullah Öcalan not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on January 3, 2025, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(02/004) University Student Attacked in Istanbul…

On January 31, 2025 it is learned from the news coverage of January 31, 2025 that, a student of Marmara University, whose name is unknown, was forcibly taken to Ülkü Ocakları building by alleged Ülkü Ocakları members and was threatened by saying “We have killed many people before, we will not hesitate to kill again” and was subjected to physical violence.

(02/005) Police Intervention to Newspaper Distributors…

On January 31, 2025, 2 members of Socialist Party of the Oppressed (Kerem Bükre and Hüseyin Yeşilova) who were distributing Atılım newspaper in Kadıköy district of Istanbul are detained by the police. Lawyer Sezin Uçar, who went to Kadıköy İskele Police Station in connection with 2 detained people, is also detained on the grounds of being in the same place with her clients. 3 people were released by the Criminal Court of Peace on February 1, 2025 on judicial control conditions.

(02/006) People Subjected to Police Intervention in Istanbul…

The police used tear gas and batons to intervene the members of Republican People’s Party (CHP) who gathered in front of the courthouse to support Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu who testified at Istanbul Çağlayan Courthouse on January 31, 2025 in connection with the investigations against him. It is reported that no one was detained during the intervention.

(02/007) Interventions Against Trustee Protests in Siirt…

6 people [Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Siirt Central District Co-Chair Şernas Çelepkolu, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Siirt Provincial Organisation Executive Muhammed Polat, municipality employee Ferhat Toprak, Veysel Örenç, Yusuf Mercan and Mehmet Nezir Kaplan] who were detained during the police intervention against the protest in front of Siirt Municipality Building to protest the appointment of a trustee in place of Siirt Co-Mayor Sofya Alağaş are released after statement procedures at the Public Prosecutor’s Office on January 31, 2025.

(02/008) Investigations Against the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality…

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu gave his official statement to the prosecutor’s office on January 31, 2025 through 2 separate investigations opened against him due to his statements on Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor and an expert in the cases he is on trial.

(02/009) Mayor and Other People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 7 people including Murat Hazinedar, former CHP elected mayor of Beşiktaş district of Istanbul, continued on February 3, 2025 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 31. The indictment demands sentence for 7 people on the charge of ‘abuse of office’. After the defenses, the court adjourned the hearing to a later date.

(02/011) Lawyer on Trial in Istanbul…

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against lawyer Dilek Ekmekçi due to her social media posts was held at Istanbul 24th Assize Court on January 31, 2025. The court sentenced Dilek Ekmekçi to 2 years and 1 month on the charge of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an armed terrorist organization’ and ruled for the release of Dilek Ekmekçi on judicial control conditions.

Arrested on September 2, 2024 due to ‘insulting a public officer’ and ‘slander’, lawyer Dilek Ekmekçi was released at the first hearing of the case held on October 22, 2024, but was arrested again upon the objection to the release decision.

(02/012) Members of Parliament Investigated…

On February 1, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of February 1, 2025 that Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against CHP Izmir MP Tuncay Özkan on the grounds of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’, for his statements on a TV channel in which he said “There may be political assassinations through the food served in prisons or health services provided”.

(02/013) Lawyer Investigated…

On February 3, 2025, it is learned from the news coverage of February 3, 2025 that Antalya Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Aydın Mantar, lawyer of İlker Gönen, a prisoner who died in Antalya Döşemealtı High Security Prison, on the grounds of saying “they left a rope in his cell” about his client’s death in his social media posts, on the grounds of ‘publicly spreading misleading information’.

(02/014) Attack to Mayor’s House in Şırnak…

On February 3, 2025, it is learned that the house of Faysal Babat, DEM Party elected mayor of Şenoba town in Uludere district of Şırnak, was attacked by unidentified person or persons with lighting flares. No casualties were reported.

(02/015) Attack to a Party Building in Istanbul…

On February 2, 2025, it is learned that unidentified person or persons stoned CHP district office in Şile district of Istanbul. It is reported that material damage occurred due to the attack.

(02/016) Soldiers Discharged from the Army…

It is learned that 8 soldiers, including 5 graduates and 3 supervisors, were dismissed from Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) as a result of the investigation opened by the Supreme Disciplinary Board of Turkish Land Forces on the issue of some graduates drawing their swords and chanting “We are soldiers of Mustafa Kemal” after the Land War College Colors Handover and Graduation Ceremony.

(02/017) Television Channels Penalized by RTÜK…

On January 31, 2025, according to the news appeared in the press, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) issued an order against Halk TV for broadcasting the phone calls of the expert mentioned in the press statement of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu; against TELE 1, NOW TV and Sözcü TV channels for their broadcasts on the hotel fire in Bolu; Sözcü TV channel for the statements in the main news, “Öncesi Sonrası Gece” and “Kitabının Ortası” programs; Tele1 channel for the remarks about the recently deceased artist Ferdi Tayfur; Flash TV channel for the statements in the “Main News with Can Ataklı” program; NOW TV channel for the statements in the “NOW News Weekend with Ozan Gündoğdu” program were given separate administrative fines.

It is also reported that RTÜK imposed an administrative fine on NETFLIX for the program titled “Teen Titans Go” and decided to remove the program from the catalog.

(02/018) Detained People in Istanbul…

On January 31, 2025, 11 people are detained in operations covering 9 cities through an Istanbul based investigation on the allegations of ‘using Bylock’.

(02/019) People Arrested in Istanbul…

7 of 12 people (Erdal Idrak B., Ekrem Ç., İbrahim E., Orhan A., Sıddık A. and Selami K.) who were detained through an Istanbul based investigation are arrested by the court on January 31, 2025. 5 people (Ahmet A., Ayhan K., Ahmet Ramazan B., Osman Uğur B., Fatma A. and Yaman Y.) were released on judicial control conditions.

(02/020) Detained People Through a Konya Based Investigation…

On February 3, 2025, 21 people were detained in operations conducted in 12 provinces (Konya, İstanbul, Kırklareli, İzmir, Manisa, Afyon, Antalya, Adana, Maraş, Malatya, Ankara and Çankırı) within the scope of a Konya based investigation on the allegations of forming an intimate structure within Turkish Armed Forces.
