(08/052) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from news coverage of August 6, 2018 that 6 militants died in a clash between security forces and TKP/ML TİKKO militants in rural areas of Ovacık district of Tunceli.

It is learned that Ahmet Nebi, a village guard who was unaccounted for since August 5, 2018, is found dead near Sudüğün village of Sancak town of Bingöl on August 6, 2018.

(08/053) Prisoner Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment and Being Prevented from Right to Health…

It is learned from news coverage of August 6, 2018 that, lawyer Engin Gökoğlu, who is kept in Tekirdağ T Type Prison No 2, was prevented from physiotherapy required for recovery and functionality of his broken arm. It is also stated in the news reports that, Engin Gökoğlu was subjected to physical violence of wardens during a tension occurred at roll-calls, and was tug at his broken arm.

Engin Gökoğlu has been subjected to physical violence of wardens in a solitary cell where he was kept on October 30, 2017 and his right arm was broken due to this.

It is also learned from news coverage that 20 days of solitary confinement given to Engin Gökoğlu for ‘revolting’, was cancelled upon objection, by Tekirdağ Court of Execution No 2 on the grounds that ‘elements of revolting crime do not exist’. It is claimed that sub-manager of the prison states that the court’s verdict is advisory and it is not compulsory to abide by the decision.

It is learned from news coverage of August 6, 2018 that Mehmet Özdemir, a prisoner from Kırıkkale F Type Prison rejected to be examined in handcuffs at the hospital and thus was taken back to the prison without being medically treated.

(08/055) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on August 6, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on August 6, 2018, 2 people (Gülnaz Bozkurt and Acun Karadağ) and at 18.00 4 people (Acun Karadağ, Gülnaz Bozkurt, Mahir Kılıç and Cafer Çağlar) were detained.

Thus in total 6 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on August 6, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(08/056) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened into the sit-in protest of public labourers who made a press declaration to regain their jobs from which they had been dismissed by state of emergency decrees, at Bakırköy Square in Istanbul; and detained 2 people (Nursel Tanrıverdi, Selvi Polat) by physical violence.

(08/057) People Detained in Hakkari…

5 people are detained in house raids in Kadıköy village of Hakkari’s Yüksekova district on August 6, 2018. It is learned that detention of these people is related to the incident where Nurcan Karakaya and her 11-months-old baby Mustafa Bedirhan Karakaya died on July 31, 2018. It is claimed that 5 people detained were subjected to physical and verbal violence of the gendarmerie. It is stated that persons who have taken the wounded baby to the hospital on the day of incident, were also among the detainees.

20 people has been detained in relation to the incident previously and 18 of them were released.

(08/058) Journalists on Trial in Van…

Şefik Tunç’s house in Gevaş district of Van, has been raided several times on October 15, 17 and November 2, 2014; and Şefik Tunç had a heart attack and died on November 4, 2014. A case has been opened on Gevaş Penal Court of First Instance based on Article 301 of Turkish Penal Code, against Zekeriya Gözüpek, chair of executive board; Dicle Müftüoğlu, managing editor; Ferhat Çelik, chief clerk; Hülya Emeç, reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree; and Hafize Tunç, wife of Şefik Tunç, based on the news reports on Şefik Tunç’s death. The final trial of the case is held on August 6, 2018. The court sentenced reporter Hülya Emeç and her news source Hafize Tunç to 6 months. The court postponed the sentences and acquitted other defendants.

(08/059) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On August 6, 2018, in operations covering 20 cities through a Kilis based investigation 31 military personnel including 14 members on active duty; and 1 person in Urfa are detained.

On August 6, 2018, a detention warrant is issued for 9 major commanders 2 of which are on active duty, through an Ankara based investigation.

(08/060) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against former police officer Yusuf Caner who has been dismissed by a state of emergency decree, on Antep Heavy Penal Court No 8 is held on August 6, 2018. The court sentenced Yusuf Caner to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(08/061) Special Security Zone in Hakkari…

Hakkari Governorate made a declaration on August 6, 2018 and announced special security zones in 30 areas with given coordinates in central, Çukurca, Şemdinli and Yüksekova districts of Hakkari as of August 7, 2018 until August 21, 2018.
