(10/231) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 16, 2024, that, 3 women prisoners (Emine Kaya, Nezete Bölek, Sare Kaya) in Batman M Type Prison were transferred to Erzincan Women’s Prison against their will and demand, before the first hearing of their case on October 24, 2024, at Batman Heavy Penal Court No 2.

It is learned from the news coverage of 17 October 2024 that, Sıddık Güler (84), an ill prisoner in Izmir Menemen R Type Prison, who cannot meet his needs on his own, was transferred to Mersin İskenderun T Type Prison against his will.

It is learned from the news coverage of 16 October 2024 that Habat Demir, an ill prisoner in Izmir High-Security Prison No 1, was not given his medication prescribed by a doctor.

(10/233) Prisoners Whose Release Were Postponed by the Prison Administration and Observation Board…

It is learned from the news coverage of 16 October 2024 that, the release of Cemil İvrendi, a prisoner in Kırşehir S Type Prison, who has completed the execution of his life sentence which corresponds to 30 years according to the law, was postponed for 6 months by the Prison Administration and Observation Board (İGK), on the grounds of ‘not being in good behavior’, for not accepting to repentance.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 17, 2024, that, the release of Onur Kanğal, a prisoner in Samsun Kavak S Type Prison, who completed his sentence of 7 years and 6 months on October 7, 2024, was postponed for 1 year on the grounds of ‘not being in good behavior’ by the Prison Administration and Observation Board.

It is learned that the appeal made on October 3, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

On October 16, 2024, the police and private security units prevented the march after the press statement to protest femicides at Edirne Trakya University and seized the banners carried by students.

(10/236) Gendarmerie Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

On 16 October 2024, the gendarmerie intervened against the peaceful demonstration of AsPlastik workers, who had been on strike for 28 days, to protest the employment of strike breakers in the workplace, and detained 3 workers. Detained workers were released the same day after statement procedures. The names of the workers could not be learned.

It is learned from the news coverage of 16 October 2024 that, a person named M.D. was detained on the grounds of damaging an Atatürk bust in the Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul and was arrested by the criminal peace judgeship.

On 17 October 2024, 18 members of Thousand Young People for Palestine were detained in house raids in Istanbul on the grounds of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’, ‘resisting to prevent duty’ and ‘damaging public property’, on the grounds of participating in the march on Istiklal Street in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on 7 October 2024. On the same day, 18 people were referred to the criminal peace judgeship with the request of arrest by the public prosecutor’s office and were released on judicial control conditions. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 16, 2024, that the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against director Kazım Öz, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’, for showing ‘Zer’ film on a social media platform.

(10/240) Former TTB Central Council President and HRFT Board Member on Trial…

The final hearing of the compensation lawsuit filed against Prof. Dr. Şebnem Korur Fincancı, former President of the Central Council of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) and board member of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT), by the Ministry of National Defence (MSB) due to her statements on human rights violations during a live broadcast on a news channel, was held at Ankara Civil Court of First Instance No 2 on October 17, 2024. The court ruled that Şebnem Korur Fincancı shall pay 50 thousand Turkish Liras of non-pecuniary damages to the Ministry of National Defence (MSB), pending appeal.

(10/241) Former CHP Chair on Trial…

The trial of the case against former Republican People’s Party (CHP) chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, upon the complaint of a former lawyer of the President, continued on 16 October 2024 at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 48. The indictment demands a sentence for Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on the charge of ‘insult’. The court issued a summons for Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu who did not attend the trial and adjourned the trial to a later date. It is reported in the news that the Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 48 canceled the compulsory appearance order on the same date.

(10/242) People on Trial in Bursa…

On 16 October 2024, the first trial of the case against 1 person named Mehmet Altın, who poured Coca-Cola in front of the AKP Gemlik district office to protest against Israel on 23 November 2023, and 1 person, whose name is unknown, who took a video of this protest, started at Bursa Penal Court of First Instance. The indictment demands a sentence for 2 people on the charges of ‘inciting people to hatred and hostility’, ‘damaging property’, and ‘insulting the President’. The court accepted the participation request of the President’s lawyer and adjourned the trial to a later date.

(10/243) Books Seized at the Book Fair in Batman…

It is learned that on 16 October 2024, four copies of the book ‘Gidenlerin Ardından’ (After the Gone Ones) were seized by the police at the stand of Aram Publishing House in the Kurdish Book Fair in Batman, on the grounds of a confiscation warrant. It is reported that an employee of the publishing house gave a statement to the Batman Security Branch.
