It is learned that the appeal made on May 17, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.
(05/170) Party Members Subjected to Physical Violence by Village Guards in Diyarbakır…
It is learned from the news coverage of May 16, 2024 that, a quarrel broke out between village guards and a group of people in the Hazro district of Diyarbakır. It is learned that 6 people (Veysi Cansevgili, Halil Taşkesen, Seçkin Dolan, Şahabettin Dolan, Senan Dolan and Sayın Çiçek) were subjected to physical violence by village guards and 6 people were wounded due to physical violence. It is reported that members of the Dolan family, who were subjected to physical violence by the village guards, went to the Hazro District Security Directorate and filed a criminal complaint.
Tayfun Dolan made the following statement to the press: “At noon, the village guards claimed that children threw stones at their car while they were passing on the road and caused tension. People intervened in the tension and the incident was resolved. We made peace and went to sit in our family association. In the 3 hours that passed, a car from the same family passed in front of us and stopped. He said, ‘Why are you looking at us the wrong way’ and started an argument. As the argument continued, they attacked us together with the people who came in 15 other cars.”

20 of 27 people who were detained and arrested on April 2 – 3, 2024 in Van, on the grounds of participating in the protests against the refusal to hand over the municipality license of Abdullah Zeydan, who was elected Co-Mayor of Van Metropolitan Municipality from Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) in the March 31, 2024 elections, were released by the interim decision of the court on May 16, 2024. 7 people were released after their lawyers’ objections.
21 of 55 people who were detained in Van on May 13, 2024, for the same reason were arrested by the Criminal Peace Judgeship between May 14 and 17, 2024 on the charges of ‘resisting to prevent duty’, ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘damaging public property’. 34 of them were released on judicial control conditions.
It is learned that detention period of 16 people who were detained for the same reason in house raids in Izmir on May 15, 2024, is extended for 24 hours on May 16, 2024.

Cahit Akıl, Co-Chair of Birca Belek Language and Culture Association and artist Umut Reşit Çağlı were detained on May 17, 2024, in Cizre district of Şırnak. The reason for the detention could not be learned.

The police intervened against people gathering in the Çeşme district of Izmir on May 16, 2024, to protest the verdicts in Kobanê Case, and detained 6 people. Names of the detained people are Ali Güleser, Ali Akkuş, Koray Türkay, Nuran Dokçu, Cesim Kaya, Hüsnü Çetin.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 16, 2024, that the police prevented the journalists and the advisor of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Urfa MP Ferit Şenyaşar, who wanted to follow the justice watch of Emine Şenyaşar in front of Ministry of Justice, whose husband Hacı Esvet Şenyaşar and sons Adil and Celal Şenyaşar were killed after a quarrel between Justice and Development Party (AKP) MP candidate İbrahim Halil Yıldız and his bodyguards and shopkeepers in Suruç district of Urfa on June 14, 2018.

On May 16, 2024, at least 5 people were detained in house raids in Mardin. The reason for the detentions could not be learned. Names of the detained people are Şeyhmus Önder, Sevim Kurğa, Azize Alam, Fatime Alam and Selman Aktaş.

