(07/017) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Custody…

It has been reported that comedian Deniz Göktaş—against whom the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation on the grounds of certain statements made during his performance, and who was detained at Istanbul Airport on July 2, 2026, upon his return from abroad—was handcuffed behind his back at the Istanbul Police Department, where he was taken, and that footage of him in this position was published in the media.

(07/018) Interventions, Detentions, and Bans Related to NATO Summit Protests…

On July 2, 2026, three members of the Turkish Communist Party (TKP) who were putting up posters in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district were detained by police on charges of “incitement to commit a crime.” Those detained were released the same day.

On July 2, 2026, a TKP member in Osmaniye was detained on the grounds that their social media posts incited the public to hatred and hostility.

(07/019) Interventions, Detentions, and Bans Targeting Pride Month…

According to news reports on July 3, 2026, it was learned that an investigation had been launched against six lawyers—including Ayşe Öğünçlü, Vice President of the Aydın Bar Association—who were conducting legal observation during the Pride March held in the Kuşadası district of Aydın, and that the lawyers had been summoned to give statements.

The lawyers under investigation are: Ayşe Öğünçlü, Eylem Asrav Akınhay, Lalezar Nergiz, Şahide Sezin Atmaca, Kürşat Emre Sarı, and Muhammed Yusuf Öz.

(07/020) Comedian Arrested in Istanbul…

On July 2, 2026, comedian Deniz Göktaş was detained at Istanbul Airport upon his arrival from abroad on the grounds of statements made in his show. On July 3, 2026, he was remanded in custody by the magistrate’s court to which he was referred, on charges of “insulting religious values” and “insulting the President.”

(07/021) Journalists and Others on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of 15 individuals—including journalist Can Öztürk—who were detained during a police intervention against protesters demonstrating against the participation of Nurettin Yıldız, President of the Social Fabric Foundation, in a conference held at Boğaziçi University, continued on July 3, 2026, at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 69. The indictment seeks to punish the 15 individuals for “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911” and “resisting the performance of official duties.” Following the defense arguments, the court adjourned the hearing until October 23, 2026.

(07/022) Person on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of Hasan Polat, editor of Ceylan Publications, began on July 2, 2026, at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 24. The indictment seeks to punish Hasan Polat for the crime of “being a member of an organization.” The court ruled to continue Hasan Polat’s detention and adjourned the hearing to September 8, 2026.

Hasan Polat had been arrested on February 3, 2026.

(07/023) Social Media Accounts Subject to Access Restrictions…

According to news reports published on July 2, 2026, it was learned that access to the X social media account belonging to the feminist publication Çatlak Zemin was restricted on the grounds of LGBT+ posts.

According to news reports published on July 2, 2026, the X social media account belonging to Sendika.Org was blocked on the grounds of protecting national security and public order.
