(07/103) Person Killed by the Police in Samsun…

It is learned that a quarrel on car parking arose between police officer Adem Y. and 2 civilians, Rasim Sabah (34) and Fatih Çepniler (36), and that police officer Adem Y. started random shot, in İlkadım district of Samsun on July 9, 2018. It is reported that Rasim Sabah and Fatih Çepniler were severely wounded due to gunshot and Rasim Sabah died in hospital. Adem Y. is arrested by the court on July 10, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of July 10, 2018 that 9 militants died in a clash between HPG militants and security forces in Besta region of Şırnak on June 11, 2018.

(07/105) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from news coverage of July 10, 2018 that, Aysel Kaya, a prisoner from Antep L Type Prison was forced out from the ward she stays on the grounds that she was given solitary confinement, and prisoners in the ward were subjected to physical violence when they reacted against this. It is reported that an ill prisoner was also subjected to physical violence and wardens continued to commit physical violence against prisoners in the prison infirmary as well.

It is learned from news coverage of July 10, 2018 that prisoners in Elazığ High Security Prison No 2 who reject to carry ID cards, were prevented from right to health, and visit, phone call and sportive activity rights for 10 months. It is also reported that prisoners were being punished by preventing visit and communication rights upon disciplinary proceedings for not carrying ID cards.

(07/106) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on July 10, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on July 10, 2018, 3 people (Erdoğan Canpolat, Mahmut Konuk and İlker Işık) and at 18.00 3 people (Acun Karadağ, Erdoğan Canpolat and İlker Işık) were detained.

Thus in total 6 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on July 10, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(07/107) Person Arrested After Being Discharged from Hospital Without Being Completely Treated…

It is learned from news coverage of July 10, 2018 that İbrahim Koçer, who was sentenced to 4 years and 7 months for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, was discharged from hospital without being completely treated after a car crash he was involved; and was arrested by the court and sent to prison. İbrahim Koçer had a traffic accident in Çorlu on March 15, 2018 and has been in medically induced coma for 49 days and had 8 surgeries in total. It is claimed in the news report that the prosecutor’s office and the police pressurized the hospital administration and physicians to speed up the treatment process.

It is reported that, İbrahim Koçer’s family will make an official complaint against the physicians who are responsible for discharging him before complete recovery.

(07/108) Academician for Peace Arrested for Social Media Posts in Istanbul…

It is learned from news coverage of July 10, 2018 that Hanifi Barış, one of the signatories of the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”, was referred to the court from the police station on July 4, 2018, where he has been to testify for an investigation against him for his social media posts, and was arrested by the court for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

(07/109) METU Students Detained for ‘Insulting the President’…

4 students of Middle East Technical University students who has been detained for carrying a banner containing “The Kingdom of Tayyips” cartoon at graduation ceremony on July 6, 2018, are arrested by the court on July 10, 2018. An employee of the publishing house where the banner was prepared has also been detained with students, and it is learned that this person is released.

(07/110) Detained Journalist in Elazığ…

Journalist Şerife Oruç, who was detained after being released from Elazığ T Type Prison, based on a warrant issued for her, is released on July 10, 2018.

(07/111) Actor Detained in Istanbul…

Actor Orhan Aydın, who was detained based on 2 complaints about his social media posts, in Istanbul on July 10, 2018, is released the same day after statement procedures at the police.

(07/112) DBP Members Detained in Elazığ…

4 of 6 people including Abdulkadir Gül, Elazığ provincial council member for DBP (Democratic Regions Party), who were detained in house raids in villages of Elazığ’s Karakoçan district on July 9, 2018, are arrested by the court on July 10, 2018. The names of arrested people are: Abdülkadir Gül, Hacı Yavuz, Murat Ercan and a person named Baki.

 

(07/113) Arrested HDP Members in Cizre…

7 of 30 people who were detained in Cizre district of Şırnak on July 5, 2018 are arrested by the court for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on July 10, 2018. 9 people are released. The names of arrested people known so far are Kasım Yiğit, Şahin Budak.

The number of arrestees raised up to 11 with the last arrests. On July 8, 2018 4 people were arrested by the court through the same investigation. The names of these 4 people were: Ramazan Çağırga (father of 10 years-old Cemile Çağırga, who was killed by a shot during curfew declared on September 4, 2015), Veysi Durgut (HDP’s MP candidate for Manisa for elections on June 24, 2018) and Osman Erkul.