The final hearing of the case against 108 members and executives of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) including former co-chairs, 18 of whom are arrested, was held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22 on May 16, 2024. The court decided on the following sentences:
Ahmet Türk to be sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’;
Ali Ürküt to 17 years and 1 month imprisonment (13 years and 4 months for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and 3 years and 9 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’) and to continue his detention;
Alp Altınörs to be sentenced to 18 years and 18 months for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and 4 years and 9 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’, to a total of 22 years and 9 months imprisonment and to continue his detention;
Acquittal of Altan Tan on charges of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’, ‘establishing and leading an illegal organization’, ‘inciting the public to unlawful meetings and demonstrations’, ‘incitement to commit crime’;
Acquittal of Ayhan Bilgen on the charges of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’, ”being a member of an illegal organization’, ‘incitement to commit an offense’, ‘inciting the public to unlawful meetings and demonstrations’;
Ayla Akat Ata to be sentenced to 9 years and 9 months imprisonment on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’ and to be released;
Aynur Aşan to be sentenced to 9 years imprisonment on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and to continue her detention;
Acquittal of Aysel Tuğluk on the charge of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’;
Ayşe Yağcı to be sentenced to 9 years imprisonment on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and to be released;
Acquittal of Berfin Özgü Köse on the charge of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’;
Acquittal of Bircan Yorulmaz on the charge of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’;
Bülent Parmaksız to be sentenced to 16 years for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit a crime’, for a total of 20 years and 6 months and to continue his detention;
Acquittal of Can Memiş on the charge of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’;
Cihan Erdal to be sentenced to a total of 20 years and 6 months imprisonment (16 years for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’);
Dilek Yağlı to be sentenced to 16 years for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’ for a total of 20 years and 6 months, and to continue her detention;
Emine Ayna to be sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’;
Acquittal of Emine Beyza Üstün on the charge of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’;
Figen Yüksekdağ Şenoğlu to be sentenced to 19 years for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’, 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’, 7 years for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’, 2 years for ‘inciting the public to unlawful meetings and demonstrations’, 3 months for ‘violating election bans’ for a total of 32 years and 9 months and to continue her detention;
Gülfer Akkaya acquitted on the charge of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’;
Acquittal of Gülser Yıldırım on the charge of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’;
Gülten Kışanak to be sentenced to 12 years imprisonment on the charge of ”being a member of an illegal organization” and to be released;
Günay Kubilay to 16 years for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’ and to continue his detention;
Acquittal of İbrahim Binici on the charges of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and ‘being a member of an illegal organization’;
İsmail Şengül to be sentenced to 16 years for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and to 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’ and to continue his detention;
Meryem Adıbelli to be sentenced to 9 years for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and to be released;
Mesut Bağcık to be sentenced to 9 years imprisonment for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’;
Nazmi Gür to be sentenced to 18 years for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’, to 22 years and 6 months in total, and to continue his detention;
Nezir Çakan to be sentenced to 9 years imprisonment on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, to be given a ban on leaving the country, and to have other judicial control measures lifted;
Pervin Oduncu to be sentenced to a total of 22 years and 6 months imprisonment (18 years for ‘disrupting the unity and territorial integrity of the state’ and 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’) and to continue her detention;
Sebahat Tuncel to be sentenced to 12 years on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and to be released on judicial control conditions with a ban on leaving the country;
Selahattin Demirtaş to 20 years for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’, 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’, 1 year and 6 months for ‘inciting the public to disobey the law’, 10 years for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’, 3 years for ‘encouraging or inciting unlawful meetings or demonstrations’, sentenced him to a total of 42 years imprisonment, 1 year and 6 months for ‘organizing or leading unlawful meetings or demonstrations and participating in their movements’ and 1 year and 6 months for ‘praising the offense and the offender’, and ruled for the continuation of his detention;
Acquittal of Sırrı Süreyya Önder on the charges of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and lifting the judicial control measures against him;
Acquittal of Sibel Akdeniz on the charge of ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and lifting the judicial control measures against her;
Zeki Çelik to be sentenced to 22 years and 6 months, 18 years for ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’ and 4 years and 6 months for ‘inciting to commit an offense’, to continue the judicial control measure of ban on leaving the country and to await the execution of the arrest warrant issued against him;
Zeynep Karaman to be sentenced to a total of 22 years and 6 months imprisonment (18 years for ‘disrupting the unity of the state and integrity of the country’ and 4 years and 6 months for ‘incitement to commit an offense’) and to continue her detention;
Zeynep Ölbeci was sentenced to 12 years and 9 months, 9 years for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and 3 years and 9 months for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’.
The court also decided to separate the case file against 72 people.
(05/178) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…
The first trial of the case against journalist Furkan Karabay, for his news article titled “Bribery fight in Mafia case in minutes” and 1 social media post, started on May 16, 2024 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 24. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charges of ‘targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism’ and ‘publicly insulting a public officer for his duty’.
The court decided to continue the judicial control measures against Furkan Karabay and adjourned the trial to July 2, 2024.

The final hearing of the case filed against journalist Barış Terkoğlu due to ‘insult’ with the complaint of Süheyb Öğüt based on some of his statements in the interview titled ‘Pelikancıların İstanbul Savaşı’ in 2019, was held on May 17, 2024 at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 27. The court acquitted the journalist.

The first trial of the case against lawyer Feyza Altun, based on a social media post, started on May 16, 2024, at Istanbul Beykoz Penal Court of First Instance No 5. The court sentenced the lawyer to 9 months imprisonment and lifted the judicial control measures against her.

The first trial of the case against lawyer Serhat Hezer started on May 16, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5. The indictment demands a sentence for the lawyer on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court decided to lift the judicial control measure and continue the ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to September 10, 2024.
