(07/067) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2024, that 2 militants died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in the Hakurk region of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in April 2024.

(07/068) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Batman…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 6, 2024, that 7 people were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during house raids in the Dereiçi village of the Gercüş district of Batman and Bayındırlık neighborhood of Batman central district. Names of the people could not be learned.

(07/069) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Mardin…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2024, that 1 person who was stopped by neighborhood watchers in the Artuklu district of Mardin had a quarrel with the watchmen and was subjected to physical violence by them and the police officers who were dispatched to the scene also subjected the same person to physical violence. The name of the person could not be learned.

(07/070) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 5, 2024, that in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison, prisoners’ rooms are searched every 15 days, and personal belongings of prisoners are seized, disciplinary proceedings are initiated against prisoners on the grounds of some items that were returned to prisoners after being seized during the search; and that during the last search, a table and some of the chairs in a ward for 18 people were seized, leaving 8 chairs in the ward.

According to the news coverage of July 7, 2024, the Human Rights and Equality Institution of Turkey (TİHEK) prepared a report on its visits to Maltepe L Type Prison and Afyon T Type Prison and stated that although the capacity of Maltepe L Type Prison is 1070 prisoners, 2188 prisoners are kept in the prison and some prisoners have to sleep on the floor, there is only 1 washing machine in the prison and not all prisoners can use it, although 16 complaints were made to the Presidential Communication Center (CIMER) about a prison staff member in the last 1 year on the allegations of torture and other ill-treatment, the administrative investigation against the person in question was decided as ‘no punishment’, that there were insects in the dormitory part of a room, that there were no handles in the bathrooms and toilets for sick and disabled prisoners, and that a toilet was in the line of sight of a camera.

In the same report, it was stated that although the capacity of Afyon T Type Prison is 1212, 1334 prisoners are kept in the prison, the rooms reserved for sick and disabled prisoners are not suitable for disabled people, women prisoners do not have a dryer, one toilet is in the field of sight of the camera, there are no disposable aprons in the search rooms and searches are not conducted in accordance with the legislation.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2024, that some of the 250 prisoners who were poisoned from the food given to prisoners in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) Prison campus on June 28, 2024, were not referred to hospital and some of them still have ongoing complaints.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 8, 2024, that letters written by Sinem Çelebi, a prisoner in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison were seized without any justification, and a drawing she drew was torn and returned to her.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 8, 2024, that the letter sent by Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Istanbul MP Çiçek Otlu to Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Deputy Co-Chair Ebru Yiğit in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison was not given to Ebru Yiğit by the letter reading commission on the grounds that it would ”give morale to prisoners”.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2024, that Servet Özgün, a prisoner who was subjected to ill-treatment by 5 correction officers (D. H., F. İ., O. T., C. K. and S. D.) in Giresun Espiye L Type Prison, started a hunger strike on June 23, 2024, demanding public prosecution against the correction officers.

(07/072) Lawyers Detained in Istanbul…

Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) Istanbul branch executive Naim Eminoğlu and branch member Doğa İncesu, who were detained on July 2, 2024, in house raids on the allegations of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, were released by the criminal peace judgeship on judicial control conditions on July 4, 2024.

(07/073) People Detained in Artvin…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 8, 2024, that Dursun Ali Koyuncu and Ali Şükrü Kibar, executive board members of Artvin Halkevi, were detained after holding a press statement on July 7, 2024, against the establishment of a touristic facility in Borçka Cankurtaran Pass in Artvin. 2 people were released from Public Prosecutor’s Office on July 8, 2024.

(07/074) People Detained in Batman…

According to the news coverage of July 6, 2024, 14 people were detained in house raids in the Dereiçi village of Gercüş district of Batman and Bayındırlık neighborhood of Batman central district on the allegations of ‘financing an illegal organization’ and ‘aiding an illegal organization’.

Names of the detainees: Murat Gelir, Abdülcelil Gitmez, Yüksel Gitmez, Nedim Kaya, Emine Kaya, Halil Şimşek, Süleyman Kapan, İsa Gitmez, Mehmet Gelir, Yusuf Bölük, Habip Kaya, Mehmet Emin Sağlam, Nezeta Bölük and Reber Gelir.

(07/075) Journalist and Others on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 52 people, including journalist Yağmur Kaya, who were detained in the police intervention against the press statement to protest the rector appointed by the President to Boğaziçi University on March 25, 2021; was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 17 on July 5, 2024. The court adjourned the trial to October 11, 2024.

(07/076) Publishing House Founder on Trial in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 6, 2024, that Rıdvan Sain, the founder of Amara Press Publishing House, where the book series ‘Democratic Civilization Solution’ written by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and containing his defenses was published, was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14. The court acquitted Rıdvan Sain in the retrial after the verdict was reversed by Penal Department No 3 of the Court of Cassation.

(07/077) The Sinan Ateş Case…

The first hearing of the lawsuit filed against 22 people in relation to the murder of Sinan Ateş, former President of Ülkü Ocakları in Ankara on December 30, 2022, was held between July 1, 2024, and July 5, 2024, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 32. The court decided to file a criminal complaint against the alleged instigator Doğukan Çep for ‘threatening in a chain’ due to his threats against the complainants, ruled for the release of 10 defendants and the continuation of the arrest of 12 defendants and adjourned the trial to July 19, 2024.

(07/078) Village Guards and Others on Trial in Şırnak…

On July 5, 2024, Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 3 started to hear the case against retired village guards Enver Babat and Ömer Yarar and village guard Sıddık Babat and his son Ebubekir Babat in connection with the armed attack in Şenoba rural area of Şırnak’s Uludere district on December 11, 2023, in which Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Şenoba district council member and party executive Ahmet Gün lost his life and his son Abdurrahim Gün was wounded. The court decided to continue the arrest of village guard Sıddık Babat and adjourned the trial to October 4, 2024.

The Governorate of Batman announced on July 8, 2024, that press statements, sit-in protests, polls, opening/setting up tents and stands, organizing petitions, distributing leaflets, brochures, and flyers, and all kinds of protest actions will be banned for 15 days between July 1, 2024, and July 15, 2024.

(07/080) Banner Banned from University Graduation Ceremony…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 6, 2024, that at the graduation ceremony of Yıldız Technical University held on July 5, 2024, a student carrying a banner saying ‘Those who rob us are not immigrants and poor, but local and rich’ was banned by the officials on the grounds that it was “not related to the department”.

(07/081) Person Detained in Balıkesir…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 7, 2024, that 1 person with a finalized prison sentence in the Kepsut district of Balıkesir was arrested and sent to prison.
