(05/070) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 9, 2020 that 1 militant died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of Tunceli on May 6, 2020.

(05/071) Police Intervention to Funeral of İbrahim Gökçek…

26 people including 2 children who were detained in the police intervention against the funeral of Grup Yorum member İbrahim Gökçek who lost his life on May 7, 2020, at Gazi Cemevi in Sultangazi district of Istanbul on May 8, 2020; are released on the same day after statement procedures at Sultangazi Police Station. 26 people were imposed a fine of 1000 Turkish Liras for “violating social distancing rule”. İbrahim Gökçek, who was on death fast for 323 days to demand an end to oppression and bans on Grup Yorum, and who ended his fast on May 5, 2020, died in hospital on May 7, 2020.

It is learned that 1 person who wanted to hold a banner during funeral of İbrahim Gökçek at Halef Hoca cemetery in Talas district of Kayseri on May 9, 2020, was subjected to physical violence of the police. Grup Yorum member Bahar Kurt who was to have a speech was prevented by the police using physical violence. The police used physical violence to force people who wanted to sing a song of Grup Yorum at İbrahim Gökçek’s graveyard, out of the cemetery.

The police prevented a racist group to attack İbrahim Gökçek’s graveyard at Halef Cemetery at night on May 10, 2020. It is learned that the group left the cemetery after saying to the police following: “The police will not be able to watch this place for years. One day they will leave waiting for sure. When the police leave we will take him out and burn him down here”.

It is learned that a 4-day detention warrant is issued for 18 people including lawyers who were detained at the police raid to Gazi Cemevi in Sultangazi district of Istanbul where İbrahim Gökçek’s funeral was kept for ceremony on May 8, 2020.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2020 that Grey wolves Kayseri chair Serdar Turan who made threatening declarations and shared social media posts about İbrahim Gökçek’s funeral taken to Kayseri, is discharged from his position.

(05/072) Torture and Il-Treatment Under Custody in Istanbul…

It is learned that 18 people including lawyers who were detained at the police raid to Gazi Cemevi in Sultangazi district of Istanbul where İbrahim Gökçek’s funeral was kept for ceremony on May 8, 2020; were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during detention and at Istanbul Security Directorate. It is reported that 18 people started a hunger strike under custody and water and sugar brought for them by lawyers were not allowed in by the police.

Lawyer Yaprak Türkmen stated the following on torture and ill-treatment to detained people: “Detained colleagues and clients were subjected to serious torture. They were systematically subjected to torture from the first time they were detained, in the detention car, at the yard and car park of security directorate, during body search, and after lawyer visit. When we went there we saw bruises and scratches from torture on their bodies. One of our client was tried to be stroked with a material. She could not speak and she had a cough because of this.”

People’s Law Office declared that Cemil Kurut had swelling on eyes, Rıdvan Akbaş and Hasan Karapınar were injured at their heads, Beyhan Gün has bruises and swelling at throat, Bahar Ertürk was tried to be stroked, Tuğçe Tayyar and Elif Tayyar have bruises and scratches on their bodies.

(05/073) Woman Was Subjected to Police Violence in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2020 that, a woman who was detained during police intervention to İbrahim Gökçek’s funeral in Gazi neighbourhood of Sultangazi district of Istanbul was injured at face due to torture and ill-treatment.

(05/074) Child Was Subjected to Police Violence in Mardin…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 9, 2020, the police fired up into the air to intervene children who were playing outside during curfew in Nusaybin district of Mardin on April 24, 2020. It is learned that the police used physical and verbal violence against a 7 years old child (B. E.) who is reported as mentally challenged.

Nusaybin Sub-Governorate made a declaration on May 9, 2020, after media coverage of recordings showing police violence, and announced that the police officer in charge was suspended. The declaration states the following: “A group threw stones to the police squad on patrol in Fırat neighbourhood of Nusaybin district. The police officer on duty went off the car and fired his gun into the air in order to remove the group; however, he fired his gun in a place where children were around which is unacceptable and improper. Considering his unlawful act and attitude, and that he did not inform his chiefs; the police officer is discharged from his position and the investigation against him is still in process.”

Security General Directorate made a declaration on May 9, 2020 and stated the following: “An investigation is initiated against the police officer who fired a gun into the air to intervene the children throwing stones in a site yard in Nusaybin district of Mardin on 24.04.2020, and who did not inform the case to his chiefs; and the police officer is discharged from his position.”

(05/075) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is claimed in the news coverage of May 9, 2020 that, the money sent two months ago via PTT to a prisoner in Van T Type Prison from his family was still not transferred to his account.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2020 that, 6 prisoners who are on an indefinite hunger strike since May 6, 2020 to protest right violations in Konya Seydişehir T Type Prison, were threatened by wardens saying “We will keep teasing you. This is Seydişehir. Nobody can reach you. Keep silent”; and that 2 prisoners on hunger strike (Şiyar Fırat and Önder Korkmaz) were taken out of their ward and were put in solitary cells.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2020 that wards in Elazığ High Security Prison No 2 were disinfected only once and prisoners were given face masks only once, despite of Covid-19 pandemic.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2020 that food given to prisoners in Elazığ High Security Prison No 1 was reduced, products at commissary were sold at high prices and packages sent to prisoners from outside were not given to them.

(05/076) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2020 that, 2 prisoners in Antalya L Type Prison who were taken to hospital, were taken back to prison without being treated because they rejected to be medically examined in handcuffs.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2020 that, in Bolu F Type Prison, demands of prisoners to see dentist and to go to infirmary were rejected on the grounds of Covid-19 pandemic.

(05/077) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1279 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 8, 2020 at 13.30 and at 18.00, and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

On May 9, 2020, 1 person (Nazan Bozkurt) having a press declaration in Mamak district of Ankara, because of Covid-19 curfew, is detained by the police using physical violence. It is learned that Nazan Bozkurt was subjected to torture and ill-treatment under custody and in hospital where she was taken. It is reported that Nazan Bozkurt has bruises and swellings on her arms due to torture and ill-treatment. Nazan Bozkurt was referred to the court on the charges of ‘resisting the police’ and ‘insult’ and was released with a ban on leaving the country. It is learned that Nazan Bozkurt’s phone and the banner coat she wears during declaration, were seized by the police.

(05/078) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration for architect Alev Şahin, who was dismissed from her job by a state of emergency decree, in front of Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning building in Ankara on May 8 2020; and forced 1 person (Nazan Bozkurt) way from the building.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 9, 2020 that, 4 people who are on life watch against gold mining project at Mount Kaz in Çanakkale, were imposed a fine of 57,240 Turkish Liras according to the Law of Misdemeanour for 4 days.

(05/080) Criminal Complaint Against CHP MP’s…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2020 that Communications Director Republic of Turkey Fahrettin Altun, filed a criminal complaint against Republican People’s Party (CHP) Manisa MP and group deputy chair Özgür Özel and Sakarya MP Engin Özkoç, on the charges of ‘insult’ and ‘slander’.

(05/081) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 10, 2020 that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation on the charge of ‘provoking hatred and hostility among public’, against journalist Can Ataklı, for his expressions on a TV programme on March 23, 2020.

The indictment demands jail sentence for Can Ataklı from 9 months to 1 year and 6 months.

(05/082) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 48 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,848 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on May 8, 2020.

Ministry of Health declared that 50 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,546 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on May 9, 2020.

Ministry of Health declared that 47 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,542 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on May 9, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 3,786 and total number of confirmed cases is 138,657 as of May 10, 2020.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 8, 2020 that 6 wardens in Mardin E Type Prison were tested positive for Covid-19 and they were quarantined.
