(09/006) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
According to news reports on 2 September 2026, it emerged that Mehmet Şimşek, a prisoner detained in Antalya prior to the NATO Summit and held at Antalya S-Type Prison, was subjected to physical violence by prison officers on 13 August 2026, resulting in two broken ribs. The report stated that other prisoners sharing the same cell with Mehmet Şimşek had also been subjected to physical violence. It was not possible to ascertain the total number of prisoners who had been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment.
According to press reports on 1 September 2026, the additional building of Diyarbakır Open Prison was holding more prisoners than its capacity, forcing some to sleep on the floor; it was alleged that prisoners were only allowed to bathe once a month and that the food provided was unhygienic.

It was reported that Başaran Aksu, an organising specialist with the Independent Miners’ Union (Bağımsız Maden-İş), who was arrested in Ankara on 26 August 2026 and detained at Ankara Sincan Prison, began a hunger strike on 1 September 2026.
(09/008) Police Intervention at an Event in Istanbul…
On 1 September 2026, to mark the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the municipal police force in Istanbul, the police refused to allow the Head of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Municipal Police Department and other municipal police officials to distribute carnations on Istiklal Avenue in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul.
(09/009) Municipal Councillor Detained as Part of an Investigation into Edirne Municipality…
On 2 September 2026, Engin Yağcılar, a member of the Edirne Municipal Council from the Republican People’s Party (CHP), was detained on allegations of ‘bribery’. Engin Yağcılar was arrested by the magistrates’ court to which he was brought on the same day.
(09/010) Individuals Detained in Izmir…
As part of an investigation into the Seferihisar Municipality in Izmir, two individuals were taken into custody on 28 August 2026. Of these, M.K. was arrested on 1 September 2026 by the magistrates’ court to which he was referred, on charges of “facilitating bribery”, whilst A.D. was released under the judicial control measure of house arrest.
