(08/073) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from news coverage of August 8, 2018 that 8 HPG militants died in a bombardment of Turkish Armed Forces in rural areas of Hakkari on July 21, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of August 8, 2018 that 2 militants died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of Lice and Hani districts of Diyarbakır on August 3, 2018.

It is stated in the news coverage of August 8, 2018 that, funerals of 6 TKP/TİKKO militants, who died in a clash in Ovacık district of Tunceli on August 6, 2018, could not be identified by their families in Malatya Forensic Medicine Institution, because of being completely burned.

It is learned from news coverage of August 8, 2018 that 2 soldiers were wounded in a clash in rural areas of Karayazı district of Erzurum.

(08/074) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on August 8, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on August 8, 2018, 2 people (Mahmut Konuk and Gülnaz Bozkurt) and at 18.00 2 people (Acun Karadağ and Mahir Kılıç) were detained.

Thus in total 4 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on August 8, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(08/075) Nuriye Gülmen and Mehmet Dersulu Detained in Bodrum…

Academician Nuriye Gülmen, who was one of the initiator of “I Want My Job Back” protests in Yüksel Street, Ankara, and Mehmet Dersulu, one of the protesters, are detained in Bodrum district of Muğla on August 8, 2018. It is reported that Mehmet Dersulu was subjected to physical violence and was handcuffed behind his back by the police. It is stated in the news reports that, Nuriye Gülmen and Mehmet Dersulu was not allowed to see their lawyers at Bodrum Police Headquarters where they were taken.

(08/076) Court Decision on People Detained in Protest at Bakırköy Square, Istanbul…

It is learned from news coverage of August 8, 2018 that 2 public labourers (Selvi Polat and Nursel Tanrıverdi) who were detained in police intervention against the sit-in protest to regain their jobs from which they had been dismissed by state of emergency decrees, at Bakırköy Square in Istanbul on August 6, 2018, are referred to the court. The court decided to ban 2 people from getting closer to Bakırköy Square less than 200 meters until being heard in a public trial, according to Article 109, Clause 3, Sub-paragraph 1 of Code of Criminal Procedure; and released 2 people.

(08/077) Journalist Detained in Mardin…

Uğur Akgül, reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is detained in Kızıltepe district of Mardin on August 8, 2018, on the grounds that he was sentenced through a case. Uğur Akgül is brought to the court the same day, is arrested and sent to prison.

Uğur Akgül and Meltem Oktay have been detained on April 11, 2016 in Nusaybin district of Mardin where they have been for reporting news. They were brought to the court on April 15, 2016; Uğur Akgül has been released on juridical control conditions and Meltem Oktay has been arrested. Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2, has sentenced Meltem Oktay and Uğur Akgül to 2 years and 6 months each for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation on social media’. Meltem Oktay has been released after the second trial of the case however, on April 20, 2017 she was sent to prison once again after the sentence was approved.

(08/078) People Detained in Hakkari…

2 people (Husret Altun and Gökhan Kaplan) who were detained in Yüksekova district of Hakkari on July 31, 2018, related to the incident where Nurcan Karakaya and her 11-months-old baby Mustafa Bedirhan Karakaya died; are arrested by the court on August 8, 2018. It is learned that 2 people were arrested because of using the same road on permission of military authorities, where Nurcan Karakaya and her baby died.

25 people have been detained in total in relation to the incident and 23 of them were released after statement procedures at the police.

It was stated in the news reports that people who have been detained were subjected to verbal and physical violence of the gendarmerie.

(08/079) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On August 8, 2018, 4 people in Edirne in alleged attempt to illegally flee to Greece and 6 people in house raids in Maraş are detained.

(08/080) Vetoed Deputy Advisors…

It is learned from news coverage of August 8, 2018 that, at least 14 people who applied to be advisors of HDP MP’s, were vetoed by Grand National Assembly of Turkey Department of Human Resources, on the grounds of “archive research”. It is stated in the news report that there were no investigation or prosecution on these 14 people.

(08/081) Special Security Zone in Şırnak…

Şırnak Governorate made a declaration on August 8, 2018 and announced special security zone in 54 areas with given coordinates in rural areas of Beytüşşebap district as of August 8, 2018 to August 22, 2018.
