It is learned from the news coverage of April 25, 2024, that 2 militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) units and HPG militants in the Gare area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (IKBY) on April 1, 2024.
(04/171) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in a Removal Center in Antalya…
It is learned from the news coverage of April 23, 2024, that 14 refugees, including Omid Eshaghi, an Iranian citizen who raised allegations of torture and ill-treatment after refugees in Döşemealtı Removal Center in Antalya started a hunger strike for being subjected to torture and ill-treatment by private security guards and not being able to exercise their right to access health care, were transferred to Van Removal Center against their will. It is reported that the authorities of the institution did not inform the lawyers of the refugees about the transfer.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 24, 2024, that disciplinary proceedings were initiated against prisoners who refused to take off their shoes after visits in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison on March 28, 2024. On March 28, 2024, prisoners were forced to take off their shoes after visits, and prisoners who refused to do so were subjected to physical violence by the correction officers.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 24, 2024, that a person named M. T., who warned a specialist sergeant about where he parked his car in the Kulp district of Diyarbakır on April 23, 2024, was subjected to threats of the specialist sergeant and after a quarrel between them, the specialist sergeant opened fire randomly.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 24, 2024, that before the justice watch of Emine Şenyaşar, whose husband Hacı Esvet Şenyaşar and sons Adil and Celal Şenyaşar were killed after a quarrel between Justice and Development Party (AKP) parliamentary candidate İbrahim Halil Yıldız and his bodyguards and shopkeepers in Suruç district of Urfa on June 14, 2018, riot police and police officers blocked in front of the Ministry of Justice and prevented journalists from taking footage.

(04/178) The Case of the Ankara Station Massacre…
On April 24, 2024, Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 4 continued to hear the retrial of the case against 26 people including 10 arrestees in connection with the suicide bomb attack of ISIS against the Peace Rally in Ankara on October 10, 2015, in which 103 people lost their lives. The prosecutor declared his final opinion on the case and demanded Erman Ekinci to be sentenced for ‘violating the constitutional order’, 10 defendants to be acquitted of the charges against them and the other defendants to be sentenced for ‘intentional killing’. Rejecting the demands of the lawyers, the court decided to continue detention of the arrested defendants and adjourned the trial to June 26, 2024.

The final trial of the case against 13 people for the train crash in Çorlu district of Tekirdağ on July 8, 2018, in which 25 people died and 328 people were injured, was held at Çorlu Heavy Penal Court No 1 on April 25, 2024. The court sentenced Railway Maintenance Manager Turgut Kurt to 16 years and 3 months, Road Maintenance and Repair Supervisor Özkan Polat to 13 years and 9 months, TCDD Regional Manager Nihat Aslan to 15 years, Regional Railway Maintenance Manager Mümin Karasu to 17 years and 6 months on the charge of ‘causing death and injury to more than one person with conscious negligence’. Assistant Maintenance Service Area Manager Levent Muammer Meriçli was sentenced to 9 years and 2 months, TCDD First Regional Maintenance Assistant Manager Nizamettin Aras was sentenced to 8 years and 4 months, TCDD engineers Tevfik Baran Önder was sentenced to 10 years, Deniz Parlak and Kubilay Başkaya were sentenced to 9 years and 2 months each for ‘causing death and injury by negligence’; and Assistant Regional Maintenance Service Manager Levent Kaytan was sentenced to 15 years, TCDD First Regional Maintenance Assistant Nizamettin Aras was sentenced to 8 years and 4 months, TCDD engineers Tevfik Baran Önder was sentenced to 10 years, Deniz Parlak and Kubilay Başkaya were sentenced to 9 years and 2 months each. Regional Maintenance Service Assistant Manager Levent Kaytan, Road Controller Burhan Ortancıl, Bridges Supervisor Çetin Yıldırım and Line Maintenance and Repair Officer Celaleddin Çabuk were acquitted separately.

The trial of the case against 46 journalists, known as “KCK Press Case”, continued on April 25, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 3. The court adjourned the hearing to October 3, 2024.

The trial of the lawsuit filed against journalist Furkan Karabay, on the grounds of 2 news reports and his social media posts about the news reports, with the complaint of Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor, demanding 150.000 TL compensation, continued on April 24, 2024, at Istanbul Civil Court of First Instance No 12. The court adjourned the hearing to November 21, 2024.

The final trial of the case against journalist Mehmet Salih Turan, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ through 11 social media posts he made between July 2016 and November 2017, was held on April 24, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32, after the Constitutional Court annulled the 1 year and 3 months jail sentence and the deferment of the announcement of the verdict on March 21, 2019. The court decided to dismiss the case due to the expiration of the five-year supervision period.
Mehmet Salih Turan was arrested on February 12, 2019, on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and was released on the trial held on March 21, 2019.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 24, 2024, that journalist Mehmet Güleş, who was called to testify at the Provincial Security Directorate through an investigation on the grounds of his social media posts, was released by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on judicial control conditions after statement procedures.

It is learned from the news coverage of April 24, 2024, that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office issued an indictment against journalist Asuman Aranca for a news report she made on the killing of Sinan Ateş, former chair of Ülkü Ocakları. The indictment demands a jail sentence of up to 3 years for the journalist on the charge of ‘violation of confidentiality’.

The trial of the case about Tahir Güven, brother of Justice and Development Party (AKP) district chair Cihan Güven, who died in an armed attack in the Cizre district of Şırnak on December 4, 2021, was held at Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 2 on April 24, 2024. The prosecutor declared the final opinion and demanded life imprisonment for Tevgera Jinen Azad (TJA) activist Sümeyye Gök and Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Youth Assembly member Miraç Dinç on the charges of ‘premeditated murder’ and ‘disrupting the unity and integrity of the state’. The court adjourned the trial to May 17, 2024.

The trial of the case against Fatih Haral, who shared personal information and photos of Diyarbakır Bar Association President Nahit Eren and his family and threatened them with death, was held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 9 on April 25, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for Fatih Haral on the charges of ‘insulting with a written or visual message’ and ‘simple threat’. After the defense, the court adjourned the trial to October 25, 2024.

On April 24, 2024, Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Provincial Organization building was raided by the police on the grounds of a ‘denunciation’ against DEM Party Youth Assembly. It is learned that the police responded to the warnings of party members that no search can be conducted without the presence of lawyers and provincial co-chairs by saying “We will search, go and complain wherever you want” and closed the entrances and exits of the building. It is learned that the police entered the party building without showing the search warrant and seized women’s agendas, Jineloji Magazine and some books.

The Constitutional Court (AYM), which evaluated the application of Can Memiş, a former Central Executive Committee (MYK) member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) who was arrested in September 2020 through the Kobanî Case and released in June 2021, ruled that the ‘right to personal liberty and security’ was violated and decided to award Can Memiş 40 thousand TL compensation.

The Governorate of Şırnak announced on April 24, 2024, that Gabar Mountain Region in the borders of Central District and Güçlükonak District of Şırnak Province and Cudi Mountain Region in the borders of Central District, Silopi and Cizre Districts of Şırnak Province have been declared as temporary special security zones for 15 days between April 25, 2024, and May 9, 2024, and all access to these areas is banned.
