(02/047) Avalanches in Van…

On February 4, 2020, 5 people died due to an avalanche that hit Van-Bahçesaray roadway. On February 5, 2020, a second avalanche hit the rescue squad, killing 33 people and injuring 75 people. Thus the number of people died due to two avalanches rise to 38.

(02/048) Plane Crash in Istanbul…

On February 5, 2020, a plane from Izmir to Istanbul skidded off a runway and crashed at Sabiha Gökçen Airport. It is reported that 3 people died and 179 people got injured. Video recording of injured passengers being carried by apron buses to the airport is covered by press.

(02/049) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned that 1 soldier (Özgür Çelik) died due to explosion of a grenade in a military base in Çukurca district of Hakkari on February 5, 2020.

(02/050) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 5, 2020 that, Ömer Köse, former chief of Anti-Terror Department of Istanbul Security Directorate, who is now in Tekirdağ T Type Prison No 2, is being kept alone in a ward for 3 people, is not given hot water, his rights for social, cultural and sports activities are prevented and his petitions are not put in process.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 5, 2020 that in Kayseri T Type Prison No 2, letters sent to prisoners are not delivered to them, prisoners are not given radios, and the number of books per prisoner is limited.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 5, 2020 that 2 prisoners (Kadir Çiçek and Furkan Uğur) were subjected to physical violence of the wardens during a roll-call and were put in single cells.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 5, 2020 that prisoners in Kayseri T Type Prison No 2 were forced to be in handcuffs during medical examinations and prisoners who reject this cannot have dental treatment for 2 years.

(02/052) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened Dev-Güç (Revolutionary Forces of Youth) members holding a press declaration in front of Red Crescent office in Beşiktaş district of Istanbul on February 5, 2020 to protest transfer of donations to Ensar Foundation; and detained 2 people (Umut Doğan and Bekir Açat) by using physical violence.

(02/053) Detained Journalist in Istanbul…

Ferhat Çelik, Mezopotamya News Agency editor in chief, who was detained at Silivri Prison No 5 where he went for a prisoner visit on February 5, 2020, is released on the same day after giving official statement about a news report, at Silivri Courthouse.

Ferhat Çelik is detained in his house once again on the same day through the same investigation. It is learned that Ferhat Çelik was detained again because his statement was not recorded in. Ferhat Çelik is released afterwards.

(02/054) HDP MP on Trial…

The trial of the case against People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven, for her declarations about Turkish Armed Forces operation to Afrin and her activities within DTK, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on February 5, 2020. The court rejected to lift the ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to April 8, 2020.

(02/055) “I Want My Job Back” Protestor on Trial in Düzce…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 5, 2020 that, the final trial of the case against architect Alev Şahin, for continuing her protests “I Want My Job Back”, to regain her job from which she was dismissed by a state of emergency decree, in spite of governorate’s ban, is held at Düzce Penal Court of First Instance No 2. It is reported that the court sentenced Alev Şahin to 37 days for violating governorate’s ban.

(02/056) HDP Members on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against Yusuf Ziya Yavuz, city council member from HDP in Bağlar district of Diyarbakır and Leyla Akgül, advisor of HDP MP Dersim Dağ, for participating in a protest against Turkish Armed Forces operation to north and south Syria, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on February 5, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for 2 people on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘resisting to police’.

After defence hearings the court released Yusuf Ziya Yavuz and Leyla Akgül on judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial.

(02/057) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against journalist Durket Süren for her social media posts and on the grounds of delivering banned newspapers, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on February 5, 2020. The indictment demands sentence for Durket Süren on the charges of ‘aiding an illegal organisation’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to May 18, 2020.

(02/058) Berkin Elvan Case…

The case against police officer Fatih Dalga for Berkin Elvan’s death, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 17 is held on February 5, 2020. Berkin Elvan was wounded due to a gas canister fired by the police on June 16, 2013, during Gezi Park protests in Okmeydanı neighbourhood of Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district; and died in hospital on March 11, 2014.

The indictment demands sentence for police officer Fatih Dalga on the charge of ‘killing with probable intention’.

It is learned that the report of gendarmerie sent to court on January 24, 2020, Berkin Elvan is presented as “faulty at secondary rate”.

The court adjourned the trial to March 18, 2020.

(02/059) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against Ahmet Kaya, former member of Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors is held at Penal Department No 9 of Supreme Court on February 5, 2020. The court sentenced the defendant to 12 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The final trial of the case against Burka Okuç is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 15 on February 5, 2020. The court sentenced the defendant to 8 years 1 month and 15 days for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(02/060) City Council Members Prevented from Entering Municipality Offices…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 3, 2020 that city council members in Bismil district of Diyarbakır, who came to municipality buildings to attend monthly council meetings, were not allowed in by the police. Bismil co-mayor Orhan Ayaz was suspended by Ministry of Interior on October 22, 2019 and a trustee was appointed to Bismil.
