(07/010) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 1, 2020 that 5 militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Haftanin area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on June 16, 2020.

(07/011) Asylum Seekers Died in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 1, 2020 that 6 asylum seekers died in a sinking boat in Van Lake on June 26, 2020; at least 50 asylum seekers are lost.

It is reported that 11 people are detained in relation to the incident and local authority of Altınsaç neighbourhood of Gevaş district is suspended by Ministry of Interior on the grounds of reporting the incident late.

(07/012) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened on the grounds of governorate’s ban, against the press declaration about July 2 – Sivas Massacre, in Tuzluçayır neighbourhood of Mamak district of Ankara on June 1, 2020 and detained 4 people.

Detained people are: Zarife Çamalan, Naci Bayraktar, Mustafa Kaya and Nevroz with unknown surname.

(07/013) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1331 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on July 1, 2020 at 13.30 and 18.00 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(07/014) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Düzce…

On July 1, 2020, the police intervened the press declaration of Alev Şahin in order to regain her job from which she was dismissed by a state of emergency decree, in front of Düzce Governorate and detained her. Alev Şahin was released on the same day.

(07/015) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

The police prevented the press declaration of Marmara Association of Families of Prisoners (MATUHAY-DER) about right violations in prisons, in Fatih district of Istanbul on July 1, 2020.

(07/016) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Izmir…

The police prevented the press declaration about problems of health workers, organized by Health and Social Services Employees’ Union (SES) at Urla Public Hospital on July 1, 2020. The police grounded the prevention on governorate’s ban.

(07/017) Detained Community Houses Member in Antalya…

On July 1, 2020, Ebru İntibay, a member of Community Houses, is detained in a house raid in Antalya. The reason of detention is unknown.

(07/018) Detained People for Social Media Posts…

A person named E. B., one of 11 people who were detained on the grounds of insulting Berat Albayrak, Minister of Treasury and Finance and his family on social media posts, is arrested by the court on July 1, 2020. 4 people (K. Z. U., N. S., F. M. A. and Ö. D.) are released. It is learned that 6 people are still under custody.

(07/019) The Case Against HDP MP and DTK Co-Chair…

The trial of the case against Leyla Güven, DTK co-chair and People’s Democratic Party (HDP) MP who has been stripped of MP status; for her declarations about Turkish Armed Forces operation to Afrin and her activities within DTK, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on July 1, 2020.

The court adjourned the trial to October 28, 2020.

(07/020) AABK Honorary President on Trial…

The final trial of the case against Turgut Öker, honorary president of European Alevi Associations Confederation (AABK), for his speech about giving 3rd bridge of Istanbul the name of Sultan Selim the Stern is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 25 on July 1, 2020. The court sentenced Turgut Öker to a fine of 8.400 Turkish Liras on the charge of ‘insulting a public officer during his duty’.

(07/021) Non-Prosecution Decision for People Died in Mardin in 1993…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 1, 2020 that, Dargeçit Public Prosecutor’s Office decided non-prosecution of the investigation against Dargeçit District Gendarmerie former Commander Ali Tapan, for killing of 7 people in Çelik rural neighbourhood of Dargeçit district of Mardin on July 3, 1993. The investigation has begun on November 1, 2013.

Specially Authorized Prosecutor’s Office of Diyarbakır have stated that the case was a crime against humanity and thus cannot be subjected to statue of time limitations; Dargeçit Prosecutor’s Office now responded this verdict as “It is legally not possible to claim that an act dated before June 1, 2005 as a crime against humanity according to Turkish Criminal Law and to invalidate statue of time limitations”. 

Dargeçit Prosecutor’s Office described the people died in 1993 as PKK militia and labelled statements of their relatives as abstract. It is also stated as a ground of non-prosecution that residents of the village have not make criminal complaints back then.

On July 3, 1993, security forces came to Çelik village and killed Ahmet Kavakçıoğlu, Mehmet Kavakçıoğlu, Alaattin Acar, Fahrettin Acar, Mahmut Erol, Süleyman Erol and Zülfer Akkurt and then burned the village down. Specially Authorized Prosecutor’s Office of Diyarbakır initiated an investigation which was sent to Dargeçit Public Prosecutor’s Office after specially authorized courts and prosecutor’s offices were closed down.

(07/022) Broadcast Ban for TV Channels…

On July 1, 2020, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) issued Tele 1 TV channel with a broadcast ban for 5 days, for expressions about Directorate of Religious Affairs on prime-time newscast on April 30, 2020 and on a programme on May 24, 2020.

On July 1, 2020, RTÜK issued Tele 1 TV channel with administrative fine at top level, for expressions of Merdan Yanardağ, host of “18 Minutes” programme, about Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II. 

On July 1, 2020, RTÜK issued Halk TV channel with a broadcast ban for 5 days, for expressions of journalist Hüsnü Mahalli on a programme on June 16, 2020.

(07/023) Ban of Events in Izmir…

Izmir Governorate banned all meetings, demonstrations and such events in health institutions according to Provincial Public Health and Sanitation Board on July 1, 2020.

(07/024) Special Security Zone in Tunceli…

Tunceli Governorate made a declaration on July 1, 2020 and declared 29 areas with given coordinates in central, Ovacık, Pülümür, Hozat and Nazımiye districts as special security zones between July 1 and July 15, 2020.

(07/025) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against 5 people including Mustafa Rüştü Çelenk, Bandırma Main Jet Base No 6 Commander Brigadier General, is held at Balıkesir Heavy Penal Court No 2 on July 1, 2020. The court sentenced Mustafa Rüştü Çelenk to life imprisonment for ‘attempting to demolish the constitutional order’. The court sentenced 1 defendant to 12 years and 6 months on the same charge; and 2 defendants to 6 years and 3 months each for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court acquitted 1 person.

(07/026) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 19 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,192 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on July 1, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 5,150 and total number of confirmed cases is 201,098 as of July 1, 2020.
