It is learned from the news coverage of February 6, 2020 that, 3 more people died due to avalanche that hit Van-Bahçesaray roadway on February 5, 2020, making the death toll reach to 41.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 6, 2020 that, 1 militant died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of Bitlis on June 14, 2019.

(02/063) Police Intervention to a Protest in Diyarbakır…

The press declaration of right defender organisations including Human Rights Association (IHD) and HRFT, in front of Diyarbakır Courthouse on February 6, 2020, after the first trial against police officer A. E. for death of Helin Hasret Şen, is prevented by the police on the grounds of governorate’s ban.

(02/064) Detained Human Rights Defender in Istanbul…

Human Rights Association Istanbul branch chair lawyer Gülseren Yoleri is detained at her home by two undercover police officers on February 6, 2020. It is learned that reason of detention is the speech Gülseren Yoleri made on October 12, 2019, at the 759th week of Saturday Mothers’ gathering at Galatasaray Square. Gülseren Yoleri is released after statement procedures at Sarıyer Police Station.

Writer Fuad Önen, who was detained in Istanbul on February 5, 2020 on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ in his social media posts on military operation of Turkish Armed Forces to north and south Syria and Roboski massacre, is released by the court n judicial control conditions on February 6, 2020.

(02/066) Detained Newspaper Distributor, Member of an Association and HDP Member in Van…

On February 6, 2020, Ferdi Sertkal, distributor of Yeni Yaşam newspaper; Mehmet Soner Bilir, member of Yüzüncü Yıl Science Anthropology Art and Culture Association (BASK-DER) and Ferhat Kalkan, People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Youth Assembly member, are detained in house raids in Van. The reason of detention is unknown.

(02/067) Özgür Gündem Case…

The trial of the case against Hüseyin Aykol and Zana Kaya, executive editors and İnan Kızılkaya, editor in chief of Özgür Gündem newspaper and politician Hatip Dicle, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 22 on February 6, 2020. The court decided to prolong the detention warrant for Hatip Dicle and adjourned the trial to June 2, 2020.

(02/068) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against 6 journalists (Ömer Çelik, news director and Metin Yoksu, reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree; Tunca Öğreten, former editor of Diken news portal; Mahir Kanaat, Birgün newspaper employee; Eray Sargın, editor in chief of Yolculuk newspaper; Derya Okatan, Etkin News Agency news director) on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 29 is held on February 6, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for 6 journalists on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’, ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ and ‘blocking and breaking the information system, changing or destroying the data’, for reporting on the e-mails of Berat Albayrak, Minister of Energy and Natural Sources which were hacked by Redhack and then published on the internet.

The court lifted ban on leaving the country for Derya Okatan and Eray Sargın but rejected to lift judicial control conditions on other 4 journalists and adjourned the trial to June 25, 2020.

3 of 6 journalists who were detained on December 25, 2016, were arrested by the court on January 17, 2017. Ömer Çelik was released on October 24, 2017; Tunca Öğreten and Mahir Kanaat were released on December 6, 2017.

(02/069) Helin Hasret Şen Case…

The first trial of the case against police officer A. E., for death of 12 years old Helin Hasret Şen, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 1 on February 6, 2020. Helin Hasret Şen died due to fire opened from an armoured police vehicle on October 12, 2015, during curfew in Sur district of Diyarbakır.

The indictment demands sentence for A. E. on the charge of ‘reckless killing’.

Helin Hasret Şen’s mother stated the following: “It happened around 8 a.m. on October 12, 2015. We went to greengrocer first, and then to bakery. There was an armoured vehicle behind us. Fire was opened from the vehicle 3 times. (…) When I looked around I saw my daughter on the ground. When I tried to get her, fire was opened again. A neighbour threw her white muslin on the ground and attempted to get my daughter’s body.  A continuous firing was around us at that moment. (…) The ambulance arrived late although we kept calling. The ambulance came and took my daughter. (…) There were around 20 police officers at the place where my daughter was killed. There was no conflict going on that day.”

Diyarbakır Bar Association chair Cihan Aydın stated the following: “This is a threat to right to live and this is a murder. We are here with the responsibility of legal profession act. We demand intervention to the case in accordance with Article 38 of The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)” and demanded arrest of the defendant police officer.

Jiyan Aydın, lawyer of defendant police officer who is appointed as required by Code of Criminal Procedure, stated that he is a member of Diyarbakır Bar Association Centre of Children’s Rights, and demanded withdrawal from advocacy of the defendant.

The court rejected intervention demands of Human Rights Association, HRFT, Lawyers for Freedom (ÖDH) Diyarbakır branch, Diyarbakır Bar Association Centre of Children’s Rights, Roza Women Association; rejected Jiyan Aydın’s demand of withdrawal and arrest of defendant police officer A. E. and adjourned the trial to March 3, 2020.
