The Ministry of National Defence announced on 2 October 2024 that 1 soldier named Burak Geniş lost his life after a military vehicle crashed in Ağrı.

Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) announced on 3 October 2024 that at least 152 workers, including 11 women, 3 children, and 10 migrants/refugees, lost their lives at work in September 2024. Accordingly, the number of people who lost their lives in labor killings in the first 9 months of 2024 was at least 1371.
(10/024) Person Who Lost His Life Due to Gendarmerie Fire…
The Governorate of Diyarbakır announced on October 2, 2024, that 1 person was shot by Diyarbakır Provincial Gendarmerie Command during an operation in Güldiken neighborhood of Diyarbakır’s Lice district on October 2, 2024, allegedly on the grounds that he did not obey stop warning and opened fire at the gendarmerie. 1 person died on the spot, the other person with the deceased person is still being searched and a judicial investigation was initiated. It is claimed in the news reports that the name of the person who lost his life was Halis Demir.

It is learned from the news coverage of 1 October 2024 that, in a group named ‘Sensational Turan Union’ on the Telegram messaging platform, the address and location of the Human Rights Association (IHD) Adana Branch was shared, members and executives of the association were targeted and Abdullah Çatlı, whose name is associated with extrajudicial murders, was referenced in these messages.

It is learned from the news coverage of 2 October 2024 that, 1 person was detained by the police with the use of physical violence in the Sur district of Diyarbakır. The name of the detained person and the reason for the detention could not be learned.
(10/027) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of 1 October 2024 that, prison administrations initiated disciplinary proceedings against some prisoners, whose release was postponed by the decision of the Prison Administration and Observation Board (İGK), although they completed their sentences in various prisons, on the grounds of statements made by prisoners’ families and relatives about postponed release.
It is learned from the news coverage of 3 October 2024 that, Tenzile Acar, an ill prisoner in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison, was subjected to a disciplinary proceeding by the prison administration on the grounds of quarreling with the gendarmerie for demanding gendarmerie to leave the medical examination room, and that Tenzile Acar was sentenced to 13 days of solitary confinement and 1 month visit ban. Rojhat Acar, Tenzile Acar’s relative, stated the following: ‘Tenzile is kept waiting in the corridor, she goes to the gendarmerie doctor and tells her condition, they analyze her and then bring her back to prison. In other words, Tenzile does not see the doctor herself. No information is given about the current stage of her illness. Sometimes when they take her to the doctor, she is either handcuffed or the gendarmerie does not come out, so she refuses to be examined. When I went to see her the other day, I learned that a quarrel broke out because Tenzile did not want the gendarmerie with her during the examination, and Tenzile was given a 13-day solitary confinement sentence and a one-month visit ban. They were sentenced to 13 days in solitary confinement because they sang and danced the halay in the ward. In 2023, they were also penalized for dancing the halay. Everyone in the ward was sentenced to 13 days in solitary confinement and they were taken to solitary confinement in turn’.

It is learned from the news coverage of 3 October 2024 that, Tenzile Acar, an ill prisoner in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison, had a quarrel with the gendarmerie for demanding gendarmerie to leave the medical examination room.

It is learned that the appeal made on October 3, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.
(10/030) Police Intervention Against a March in Istanbul…
On 2 October 2024, the police intervened against the members of the Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) who were marching on Istiklal Street in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul to protest Israeli attacks on Palestine and Lebanon, and detained 5 people including Gazette Patika reporter Yadigar Aygün, using torture and ill-treatment. 5 people were released the same day after statement procedures at the police.

Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Erzurum provincial co-chair Ramazan Karakaş and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Karayazı district former co-chair Çetin Demir, who were detained in house raids in Erzurum through an investigation of the Ağrı Public Prosecutor’s Office on 1 October 2024, were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on 2 October 2024. It is also reported in the news that a confidentiality order was taken for the case. The reason for the arrest could not be learned.
(10/032) A Child and Another Person Detained in Urfa…
On October 3, 2024, 2 people including 1 child were detained in house raids in the Ceylanpınar district of Urfa, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. It is also reported that phones were seized during house searches. The names of the detained people are O.C. (17), Abdullah Robinduz. Detained 2 people were released the same day after statement procedures at the police station.

