(05/096) Labour Killings…

On May 13, 2022, the Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 129 workers including 8 women, 2 children and 10 migrant workers died while working in April 2022. 479 workers died in labour killings in the first four months of 2022.

(05/097) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Oktay Salar) died and 3 soldiers and 1 civilian were injured in the attack from Aleppo region of Syria to Köprübaşı Border Police station in the Karkamış district of Antep on May 12, 2022.

(05/098) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Istanbul…

It is learned that Halime Demirkapı, a musician of the Mesopotamia Cultural Center (MKM), was held by her hair and was forced to lie on the ground, and was subjected to torture and other ill-treatment during the police raid on her home in Istanbul on May 12, 2022. It is stated in the news reports that the instrument belonging to Halime Demirkapı was broken during the search of the house, and the books, magazines and music books found in the house were seized by the police.

(05/099) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Istanbul…

It is learned that during the police raid on a house in the Bahçelievler district of Istanbul on May 12, 2022, 2 people (Vedat Özdemir and Münevver Ilgın) were subjected to torture and other ill-treatment. It is reported that Vedat Özdemir was injured in the face as a result of the torture and other ill-treatment he was subjected to. It is reported that Münevver Ilgın was detained after the raid.

Vedat Özdemir stated the following to the press: “Even though I said that I had a problem with my head, the police continued to hit my head. After the raid, I went and received a report of violence (…) They also beat Münevver.”

(05/100) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned that 2 prisoners (Mazlum Erdem and Gökhan Yıldız) who were transferred from Adana Ceyhan M Type Prison to Adana Kürkçüler F Type Prison on May 12, 2022, were subjected to strip search at the prison entrance and were forced to stand in the military order during the roll-calls.

(05/101) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on May 12, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to visit him was not responded.

(05/102) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 12, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(05/103) Detained People in Diyarbakır…

On May 12, 2022, 5 people (Gülten Farisoğulları, Yaşar Kaya, Beraat Karadaş, Fesih Kaya and Mehmet İmamoğlu) are detained in house raids in Diyarbakır. The reason of detention is unknown.

(05/104) Detained People in Şırnak…

On May 12, 2022, 9 people (Zeynep Ecer, Çimen Ecer, Azat Bayram, Sadık Bayar, Ferhat Sirkeci, Sedin Bozkurt, Sait Yaşar, Taybet Asikar and Şükrü Elçi) are detained in house raids in Cizre district of Şırnak. The reason of detention is unknown.

(05/105) Human Rights Defender and Other People on Trial for ‘Insulting the President’ in Izmir…

The first trial of the case against 3 people including rights defender Aytül Uçar, medical secretary of the HRFT in Izmir, on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ is held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 41 on May 13, 2022. 3 people (Aytül Uçar, Emine Akbaba and İrem Çelikbaş) have been detained by the police intervening the protest against the new rector appointed to Boğaziçi University, held in Izmir on February 3, 2021.

The court rejected the immediate acquittal request of the lawyers. It is learned that Emine Akbaba and Aytül Uçar stated that they have been subjected to torture and ill-treatment during detention and in the detention vehicle. The court accepted intervention request of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan based on the possibility that he was the victim of the offense, decided to request the indictment of the case at İzmir Penal Court of First Instance No 41 regarding 6 people, including the 3 defendants, and to request the camera footage from the detention vehicle on the day of the incident. The court adjourned the trial to September 2, 2022. The first trial of the case, which was supposed to be held on November 18, 2021, was postponed twice.

(05/106) The Case Against CHP Executive…

On May 12, 2022, the Penal Chamber No 3 of Court of Cassation decided on the appeal against the conviction decision in the lawsuit filed against the Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu, on the grounds of her social media posts between 2012 and 2017. The court approved the sentences of 1 year 6 months and 20 days for ‘insulting a public official’ and 1 year and 8 months for ‘publicly degrading the State of the Republic of Turkey’. The court reduced the sentence of 2 years and 4 months to 1 year and 9 months, on the charge of ‘insulting the President’.  The court reversed the sentence of 4 years and 2 months, on the charges of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and ‘publicly inciting hatred and hostility’.

(05/107) The Case Against Former CHP MP…

On May 12, 2022, the Penal Chamber No 3 of Court of Cassation decided on the appeal against the conviction decision in the lawsuit filed against former CHP MP Eren Erdem, through the “Fethullahist Terrorist Organisation/ Parallel State Structure” investigations; and reversed the jail sentence of 4 years and 2 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(05/108) The Case Against Former HDP MP…

The trial of the case against Çağlar Demirel, former Group Deputy of HDP and former Diyarbakir MP, on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ by her expressions “We are returning the same to Erdogan”, is held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 14 on May 12, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to September 27, 2022.

(05/109) Former Co-Mayor on Trial…

The trial of the case against HDP Democratic Local Authorities Board member and former Edremit district co-mayor Sevil Rojbin Çetin is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 2 on May 12, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Sevil Rojbin Çetin on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

Sevil Rojbin Çetin joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention of Sevil Rojbin Çetin and adjourned the trial to June 9, 2022.

Sevil Rojbin Çetin was detained on June 26, 2020 in Diyarbakır and was arrested on July 7, 2020.

(05/110) The Case Against the HKP Executive…

The final trial of the case against the People’s Liberation Party (HKP) Deputy Secretary General and provincial chair Tacettin Çolak, on the charge of ‘insulting the President’ is held at İzmir Menemen Penal Court of First Instance No 3 on May 12, 2022. The court sentenced Tacettin Çolak to 3 years, 1 month and 27 days for his social media posts.

(05/111) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Mezopotamya News Agency reporters Sadık Topaloğlu and Sadiye Eser is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 22 on May 12, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for 2 journalists on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The court adjourned the trial to September 8, 2022.

(05/112) Journalist on Trial in Mardin…

The retrial of the case against Çetin Kurşun from Azadiya Welat newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2 on May 12, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to October 6, 2022. The local court has sentenced Çetin Kurşun to 3 years on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ but Antep Regional Court reversed the verdict.

(05/113) People on Trial for Protests Against New Rector Appointment to Boğaziçi University…

The trial of the case against 23 people for the demonstration held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on February 2, 2021 to protest new rector appointment to Boğaziçi University, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 38 on May 12, 2022. After defence hearings the court refused to lift the judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial to September 20, 2022.

2 of the defendants (Anıl Akyüz and Şilan Delipalta) were arrested in February 2021 and were released by the court on April 2, 2021.

(05/114) Ankara Gezi Case…

The trial of the case against 26 people for Gezi protests in Ankara in 2013, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 14 on May 12, 2022.

The prosecutor changed the legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for the defendants on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation’, although the first opinion was for acquittal.

The court adjourned the hearing to June 16, 2022.

(05/115) October 10 – Ankara Massacre Case…

The trial of the case against Erman Ekici and 16 fugitive defendants, for October 10 – Ankara Massacre, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 4 on May 12, 2022.

Erman Ekici, the only arrested defendant of the case joined the trial via sound and vision system. Ulkar Mammadova is heard as a witness. The court adjourned the trial to July 19, 2022.

19 defendants have been sentenced to jail sentences on August 3, 2018, at the final trial of the case on October 10 – Ankara Massacre and the case against 16 fugitives was separated.

(05/116) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 8 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 1,778 as of May 12, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,878 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 15,050,177 as of May 12, 2022.
