(07/063) Interventions, Detentions, and Bans Related to the NATO Summit Protests…

Of the 139 people detained during the police intervention against the march organized by the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) in Ankara on July 5, 2026, 118 were released on July 9, 2026, following their statements to the prosecutor’s office. The 13 individuals referred to the magistrate’s court with a request for detention were released, with 3 placed under house arrest and 10 subject to other judicial control measures. The 3 lawyers who had been detained were released on July 8, 2026, while the 5 individuals with health issues had been released earlier.

Of the 14 people detained in Kocaeli on July 5, 2026, one (Türker Demirci) was remanded in custody by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred on July 9, 2026, while the remaining 13 were released under judicial supervision.

Of the 73 people detained during the police intervention at a protest held in Ankara on July 7, 2026, all were released on July 10, 2026, following their statements to the prosecutor’s office.

During the police intervention at a protest held in Mersin on July 8, 2026, two of the four people detained were remanded in custody by the magistrate’s court on July 9, 2026, while the other two were released under judicial supervision.

In Adana, one person who had been detained and two others summoned to the Provincial Police Department to give statements were released on July 9, 2026.

Journalist Abbas Vural, who was detained in Kocaeli on July 5, 2026, was released on judicial supervision by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred on July 9, 2026.

(07/065) Trial of a Journalist in Istanbul…

The final hearing in the case filed against BirGün reporter Sarya Toprak at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 2, on the grounds of a news report she had written, was held on July 10, 2026. The court acquitted Sarya Toprak of the charge of “publicly disseminating misleading information.”

(07/066) The Trial of a Journalist in Istanbul…

The trial of journalist Timur Soykan, initiated at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 32 on the grounds of his social media posts, continued on July 10, 2026. The indictment seeks to punish the journalist for the charges of “publicly disseminating misleading information to the public” and “publicly inciting others to commit a crime.” The court adjourned the hearing until September 11, 2026.

(07/067) Person on Trial in Mardin…

In the case filed against Ayşe Gökkan, former spokesperson for Tevgera Jinên Azad (TJA), at the Mardin Nusaybin Criminal Court of First Instance No. 1 on the grounds of her participation in a protest, following the overturning by the Diyarbakır Regional Court of Appeals of the 1-year, 8-month prison sentence she had received for “violating military restricted zones and security zones,” the final hearing of the retrial was held on July 9, 2026. The court acquitted Ayşe Gökkan.

(07/068) Lawsuit Filed Regarding the CHP Istanbul Congress…

The hearing in the lawsuit filed with the Istanbul Civil Court of First Instance No. 45 regarding the annulment of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Congress, held on October 8, 2023, resumed on July 10, 2026. The court ruled that the trustee committee appointed to the CHP provincial administration should continue its duties and adjourned the hearing until October 16, 2026.

(07/069) Banner Removed from Party Headquarters in Istanbul…

According to news reports on July 10, 2026, after a banner featuring a photograph of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, which had been hanging at the CHP Istanbul Provincial Headquarters, was taken down by the trustee committee appointed to the provincial chairmanship, police intervened against party members who rehung the banner and entered the provincial headquarters building to take it down again.

(07/070) Racist Attack in Istanbul…

According to news reports published on July 10, 2026, a hate-fueled racist attack was carried out by an unidentified person or persons on July 7, 2026, at the Surp Garabet Armenian Cemetery in Istanbul’s Üsküdar district, resulting in material damage to six graves and a fountain at the cemetery. It was reported that one person was detained in connection with the attack.

According to news reports on July 10, 2026, it was learned that the phrase “sexual orientation” was removed from the Physician’s Oath during the graduation ceremony at the Faculty of Medicine at Namık Kemal University in Tekirdağ.

(07/072) Internet Content Subject to Access Restrictions…

According to news reports on July 9, 2026, it was learned that access to the X social media account belonging to the Mersin Halkevi had been restricted.

According to news reports on July 10, 2026, it was learned that the X social media account belonging to Hüseyin Küçükbalaban, former Co-Chair of the Human Rights Association (İHD), who had posted about the NATO summit, had been blocked.
