(05/078) A Child Subjected to Torture and Other Ill-Treatment by the Police in Bingöl…
It has been reported that during a police raid on a home in the Karlıova district of Bingöl on May 13, 2026, a child named A.B. (15, f) was handcuffed behind her back and subjected to torture and other ill-treatment. It was alleged that the child sustained facial injuries and a broken arm as a result of the torture. News reports indicate that after it became clear that the raid had been conducted on the wrong house following an identity check, the police left the premises without taking any further action.
(05/079) Inmate Whose Release Was Adjourned by the Prison Administration and Observation Board…
It is learned from news reports published on May 13, 2026, that the release of Ahmed Abdi İbrahim, Tuncay Doğan and Nurettin Ataman who were held in Bolu F-Type Prison and had completed their life sentences, were adjourned for six months by the Prison Administration and Observation Board (CİGK). The reports indicate that Ahmed Abdi İbrahim and Tuncay Doğan have been in prison for 32 years, while Nurettin Ataman has been there for 33 years and 4 months.

It has been reported that Sezer Küçükkurt, the owner of the Kocatepe Newspaper published in Afyon, was detained on May 13, 2026, on the charge of “insulting the President” due to a cartoon published in the newspaper regarding the Afyon Mayor’s joining the Justice and Development Party (AKP), and was released after giving a statement.

Regarding the incidents that occurred during a concert held as part of ODTÜ’s traditional Spring Festival, 13 individuals were detained on May 11 and 12, 2026. Of these, 4 were arrested by the magistrate’s court to which they were referred on May 13, 2026, while 9 others—including 3 released under judicial supervision—were released. Accordingly, the number of individuals detained in connection with the incident is 6, while 7 were released under judicial supervision.

As part of an investigation targeting the Tepebaşı Municipality in Eskişehir, 20 people were detained on May 14, 2026, during home raids on allegations of “corruption.”
(05/083) The Trial of the Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor, a Journalist, and Others…
The trial of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, journalist Merdan Yanardağ, and Necati Özkan and Hüseyin Gün, which was filed at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 25, began between May 11–13, 2026. The indictment seeks the conviction of the four individuals on charges of “political espionage.” The court ruled to extend the detention of the four individuals and adjourned the hearing to July 6, 2026. The court also ruled that there was no basis for a decision regarding the trustee appointed to TELE1, the channel owned by Merdan Yanardağ.

The final hearing in the case filed against journalist Reyhan Hacıoğlu at the Van Heavy Penal Court No. 2 was held on May 14, 2026. In the prosecution’s final opinion, Reyhan Hacıoğlu is sought to be sentenced for the crime of “being a member of an organization.” The court sentenced Reyhan Hacıoğlu to 4 years and 2 months in prison for the crime of “knowingly and willingly aiding an organization.”
Reyhan Hacıoğlu was arrested on January 20, 2025, and was released at the first hearing of the case held on June 13, 2025.

Journalist Öznur Değer went to the Van Police Department’s Counter-Terrorism Unit on May 13, 2026, to give a statement as part of an investigation initiated against her by the Mardin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office but transferred to the Van Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office following a decision of lack of jurisdiction.
(05/086) Indictment Prepared Against a Journalist in Ankara…
The indictment prepared by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist İsmail Arı, on the grounds of his news reports and social media posts, was accepted by the Ankara Criminal Court of First Instance No. 2 on May 13, 2026. The indictment seeks the journalist’s punishment for the crimes of “publicly disseminating misleading information” and “violation of confidentiality.”
(05/087) Individuals on Trial in Ankara…
On November 20, 2024, as part of Transgender Day of Remembrance for Victims of Hate Crimes, four people were detained during a police intervention at a press conference held in front of the Kolej Metro station in Ankara. The trial for the case filed against them at the Ankara Criminal Court of First Instance No. 50 began on May 13, 2026. The indictment seeks to punish the four individuals for the offense of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations (No. 2911).” The court adjourned the hearing until October 14, 2026.
