(07/152) Racist Attack in Istanbul…
According to news reports published on July 28, 2028, it was learned that three individuals—Adem Yıldız, Nuh Yıldız, and Abdurrahman Yılız, who run businesses in Istanbul’s Sarıyer district—were subjected to a racist attack on July 21, 2026, and sustained injuries to various parts of their bodies. It was reported that the three men were also threatened by the same individuals following the attack.
Adem Yıldız, one of the victims, made the following statement to the press regarding the incident: “On July 21, the other party tried to engage us in dialogue. ‘An unpleasant incident occurred. We don’t want this to escalate. We’re shopkeepers, we’re friends. Come here, let’s sit down and work this out,’ they said (…) But as soon as we opened the shop, they came at us. They hurled insults and tried to beat and assault us; they broke our shop sign (…) For about 30 to 35 minutes, they beat and dragged us around. The group of attackers hurled insults like, ‘The state that protects you…’ and ‘The state that protects the Kurds…’ They shouted loudly, hurling curses and insults. Direct insults were directed at our ethnic identity (…) When the police arrived, they simply took us into custody. At that time, I didn’t even know my arm was broken. I wasn’t aware that my foot was injured. (…) Right now, they’re telling us to close our shop and not to come to that neighborhood. They’re also sending us messages through intermediaries, saying, “They will definitely never set foot here again.” We filed a complaint against them. Now they’re threatening us, telling us to go back and retract our statements.

According to news reports published on July 28, 2028, it was learned that a person named Furkan Oğlak was subjected to a racist attack by some fellow passengers while listening to Kurdish music during a bus trip from Diyarbakır to Kastamonu.
(07/154) Journalist Detained in Istanbul…
On July 25, 2025, journalist Fermandar Kardeş was detained in Istanbul following a raid on his home on allegations of “membership in an organization” and “carrying out activities on behalf of an organization.” On July 28, 2026, he was released by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred, subject to judicial control measures including a travel ban and a requirement to sign in regularly. According to news reports, police seized the journalist’s camera, computer, microphone, and memory card.

According to news reports on July 28, 2028, a man named Furkan Oğlak, who was subjected to a racist attack by some fellow passengers while listening to Kurdish music during a bus trip from Diyarbakır to Kastamonu, was taken into custody by police called to the scene and, upon being brought before the magistrate’s court, was reportedly arrested on the grounds of his social media posts on the grounds of “spreading organization propaganda.”

According to news reports published on July 28, 2028, it was learned that seven individuals detained as part of an investigation launched by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding a venue frequented by LGBTI+ individuals were remanded in custody by the magistrate’s court to which they were referred. The grounds for their detention could not be ascertained.
(07/157) Journalists Under Investigation in Istanbul…
According to news reports published on July 28, 2028, it was learned that the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had launched an investigation against BirGün reporter Ebru Çelik and the newspaper’s web coordinators, Uğur Koç and Berkant Gültekin, in connection with a news story covering a ceremony held on July 25, 2026, for new members of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), and that the three journalists had been summoned to give statements.
(07/158) Union Leader on Trial in Istanbul…
The trial of Kanber Saygılı, former General President of Limter-İş, began on July 28, 2026, at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 26. The indictment seeks to convict Kanber Saygılı of the crime of “being a member of an organization.” The court ruled to release Kanber Saygılı and adjourned the hearing to a later date.
Kanber Saygılı had been arrested on February 3, 2026.
