(06/001) Villagers Subjected to Torture by Military Members in Hakkari…

It is learned from news coverage of May 31, 2018 that a group of military members from Şemdinli Durak Military Station tormented 2 shepherds named Nasır Taş and Ramazan Aktaş, who took the sheeps to Binhane hamlet of Yufkalı village in Şemdinli district of Hakkari. It is reported that Nasır Taş and Ramazan Aktaş were found unonsicous and were taken to the hospital. It is stated in the news that Nasır Taş has a fracture on cheek, and several bruises and swellings on several parts of his body. It is also stated that Ramazan Aktaş, who take a medical report that evidences the remarks of physical violence was released from the hospital, whereas Nasır Taş was still kept in hospital. In the news report, Müslüm Taş, Nasır Taş’s nephews states as following: “A group of 6 or 7 specialist sergeats (from Durak Military Station in Şemdinli), go up to my uncle and his friend (…) and ask questions such as ‘Where are PKK members, have you seen them, who helps them?’. My uncle and the other shepherd tell that they have no information, and the sergeants start beating them. They beat them with my uncle’s baton, with rifle butts, kicks and slaps for a long time (…) Then they take my uncle to the river bank and put his head into water. They threaten him with killing. They tell him they would kill him. After almost two hours of torture they leave my uncle in a wooded corner and go. They beat the other shepherd the same way.”

(06/002) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned that 3 soldiers died in a clash during the operation of Turkish Armed Forces in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on May 31, 2018.

It is learned that 1 village guard died in a clash in rural areas of Hani district of Diyarbakır on May 31, 2018.

(06/003) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from news coverage of May 31, 2018 that 13 prisoners in Tarsus Women’s Prison, who protested the coercion for strip search, were kept in cells for 3 days, although there was no punishment officially given, and no water was given to them for 3 days as well.

It is stated in the same news report that, in Tarsus Women’s Prison, 18 prisoners are kept in wards for 9, prisoners who reject the strip search were subjected to physical violence, prisoners were forced to be in military order during roll-calls, books were limited to 7 for prisoners male wardens participate in ward searches, transfers to infirmary and hospital retarded, and prisoners were forced to be in handcuffs during medical examinations.

(06/004) Rejection to Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan…

It is learned that the appeal made on May 31, 2018 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was rejected the same day on the grounds of limitations for prisoners in accordance with the law on the execution of sentences and security measures (law no 5275). With the last rejection, it was the 760th time that appeals for visiting Öcalan have been rejected so far. Abdullah Öcalan has met his lawyers on July 27, 2011 for the last time.

(06/005) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 31, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on May 31, 2018, 3 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Gülnaz Bozkurt ve Eser Budak) and at 18.00 2 people (Gülnaz Bozkurt and Nazan Bozkurt) were detained.

Thus in total 5 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on May 31, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(06/006) Journalist Arrested in Kocaeli…

It is learned that Doğan Baran, the executive editor of Odak Magazine, who was detained in İzmir based on the news reports in the magazine, is arrested by the court on May 31, 2018.

(06/007) June 5 Diyarbakır Case…

The case about the bombing attack to the meeting of HDP in Diyarbakır on June 5, 2015, on Ankara West Courthouse Heavy Penal Court No 2, continued on May 31, 2018. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to July 17, 2018.

(06/008) Journalists on Trial…

The final trial of the case against 20 people including journalist Çağdaş Kaplan, on Sakarya heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on May 31, 2018. The court sentenced 20 defendants each to 6 years and 3 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

Çağdaş Kaplan, who was a reporter of Dicle News Agency (DİHA) then, was reporting on discriminations and racist attacks to Kurdish students in Sakarya on 2010, and was detained in a police raid to the students’ houses.

(06/009) Halkevleri Members on Trial for Supporting Turkish Medical Association in Eskişehir…

The case against 5 members of Halkevleri, including Halkevleri executive board member lawyer Fatma Girgin, for distributing the “War is a public health problem” leaflet of Turkish Medical Association on Doktorlar Street, on Eskişehir Heavy Penal Court No 4, started on May 31, 2018. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to June 27, 2018.

(06/010) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On May 31, 2018, 14 people through an investigation against Ministry of Health employees in Ankara, 11 people in operations covering 9 cities through a Kırşehir based investigation, 6 military members in operations covering 6 cities through a Sinop based investigation, 11 people in Eskişehir, 1 major commander (with a detention warrant) and his spouse in Hakkari are detained.

(06/011) Person on Trial for Wearing a “Hero” T-Shirt…

The final trial of the case against university student Emirhan Baysal for ‘making propaganda of an illegal organisation’ because he attempted to enter the courtroom in Sincan Penal Institution Compound, wearing a ‘Hero’ printed t-shirt, on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 15 is held on May 31, 2018. The court acquitted Emirhan Baysal.

After Gökhan Güçlü, who was a defendant in a case on July 15 coup attempt, attended a trial with a t-shirt printed ‘Hero: Heroes are immortal’, at least 38 people were arrested for wearing ‘Hero’ t-shirts in Turkey.

(06/012) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against 31 defendants including 7 arrestees, all from combat search and rescue team and Konya Main Jet Base Command No 3, on Konya Heavy Penal Court No 6 is held on May 31, 2018. The court sentenced 16 defendants to jail penalties differing from 6 years 10 monhts and 15 days to 19 years 4 months and 15 days for ‘being an illegal organisation’ and ‘aiding the coup attempt’. The court acquitted 15 defendants.

The final trial of the case against 90 former military members including 12 arrestees, for trying to occupy Istanbul Governorate building during July 15 coup attempt, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 is held on May 31, 2018. The court sentenced 8 defendants to heavy life penalty for ‘violating the Constitution’. The court acquitted 80 defendants and separated the cases of 2 defendants.

The final trial of the case against 51 defendands including 29 arrestees on Aydın Heavy Penal Court No 3 is held on May 31, 2018. The court sentenced 51 defendants to jail penalties differing from 1 year 6 months and 22 days to 18 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘leading an illegal organisation member’.

The final trials of the separate cases against 9 defendants for leaking the questions of Publis Personnel Selection Exam in 2010, on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on May 31, 2018. The court sentenced 6 defendants each to 6 years and 3 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court also sentenced 3 defendants to 3 years 1 month and 15 days and fine penalty for ‘chain fraud towards public institutions’. The court acquitted 3 defendants.

(06/013) Elections on June 24, 2018…

On May 31, 2018, HDP (People’s Democratic Party) district co-chair Hamide Coltuklu and 3 people who volunteered as ballot clerks for HDP ((Erkan Acar, Şeyhmus Keleş and Murat Yıldırım) are detained.

On May 31, 2018, a group of MHP (Nationalist Movement Party) members attempted to attack HDP members including PM candidates Kemal Bülbül, Deniz Yıldırım, Erdal Gilgil and Meral Geylani, who visit local shopkeepers in Elmalı district of Antalya. After a short tension, the scene ended without attack.

The Constitutional Court rejected the application of CHP (Republican People’s Party) for cancellation and suspension of execution of several articles of the Amendment Bill on Law on Basic Provisions on Elections and on Electoral Registers, on May 31, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of May 31, 2018 that Sadi Güven, chair of the Supreme Electroal Council, and 6 members have not meet OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) representatives. It is reported that OSCE representatives could meet only 4 members of the Supreme Electoral Court. It is claimed that the chair and 6 members boycott OSCE, based on that “OSCE do not listen to us whatever we tell. We talk for nothing. They go their own way in the end”.
