(10/093) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1064 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on October 8, 2019 at 13.30, and at 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on October 8, 2019, 2 people (Mahmut Konuk and Acun Karadağ) and at 18.00 2 people (Engin Karataş and Nazan Bozkurt) were detained.

Thus in total 4 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on October 8, 2019. It is learned detained people were released on the same days they were detained.

(10/094) Prevention of Peace Mothers in Adana…

It is learned that Peace Mothers from Diyarbakır, Şırnak, Urfa, Antep and Adana going to People’s Democratic Party (HDP) group meeting in Ankara were stopped by the police at the entrance of Adana İncirlik Bus Terminal. It is reported that the police did not allow the bus to move on, on the grounds of lacking documents and carried on body search and general information check for passengers. It is learned that passengers were sent back to their cities with a different bus, after waiting for 5 hours at the terminal.

(10/095) Detained People in Şırnak…

8 of 14 people including city council member Gurbet Güleş who were detained in house raids in Şırnak on October 5, 2019 are released on October 8, 2019.

(10/096) Detained Person in Antalya…

Arlet Natali Avazyan is detained in Antalya on October 8, 2019, for her social media posts upon complaint of Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and his family. It is learned that Avazyan is released on judicial control conditions on October 9, 2019.

(10/097) The Case Against People Evacuated from Sur…

The case against 40 people including 19 arrestees who were evacuated from the buildings they were stuck in during the curfew in Sur district of Diyarbakır during February and March, 2016, is held October 8, 2019 on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5.

It is learned that arrested defendants were taken out of the court room by gendarmerie after defence declarations were interrupted by the court board and that they were subjected to physical violence of the gendarmerie. It is reported that families of defendants were also taken out of the court room by the police using violence against them. It is learned that 2 of them (Halim Aslan and Mehmet Şirin Gökdere) were detained.

The court decided to continue detention of arrested people and adjourned the trial to February 20, 2020.

(10/098) Gezi Case…

The trial of the case against Osman Kavala, Yiğit Aksakoğlu, Ali Hakan Altınay, Ayşe Mücella Yapıcı, Ayşe Pınar Alabora, Can Dündar, Çiğdem Mater Utku, Gökçe Yılmaz, Handan Meltem Arıkan, Hanzade Hikmet Germiyanoğlu, İnanç Ekmekçi, Mehmet Ali Alabora, Mine Özerden, Şerafettin Can Atalay, Tayfun Kahraman and Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi, for Gezi Park protests in 2013, is held on October 8, 2019.

The indictment demands heavy life imprisonment for 16 people on the charge of ‘attempting to abolish the government of the Republic of Turkey or to prevent it from fulfilling its duties’. The indictment also demands sentence for defendants on the charges of ‘qualified damage to property’, ‘possession or exchange of hazardous substances without permission’, ‘damaging places of worship and cemeteries’, ‘qualified robbery’, ‘injury’, ‘opposition to Law on the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Property No 2863’, and ‘opposition to Law for the Firearms and Knives and Other Tools No 6136’.

It is learned that the chief judge banned sketching in the court room and ruled to take sketch artist Tarık Tolunay out of the courtroom.

After defence hearings the court decided continue detention of business person Osman Kavala and adjourned the trial to December 24 and 25, 2019.

Business person Osman Kavala was arrested on November 1, 2017.

(10/099) Former HDP Co-Chair on Trial…

The final trial of the case against Figen Yüksekdağ, former co-chair of HDP, on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 9, on the charge of ‘insulting Turkish nation, state of the Republic of Turkey, state institutions and organs’ in her testimony after being detained on November 4, 2016, is held on October 8, 2019. The court acquitted Figen Yüksekdağ.

(10/100) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The retrial of journalists and writers Ahmet Altan, Nazlı Ilıcak and Ahmet Altan and Şükrü Tuğrul Özşengül, Fevzi Yazıcı and Yakup Şimşek is held on October 8, 2019 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26. On July 5, 2019, Penal Department No 16 of the Supreme Court has reversed the heavy life imprisonment sentences which was given to journalists Ahmet Altan, Mehmet Altan, Nazlı Ilıcak and Şükrü Tuğrul Özşengül, Fevzi Yazıcı and Yakup Şimşek on the charge of ‘violating the Constitution’, by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26 and was approved by Penal Department No 2 of Istanbul Regional Court.

The court decided to continue detention of 6 arrestees and to lift ban to leave the country for Mehmet Altan and adjourned the trial to November 4, 2019.

(10/101) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On October 8, 2019, 14 people are detained in operations covering 21 cities through an Ankara based investigation and 36 people are detained in operations covering 10 cities through an Izmir based investigation.

(10/102) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against 2 people (Mustafa Seyidoğlu and Serdar Seyidoğlu) on the charges of ‘attempt to demolish the constitutional order’ and ‘being an illegal organisation member’ is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 on October 8, 2019. The court acquitted 2 people.

The final trial of the case against 25 people including 1 arrestee is held at Kahramanmaraş Heavy Penal Court No 2 on October 8, 2019. The court sentenced Ferhat Karaderi, Elbistan district Gendarmerie Commander back then, to life imprisonment for ‘attempt to demolish the constitutional order’. The court sentenced 3 people to 7 years and 6 months each and 3 people to 2 years and 6 months each for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court acquitted 18 people.
