(05/282) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 29, 2024, that 1 militant died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in the Zap region of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in March 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 29, 2024, that a military operation was launched in the rural areas of the Örgülü (Tasûh) village in the Hizan district of Bitlis on May 28, 2024, and Secaattin Karabaş (76, m) and Şeref Yılmaz (75, m) were detained in house raids. 2 people were released the same day after statement procedures at the police.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 28, 2024, that Kenan Kaya, a prisoner in Samsun S Type Prison, was subjected to disciplinary proceedings by the prison administration for refusing to be subjected to a mouth search.

(05/284) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 28, 2024, that Kenan Kaya, a prisoner in Samsun S Type Prison was subjected to a mouth search before being transferred to a hospital for a heart attack on April 29, 2024; and that Kenan Kaya was not taken to hospital after he rejected the search, On April 30, 2024, Kenan Kaya was taken to Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine Hospital where he was hospitalized due to continued ill health. It is learned that Kenan Kaya was kept in the detention room of the gendarmerie station close to the hospital for 1 day and was taken back to prison the next day.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 29, 2024, that İzzethan Aykut, an ill prisoner in Afyon T Type Prison was not referred to the hospital because of refusing to be subjected to a mouth search.

(05/285) Police Intervention against a Demonstration in Ankara…

The police intervened against the sit-in protest of Private Sector Teachers’ Union in front of the Ministry of National Education in Ankara on May 29, 2024, and detained 12 union members including a Human Rights Association (IHD) executive board member and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) Central Anatolia Regional Coordinator İsmail Boyraz and Labour Party (EMEP) Ankara provincial chair Rüstem Kahraman who was there in solidarity. It is learned that the detainees were handcuffed behind their backs and they have marks on their wrists due to the tightness of the handcuffs. Detained people were released after statement procedures.

It is learned that 13 people including 7 children were detained in house raids in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari on May 26, 2024. 2 children (E. Ş. and İ. B.) were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on the charges of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ on May 28, 2024. 5 children (Ü. K., D. E, E. A., H. T. and U. S.) were released on judicial control conditions. 6 people (Furkan Bartın, Cömert Orbay, Engin Keskin, Fazıl Kaya, Sekvan Çapa and Demhat Kurt) were released after statement procedures at the police on May 27, 2024.

On May 18, 2024, Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Assembly member and Young Women Coordination member Senem Eriş, who was arrested on charges of ‘resisting to prevent duty’ and ‘opposition to Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’ after being detained with torture and ill-treatment during the police intervention against the group gathered for İbrahim Kaypakkaya commemoration in front of Süreyya Opera in Kadıköy district of Istanbul, Revolutionary Forces of Youth (Dev-Güç) member Gürdağ Efe Tunç, New Democratic Youth (YDG) member Volkan Atmaca and Tahsin Aladağ were released by Istanbul Anatolian Court of First Instance on May 28, 2024 upon their lawyers’ appeal against their detention.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 29, 2024, that Pine Cafe in the Yenişehir district of Diyarbakır, which was announced to serve only in Kurdish after May 15, Kurdish Language Day, was raided by the police and the owner Ramazan Şimşek was detained.

(05/289) People Arrested after the May 1 Celebrations…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 29, 2024, that 5 people (Bengisu Keskiner, Dilan Tekin, Yılmaz Çelik, Kemal Demirtaş and Nazlı Doğan) who were detained for wanting to march to Taksim during May 1 celebrations but were arrested on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ on the grounds of some slogans they shouted in another peaceful demonstration on a previous date, were released upon an appeal.

(05/290) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalist Pelin Özkaptan for 2 posts she made on social media in 2019 and 2022, continued on May 28, 2024 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization in a chain’. The court adjourned the hearing to October 9, 2024.

(05/291) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

On May 28, 2024, the trial of the case against journalist Furkan Karabay, on the grounds of a social media post he made on November 2, 2023, filed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s former lawyer, demanding 250 thousand TRY for non-pecuniary damages, continued at Istanbul Civil Court of First Instance No 32. The court rejected the lawsuit on procedural grounds and ruled for lack of jurisdiction.

On May 29, 2024, the trial of the new case against 11 people, including Yasin Hayal, one of the instigators of the murder, former police chiefs Ramazan Akyürek, Ali Fuat Yılmazer and Ogün Samast, who was sentenced to 22 years and 10 months in prison for the murder of Hrant Dink and released on probation on November 15, 2023 “in consideration of good behavior”, continued at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14. The indictment demands a sentence for the defendants on the charges of ‘attempting to overthrow the constitutional order’, ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, ‘committing crimes on behalf of an illegal organization without being a member of it’ and ‘intentional killing’. The court adjourned the trial to June 12, 2024.

(05/293) Person on Trial for the Death of Cihan Aymaz…

On May 28, 2024, the trial of the case against Mehmet Caymaz, who killed musician Cihan Aymaz on May 2, 2023, for not playing the song ‘Ölürüm Türkiyem’, continued at Istanbul Anadolu Heavy Penal Court No 22. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded a sentence for Mehmet Caymaz on the charge of ‘intentional killing’. The court adjourned the trial to June 8, 2024.

The final hearing of the case against Hatice Kocalar (75, K), who opposed the activities of a mining company in the Tavas district of Denizli, on the allegation of ‘simple injury with a weapon’, was held at Denizli Tavas Criminal Court of First Instance on May 28, 2024. The court sentenced Hatice Kocalar to a total fine of 4,480 TL.

(05/295) Indictment Prepared against Former MPs…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 28, 2024 that the indictment prepared by Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MPs Hüda Kaya, Serpil Kemalbay Pekgözegü, Fatma Kurtulan, Garo Paylan and Pero Dündar, on the grounds of Kobanê protests on October 6 – 8, 2014, was sent to Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22. The indictment demands a sentence for MPs on the charges of ‘disrupting the unity and territorial integrity of the state’, ‘attempted murder’, ‘damage to property’, ‘detention’, ‘theft’, ‘looting’, ‘violation of the inviolability of workplace and residence’, ‘burning Turkish flag’, ‘violation of Law on Protection of Atatürk’.

(05/296) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Coup Attempt…

On May 29, 2024, 9 people were detained in operations carried out in Izmir.