(07/114) HDP Members Detained in Izmir…

It is learned that 16 people including 2 of HDP Izmir provincial executive board members are detained in house raids in Izmir on July 10, 2018. The names of detained people known so far: Gül Turgal (provincial executive), Mahsun Koç (provincial executive), Ferit Turgal, Mehmet Sadık Varkan, Gökhan Varkan, Hatip Adal, Mehmet Hayri Kangin, Malzum Acat, Osman Aydın, Sabri Adıbelli, Aziz Kızıl, Ali Bakır.

On July 10, 2018, 11 people are detained in house raids in Van, for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation on social media’.

(07/116) People Detained for Social Media Posts in Hatay…

2 people, İrfan B. and Resul E., who were detained for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation on social media’ in Iskenderun district of Hatay, are arrested on July 10, 2018.

(07/117) People Evacuated from Nusaybin on Trial…

The case against 53 people who were detained and then arrested during the curfew on Nusaybin district, on Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 4 is held on July 9 and 10, 2018.

It is reported that the defendants, who were not brought to the court room, rejected to testify via sound and vision system.

Osman Bozkurt, demanded to be transferred to another prison in Mardin or Diyarbakır, from Bandırma Prison where he is kept; and stated that he would not testify unless he is transferred. Other defendants stated that, they would not testify unless health issues of defendants are treated.

After defence hearings the court decided to examine the footage of detentions at the request of lawyers, to accept the demands of prisoners who reject to testify via sound and vision system and demand to be brought to the court room, to reject demand of release for arrested defendants, and adjourned the trial to October 15, 2018.

(07 /118) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The separate cases against 2 academicians (dismissed Research Assistant Fırat Çapan form Marmara University and lecturer Meriç Taylan Mutlu from Maltepe University) for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 34 for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ is held on July 10, 2018. After declarations the court adjourned 2 trials to January 29, 2019.

(07/119) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against Canan Coşkun, reporter of Cumhuriyet newspaper, for the news reports “14 lawyers of Nuriye and Semih are arrested”, on detention and arrest of lawyers from People’s Law Office on September 20, 2017, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26 is held on July 10, 2018. The prosecutor declared the legal opinion on the case and demanded jail sentence up to 3 years to Canan Coşkun for ‘targeting people assigned for anti-terror tasks’. The court adjourned the trial to July 19, 2018.

(07/120) Co-Mayor on Trial…

The case against DBP (Democratic Regions Party) member Sadiye Süer Baran, co-mayor of Diyarbakır’s Kulp district, for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 is held on July 10, 2018.

It is reported that, the court board has interrupted Sadiye Süer Baran and said “We cannot do anything about the prison, it is not in  our discretion”, while she declared the violations of rights she was subjected to in prison.

After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention for Sadiye Süer Baran and adjourned the trial to October 2018.

(07/121) Peace Mother on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The case against 9 people, including Dilşah Özgen (81) a member of Peace Mothers Assembly, on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 started on July 10, 2018.

The indictment demands Dilşah Özgen to be sentenced for the containers for prayers and ablution, she donated to the cemetery in Yolaçtı village of Diyarbakır’s Lice district, where her son’s grave is. The containers donated by Dilşah Özgen were destroyed, and the graves were damaged by security forces in an operation in 2016.

After identification, indictment declaration and defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to December 13, 2018.

The case against Beyza Metin, former chair of The Chamber of Electrical Engineers Istanbul Branch, Erdoğan Demir, Gürsel Kaya, Mehmet Şamil Altan, Nebile Irmak Çetin and Önder Atay, for a press declaration in front of Istanbul Sirkeci Terminal on October 13, 2015, to protest October 10, Ankara Terminal massacre, on Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 15 is held on June 5, 2018. After defence hearings the court sentenced the trial to September 6, 2018.

On July 10, 2018, 8 people in operations covering 5 cities through an Aksaray based investigation; 7 people in Edirne allegedly attempting to flee to Greece in illegal ways are detained.

The final trial of the case against a person named H. Y. on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 16 is held on July 10, 2018. The court sentenced the defendant who benefits from effective remorse law, to 6 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.
