It is learned from the news coverage of December 23, 2019 that, 3 HPG militants died in an air operation of Turkish Armed Forces to Xakurke in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on June 6, 2019.

(12/258) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 23, 2019 that Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz, Kızıltepe district co-mayor, is transferred from Mardin E Type Prison to Tarsus T Type Prison under coercion. Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz was suspended after being detained on December 12, 2019, and was arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on December 15, 2019.

(12/259) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1140 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on December 23, 2019 at 13.30, and at 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on December 23, 2019, 3 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Mehmet Dersulu and Acun Karadağ) and at 18.00 2 people (Nazan Bozkurt and Mehmet Dersulu) were detained.

Thus in total 5 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on December 23, 2019. It is learned detained people were released on the same days they were detained.

The police intervened the protestors in front of Çankaya Public Health Directorate on December 23, 2019, who rally to regain their jobs from which they had been dismissed by state of emergency decrees, and detained 2 people (Mahmut Konuk and Eser Budak). It is learned that 2 people were released the same day.

The police intervened the sit-in protest at Bakırköy Square on December 23, 2019 of Nursel Tanrıverdi who rally for 144 weeks to regain her job from which she had been dismissed by state of emergency decree, and detained her by using physical violence.

The police intervened Free Young Women (ÖGK) members’ press declaration about femicide on December 23, 2019 at Taksim Square in Istanbul and detained 2 people (Alev Özkiraz and Yaren Tuncer). It is learned that 2 people are released on the same day.

(12/263) Police Prevention to Press Declaration in Diyarbakır…

The police prevented the press declaration of People’s Democratic Party (HDP) members in front of Diyarbakır Courthouse to protest arrest of Filiz Buluttekin and Cemal Özdemir, co-mayors of Sur district on December 23, 2019. It is learned that the police also prevented the press from recording the declaration.

Filiz Buluttekin and Cemal Özdemir, co-mayors of Sur district of Diyarbakır who were detained on December 20, 2019 are arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on December 23, 2019. It is learned that Yılmaz Eken, district council member who was also detained is released on judicial control conditions on the same day.

It is learned that Leyla Yiğit, a member of HDP, who was visiting her brother Kemal Yiğit at Rize Kalkandere Closed Prison on December 23, 2019, is detained by prison police for reacting against unlawful lawyer limitation for her brother. It is reported that Leyla Yiğit is released on the same day.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 23, 2019 that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation against singer Ferhat Tunç for his social media posts about Turkish Armed Forces operation to north and east Syria.

(12/267) Dargeçit JİTEM Case…

The case against 18 people, for forced disappearance of 8 people including 3 children who were detained in Dargeçit district of Mardin between October 29, 2015 and March 8, 1996; and of special sergeant Bilal Batır, who was alleged to inform families of those disappeared forcefully, is held on Adıyaman Heavy Penal Court No 1 on the charge of ‘intentional killing’ on December 23, 2019. It is learned that Ahmet Kul, district public prosecutor back then who was expected to be heard as witness and other defendants did not join the trial. The court rejected to arrest defendants and adjourned the trial to February 9, 2019.

(12/268) Non-Prosecution Decision on Death of Mehmet Sadık Bozderi During Curfew in Şırnak…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 23, 2019 that İdil District Prosecutor’s Office ruled non-prosecution on death of Mehmet Sadık Bozderi, who died due to fire and missile launched by security units to his house in İdil district of Şırnak on February 23, 2016 during curfew. It is stated in the news reports that Mehmet Sadık Bozderi, who was at the age of 54 and had a heart disease back then, was waiting for an ambulance in his house while security units opened fire. It is reported that the prosecutor’s office names Mehmet Bozderi as “a member of an illegal organisation” and states that his death was “within self-defence and lawful”. It is learned that Şırnak Penal Court of Peace rejected the appeal to non-prosecution decision.

(12/269) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

43 of 67 people including 3 colonels, 3 lieutenant colonels, 10 majors, 22 lieutenants on active duty, who were detained in operations covering 33 cities through an Izmir based investigation on December 20, 2019 are arrested on December 23, 2019; while 20 people are released on judicial control conditions.
