(08/062) Alleged Torture Under Custody in Batman…
It is learned from news coverage of August 7, 2018 that, 4 people (H. A., B. A., B. K., and H. A.) who has been detained after a conflict between two families in Kozluk district of Batman in July, were subjected to physical violence, insults and threats of the police at Kozluk Police Headquarters where they were taken under custody. It is stated in the news reports that the medical reports compiled in Kozluk Public Hospital for these 4 people, were inadequate to evidence torture and ill treatment.
It is reported that lawyers made an official complaint to Batman Public Prosecutor’s Office for torture claims.
(08/063) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…
The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on August 7, 2018 at 13.30. It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on August 7, 2018, 3 people (Gülnaz Bozkurt, Mahmut Konuk and Deniz Yılmaz) were detained. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

Ruken Demir, reporter of Mezopotamya News Agency, is detained in Diyarbakır on August 7, 2018. It is learned from news coverage that Ruken Demir’s house in Izmir was raided by the police, and Ruken Demir’s computer and some books in the house were seized.

On August 7, 2018, 3 people (Zeynep Tağtekin, A. D. [17, e], and 1 more person) in house raids in Ceylanpınar district of Urfa; 5 people in house raids in Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak; and at least 4 people (Salih Aydın, Ferdi Kadan, Vahit Sayan, Mehmet Şerif Salman) in house raids in Izmir are detained.
(08/066) Master Sergeant on Trial for Death of Soldier Gökhan Kılıç…
Gökhan Kılıç, who was on compulsory military service in Military Veterinary Medicine School in Gemlik district of Bursa, had a cerebral haemorrhage due to being hit by a helmet several times at his head, and has died in hospital on November 29, 2017.
The case against master sergeant Osman Hancı, for causing death of Gökhan Kılıç by hitting at his head by helmet, on Bursa Heavy Penal Court No 1, is held on August 7, 2018. The indictment demands Osman Hancı to be sentenced up to 10 years for ‘causing death as a result of ill treatment’. The report of Forensic Medicine Institute is declared at the trial. It is learned that the report states that cerebral haemorrhage could be due to being hit by a helmet at the head.
After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention for Osman Hancı and adjourned the trial to October 2018.
(08/067) Journalist on Trial in Şırnak…
The case against 19 people including 9 arrestees with Ziya Ataman, reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by the state of emergency decree, on Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 1 is held on August 7, 2018. Lawyers stated that, witness Kadir Ataman gave his statement under torture and a he was forced to sign a ready-prepared statement. The prosecutor, as a response to lawyers’ question, stated that there was no prosecution initiated about torture.
After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention for 9 people and adjourned the trial to October 26, 2018.
(08/068) Journalist on Trial in Iğdır…
The case against Berzan Güneş, reporter of Mezopotamya News Agency, on the charges of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ on social media posts, on Iğdır Heavy Penal Court, started on August 7, 2018. Berzan Güneş attended the trial via sound and vision system from Şırnak T Type Closed Prison. After defence hearings the court released Berzan Güneş on juridical control conditions and with a ban on leaving the country, and adjourned the trial to September 4, 2018.
Journalist Berzan Güneş has been detained in Şırnak where he was for a news report, and has been arrested on June 11, 2018.

The case against Bekir Kaya, Van metropolitan municipality co-mayor; and municipality employees Cuma Köylüoğlu, Çetin Çiftçi, Zelal Tanlı, Mehmet Halim Eryiğit, Can Tayan, and İdris Şaybak and Neriman Uyar, executives of MEYA-DER (Mesopotamia Fraternity and Solidarity Association of Missing People’s Families), on Van Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on August 7, 2018. Bekir Kaya attended the trial via sound and vision system from Silivri Prison. After defence hearings the court decided to continue detention for Bekir Kaya and adjourned the trial to September 21, 2018.

The case against Bişeng Mete, Silopi district co-chair of Democratic Regions Party (DBP) on Cizre Heavy Penal Court No 2, is held on August 7, 2018. After defence hearings the court released Bişeng Mete and adjourned the trial.
(08/071) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…
On August 7, 2018, 17 executives and teachers including İdris Yurteri, the owner of Private Akıllı Schools, are detained through an Ankara based investigation in which a detention warrant is issued for 37 people. It is learned that 12 schools were searched through the investigation.
On August 7, 2018 3 people are detained in Zonguldak.
(08/072) Special Security Zone…
Hatay Governorate made a declaration on August 7, 2018 and announced special security zone in 39 areas for 15 days as of 08.00, August 8, 2018 to 08.00, August 22, 2018. Thus, except for local people settled in special security areas, video recording, interviewing and broadcasting by press members and entrance of people and vehicles unless permitted by security forces, is banned.
