Since 12 September 2026, operations known as “My Family is Safe” (“Ailem Güvende”) have targeted LGBTI+ associations, human rights defenders and LGBTI+ individuals in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Aydın and Mersin. According to information confirmed by the Solidarity Groups of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV), at least 117 people had been detained and at least 83 arrested as of 21 September 2026.
This report documents the practices reported during and after the operations and assesses them in light of the European Convention on Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It draws attention to serious human rights violations regarding the grounds for arrest, freedom of association and expression, interference with peaceful assembly, conditions of detention, the right to legal counsel, and the language used by public authorities.
