(01/199) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1171 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 23, 2020 at 13.30, and at 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on January 23, 2020, 2 people (Mehmet Dersulu and Nazan Bozkurt) and at 18.00 2 people (Mehmet Dersulu and Nazan Bozkurt) were detained.

Thus in total 4 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on January 23, 2020. It is learned detained people were released on the same days they were detained.

(01/200) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

On January 23, 2020 the police intervened the press declaration outside Ankara Courthouse and detained Seyri Sokak Video and Documentary Collective member Eylül Deniz. The press declaration was to demand return of visual archive of Oktay İnce, another member of Seyri Sokak Video and Documentary Collective, which was seized by the police after he was detained and released on October 16, 2018 for his social media posts.

(01/201) Detained People in Istanbul…

Zeynep Koçak and Hasan Koçak, mother and father of Mustafa Koçak who is on death fast in Izmir Şakran T Type Prison for 205 days demanding a fair trial, are detained by the police in Şişli district office of Justice and Development Party (AKP) on January 23, 2020. It is learned that 2 people are released on the same day.

(01/202) Detained People in Ankara…

4 people (Melek Çetinkaya and Ayten Güleşçi, mothers of Air Force Academy students who were sentenced to heavy life imprisonment in “Fethullahist Terrorist Organisation /Parallel State Structure” cases, and Yasin Arıcı and Bünyamin Çiçek, who were dismissed by state of emergency decrees) who were detained in Ankara on January 22, 2020, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on January 23, 2020.

(01/203) Detained City Council Member in Erzurum…

On January 23, 2020, Emel Turan, city council member from People’s Democratic Party (HDP) in Karayazı district of Erzurum who was suspended earlier, is detained in a house raid in Erzurum. It is learned that Emel Turan is taken to Ağrı however the reason of detention is unknown.

(01/204) Detained HDP Members and Executives in Diyarbakır…

13 of 20 people including Diyarbakır city council member Rıdvan Ezer and HDP Party Assembly member Mesut Bağcık, who were detained on January 13, 2020 and following days, are arrested by the court on January 23, 2020. 7 people are released on judicial control conditions.

On January 23, 2020, 8 people (C. E., F. E., S. G., E. U., O. A., S. S., M. O. and R. Ü.) are detained by gendarmerie in Isparta on the grounds of making propaganda for an illegal organisation.

On January 23, 2020, Rahime Sarı who was detained in Nusaybin district of Mardin is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(01/207) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against journalist Hayri Demir on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 15 on January 23, 2020. It is learned that the chief judge interrupted Hayri Demir during defence hearings and said “Do not make political defence, it is not the place for it. Just answer the accusations in the indictment. Otherwise I will stop you and treat as if you have used your right to remain silent”. The court adjourned the trial to April 28, 2020.

(01/208) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against journalist Kenan Kırkaya, on the grounds of making propaganda for an illegal organisation in social media posts, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 32 on January 23, 3030. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 5, 2020.

(01/209) Peace Mother on Trial in Mardin…

The trial of the case against Peace Mother Hevlet Öncü, for a sit-in protest held in Kızıltepe district of Mardin on April 20, 2019 for hunger strikes in prisons, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 4 on January 23, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for Hevlet Öncü on the charge of ‘committing crime on behalf of an illegal organisation’.

It is learned that another investigation was initiated against Hevlet Öncü. The court adjourned the trial to March 26, 2020.

(01/210) HDP Members on Trial in Şırnak…

The first trial of the case against 11 people including HDP Cizre district co-chair Güler Tunç, Cizre co-mayor Mehmet Zırığ who was suspended and replaced by a trustee, and HDP Party Assembly member Zelal Yerlikaya, for protesting trustee appointments to municipalities, is held at Cizre Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on January 23, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for 11 people on the charge of ‘organising, leading and attending to illegal demonstrations’.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to April 9, 2020.

(01/211) Person on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against Esin Kavruk, on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in her social media posts about Turkish Armed Forces operation to north and south Syria, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 36 on January 23, 3030. After defence hearings the court released Esin Kavruk on judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial.

Esin Kavruk was arrested on October 11, 2020. On November 28, 2019, her ward in Bakırköy Women’s Prison was raided by police to forcefully get a DNA sample from her.

3 people (Y. B., A. S. and M. F. A.) who were detained in Izmir are arrested by the court on January 23, 2020.

(01/213) Banned Newspaper Issue…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 23, 2020 that, issue number 49 of “Özgür Gelecek için Yeni Demokrasi” newspaper published on December 12, 2019, is banned by Istanbul Penal Court of Peace Number 9, on the grounds of ‘propaganda of an illegal organisation’.
