(05/024) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

Siirt Governorate declared that 1 soldier died due to land mine in rural areas of Pervari district of Siirt on May 4, 2020.

(05/025) İbrahim Gökçek Ended His Death Fast…

Grup Yorum band member İbrahim Gökçek, who was on death fast for 323 days to demand an end to oppression and bans on Grup Yorum, ended his fast on May 5, 2020, following applications to Izmir and Istanbul governorates for a concert.

İbrahim Gökçek went on a hunger strike in Silivri Prison on June 18, 2019; and turned his strike to a death fast on January 3, 2020. He was released from prison according to Istanbul Forensic Institution report which declares he cannot stay in prison, on February 24, 2020 by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 with a ban on leaving the country and leaving his house. He continued his strike with Helin Bölek in a house in Küçükarmutlu neighbourhood of Sarıyer district of Istanbul. The police had raided the house on March 11, 2020; and Helin Bölek and İbrahim Gökçek were taken to Ümraniye Research and Training Hospital on the grounds of a court order. They were discharged from hospital on March 16, 2020, after the court order was lifted upon appeal.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 4, 2020 that, 15 prisoners in Kırıkkale F Type Prison went on a 3-day hunger strike to support Grup Yorum member İbrahim Gökçek who is on 323rd day of death fast.

(05/027) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1273 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 4, 2020 at 13.30 and at 18.00, and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(04/028) Police Intervention to a Protest in Düzce…

On May 4, 2020, the police intervened the press declaration of Alev Şahin in order to regain her job from which she was dismissed by a state of emergency decree, in front of Düzce Governorate and detained her. Alev Şahin was released on the same day, after being fined for violating Law of Misdemeanour and Public Health Law.

(05/029) Detained People in Van…

5 of 15 people who were detained in house raids in İpekyolu district of Van on May 1, 2020; on the grounds of participating in a demonstration to protest sending of funeral of a HPG militant to his family by cargo, are arrested by the court on May 4, 2020. 10 people are released. Arrested people are: Devrim Aşan, Oktay Gil, Feyaz Başak, Güven Özdöner and Murat Şeker.

(05/030) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Evrensel newspaper columnist Yusuf Karataş, for his activities within Democratic Society Congress (DTK), which was to be held on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on May 4, 2020, is adjourned based on decision of Council and Judges and Prosecutors to September 21, 2020.

The indictment demands jail sentence from 7 years and 6 months to 15 years on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(05/031) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 4, 2020 that, the appeal to arrest of Barış Pehlivan (managing editor of Oda TV), Barış Terkoğlu (chief news editor of Oda TV) and reporter Hülya Kılınç, Ferhat Çelik (managing editor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper), Aydın Keser (executive editor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper), and Murat Ağırel (Yeniçağ newspaper writer), who have been arrested for the news reports on National Intelligence officer who died in Libya and was buried in Manisa; is rejected by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace. It is learned that the appeal was judged without informing lawyers of the journalists on trial, and other lawyers from Istanbul Bar Association were called to participate in trial.

(05/032) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 64 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,614 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on May 4, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 3,461 and total number of confirmed cases is 127,659 as of May 4, 2020.

It is learned from data shared by Izmir Chamber of Medicine on May 4, 2020 that 466 health workers including 147 doctors, 2 dentists, 146 nurses and delivery nurses, 85 health officers, 16 medical secretaries, 24 technicians, 30 public officers, 6 pharmacists, 2 psychologists, 5 security staff and 1 driver, and 2 engineers in Izmir tested positive for Covid-19.

On May 4, 2020, ban on exit and entrance of vehicles for 31 provinces including 30 metropolitan cities is lifted for 7 cities (Antalya, Aydın, Erzurum, Hatay, Malatya and Muğla). The ban on exit and entrance of vehicles will be effective for 24 cities for 15 days. The ban on leaving houses for citizens older than 65 and younger than 20 years old will be gradually and partly lifted; those citizens will be allowed to leave their houses for 4 hours once a week. Juridical procedures and trials which were suspended at courthouses will restart on June 15, 2020.