The trial of the case against 7 people including Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, on the allegation of ‘bid rigging’ continued on 2 October 2024 at Istanbul Büyükçekmece Penal Court of First Instance No 10. The court adjourned the hearing to 20 November 2024.
(10/034) Lawyers on Trial in Istanbul…
The first hearing of the case against lawyer Nazan Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı, executive director of Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD), and lawyer Seda Şaraldı, a member of ÇHD, was held on 2 October 2024 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26. The indictment demands a sentence for the lawyers on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. It is reported in the news that Nazan Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı and Seda Şaraldı refused to make a defence as lawyers who came to watch the trial were not allowed into the courtroom. The court decided to separate the files of Nazan Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı and Seda Şaraldı and to continue the detention of the 2 lawyers. The court also adjourned the trial of Nazan Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı to 6 December 2024 and the trial of Seda Şaraldı to 11 December 2024.
Nazan Betül Vangölü Kozağaçlı and Seda Şaraldı were arrested on 9 February 2024.
(10/035) The Sinan Ateş Case…
On 2 October 2024, the final trial of the case against 22 people including 12 arrestees, for the murder of Sinan Ateş, former chair of the Ülkü Ocakları in Ankara on 30 December 2022, was held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 32. The court heard; Eray Özyağcı, Vedat Balkaya, Doğukan Çep, and Suat Kurt were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for ‘intentional killing with design’, Tolgahan Demirbaş was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for ‘instigating intentional killing with design’, Selman Bozkurt to 13 years imprisonment for ‘attempted intentional killing’ and ‘carrying an unlicensed weapon’, Aşkın Mert Gelenbey and Mustafa Uzunlar to 15 years imprisonment for ‘intentional killing with design’, Murat Can Çolak and Emre Yüksel be sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for ‘intentional killing by design’, Alper Atay be sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for ‘favoring the offender’ and the sentence to be postponed, Caner Güney, Serdar Öktem, Umut Ersoy, Çağlar Zorlu, Osman Bayraktar, Zekeriya Asarkaya, Hakan Saraç, Ufuk Köktürk, and Aytaç Ataç were acquitted and Mustafa Ensar Aykal’s case was separated and his detention continued.
It is also reported in the news that a person reported to be a relative of a defendant used physical violence against Sinan Ateş’s sister Selma Ateş while the court was waiting for the verdict, but no one was injured due to the attack.
(10/036) Newspaper Headline Prevented from Being Printed by a Printing House…
According to the news coverage of 2 October 2024, Yenigün newspaper published in Izmir was prevented by the printing house from carrying the news titled ‘The state creates a vacuum, sects fill it: New dormitory in Izmir from Işıkçılar sect!’ with the headline “Light Infiltrated the Gap” was prevented by the printing house, and the printing house declared that they would not print the newspaper with this headline, and the newspaper was then pressured to change the headline.
(10/037) Discriminatory Statements by a Lawyer in Ankara…
According to the news coverage of 3 October 2024, a lawyer named Alperen Demirdiş, who attended the hearing of his client’s case on 14 May 2024, stated that due to the headscarf of the presiding judge and the member judge, ‘The Republic of Turkey is a secular state of law. The independence of the court is guaranteed in the Constitution. I reject the president and the members of the court who wear religious symbols”. It is also stated in the news reports that a lawsuit was filed against the lawyer on the charges of ‘abuse of office’ and ‘publicly insulting religious values adopted by a section of the public’ at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 35.

It is learned from the news coverage of 2 October 2024 that, 2 Youtube channels named ‘Dila Kent’ and ‘Oyun Kent’ were blocked by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority and 2 channels were made invisible from Turkey by Youtube.
(10/039) Detained People…
On 3 October 2024, 13 people were detained in house raids in Mersin, Adana, and Elazığ through an investigation by the Mersin Public Prosecutor’s Office, on the grounds of being a member of the current ‘student organization’. It is reported that 2 of the detainees were released the same day after statement procedures at the police while 11 people are still in police custody.
