(09/099) People Died and Wounded After Being Hit by a Police Car in Istanbul…

It is reported that on 10 September 2024, in the Şişli district of Istanbul, Ergül Kaya (42, k), one of 2 people walking on the pavement was hit by a police car driven by a police officer named G. U. Ergül Kaya (42, k) died in hospital while A. T. (24, k) is still being treated.

Istanbul Security Directorate announced that the police officer driving the vehicle, G. U., was suspended and a judicial and administrative investigation was initiated.

(09/100) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 10, 2024 that, Erdal Dağhan, a prisoner in Izmir Şakran Prison, was subjected to verbal and physical violence by the gendarmerie and was handcuffed behind his back after he rejected to be subjected to a search through his underwear while being taken to the hearing of the case against him. It is also reported in the news that the gendarmerie turned off the cameras in the ring car and inflicted physical violence on Erdal Dağhan again after he demanded to be referred to hospital to get a medical report which documents the torture he was subjected to, and gendarmes made a nationalist sign and threatened him with the words ‘If you file a complaint, you will be dead’.

(09/101) Police Intervention Against the Press Statement on the Killing of a Girl named Narin Güran in Istanbul…

It is learned that the police prevented the group gathering in front of Süreyya Opera House in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul on September 10, 2024, about the killing of Narin Güran (8, k), who has not been heard from since August 21, 2024, and who was found dead on September 8, 2024; and that the police prevented the group from marching to Rıhtım Square; and that the group overcame the barricades and held a press statement at Rıhtım Square. The police intervened against the group after the press statement and detained 6 people by torture and ill-treatment. It is also reported that journalists Elfazi Toral and Zeynep Kuray and photo reporter Arzu Özkan were subjected to physical violence by the police. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

It is learned from the news coverage of 11 September 2024 that, 1 person named C. B. was detained in the Pınarhisar district of Kırklareli for attacking an Atatürk statue with stones.

(09/103) Security Officer on Trial for the Death of Mehmet Uytun…

The retrial of the case against specialised sergeant H. A. in connection with the death of Mehmet Uytun, a 16-month-old baby, on 9 October 2009 in the balcony of his house in the Cizre district of Şırnak when he was hit in the head by a gas canister fired by security forces intervening against a protest, continued on 10 September 2024 at Cizre Penal Court of First Instance No 1 following the reversal of the 3 years and 4 months imprisonment sentence given to the defendant H. A. on the charge of ‘causing death by negligence’ by the 3rd Criminal Chamber of Diyarbakır Regional Court of First Instance. The court accepted the discovery request and rejected the demand for arrest of defendant H. A. and adjourned the trial to 24 December 2024.

(09/104) Former MPs on Trial…

The trial of the case against former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MPs Hüda Kaya, Serpil Kemalbay, Fatma Kurtulan, Pero Dündar and Garo Paylan, for the Kobanê protests held on 6-8 October 2014, continued on 10 September 2024 at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22. The indictment demands a sentence for the former MPs on the charges of ‘disrupting the unity and territorial integrity of the state’, ‘attempted murder’, ‘damage to property’, ‘detention’, ‘theft’, ‘looting’, ‘violation of inviolability of workplace and residence’, ‘burning the Turkish flag’, ‘opposition to the Law on Protection of Atatürk’. The court rejected the demand for lifting the judicial control measure against Hüda Kaya and adjourned the trial to 5 November 2024.

Hüda Kaya was arrested on 1 November 2023 and released at the hearing held on 25 June 2024.

(09/105) Political Party Executive on Trial…

The first trial of the case against Sıtkı Güngör, Party Assembly member of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), started on 10 September 2024 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 11. The indictment demands a sentence for Sıtkı Güngör on the charge of ‘leading an illegal organization’. After defense hearings the court released Sıtkı Güngör with a ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to 27 February 2025.

Sıtkı Güngör was detained on 27 February 2024 during a police raid on a house reported to be the official residence of DEM Party Istanbul MP Çiçek Otlu and was arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on 2 March 2024.

(09/106) A Lawyer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against lawyer Serhat Hezer continued on 10 September 2024 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5. The indictment demands a sentence for Serhat Hezer on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to 3 October 2024.

(09/107) People on Trial in Istanbul…

It is learned that the trial of the case against Gülsüm Elvan, mother of Berkin Elvan who was killed by a gas canister fired by the police during Gezi Park protests, and Sami Elvan, father of Berkin Elvan, on Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 43, which was to be held on September 10, 2024, is adjourned to a later date due to leave of absence of the judge. The indictment demands a sentence for both of them on the charge of ‘insulting the President’.

(09/108) People on Trial in Kayseri…

According to the news coverage of 17 July 2024, the final trial of the case against 2 people (Y. K. and Z. A.) who were arrested on the allegations of attacking a statue of Atatürk with an axe in the Cumhuriyet Square in the Kocasinan district of Kayseri on 16 June 2024, was held at Kayseri Penal Court of First Instance No 14 on 10 September 2024. The court sentenced 2 people to 2 years and 6 months each for ‘destroying and damaging the bust of Atatürk’ and 1 year and 10 months each for ‘publicly insulting the memory of Atatürk’, for a total of 4 years and 4 months. The court also ruled for the release of 2 people.

(09/109) Ban of Access to Web Content…

It is learned from the news coverage of 10 September 2024 that, a social media account named HUGOLA belonging to a person named Hürkan Gügen was banned to access by Information and Communication Technologies Authority and the account was made invisible from Turkey.
