(02/289) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 24, 2020 that, 5 militants died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in Hakurk area in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on June 1, 2019.

(02/290) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 24, 2020 that, prisoners transferred from Balıkesir Bandırma T Type Prison to Afyon T Type Prison under coercion, were subjected to physical violence of wardens and officials during transfer and at the entrance of prison. It is reported that prisoners went to see a doctor to get a medical report evidencing the violence but they are not given a report, and that they were subjected to physical violence once again, for going to the doctor. It is stated in the news reports that, İsmail Çelik, a prisoner, was subjected to foot whipping, was beaten until he fainted and was put in a solitary cell in an unconscious condition. It is also stated that prisoners were forced to have haircut and moustache cut; to stand in military order during roll-calls, and their petitions were not put in process while 15 of them were put in solitary cells.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 24, 2020 that, prisoners in Balıkesir Bandırma T Type Prison were subjected to physical violence of the wardens for rejecting to be transferred under coercion. Hamza Deniz, a prisoner who had a talk with his family, stated that prisoners were taken out of the wards and were beaten on corridors and at places that surveillance cameras do not cover; some prisoners were subjected to food whipping and were injured due to this; and prisoners who were subjected to physical violence were put in solitary cells.

The police intervened the sit-in protest after press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1203 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on February 24, 2020 at 18.00, and detained 1 person (Merve Demirel). It is learned that Merve Demirel was released on the same day.

(02/292) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the sit-in protest at Bakırköy Square on February 24, 2020 of Nursel Tanrıverdi who rally for 153 weeks to regain her job from which she had been dismissed by state of emergency decree, and detained her by using physical violence. Nursel Tanrıverdi is released on the same day.

The police prevented the press declaration in Konak district of Izmir, which was to be held to protest Izmir Governorate’s ban on solidarity concert for Grup Yorum at Nazım Hikmet Cultural Center on February 24, 2020.

On February 24, 2020, 3 of 10 people who were detained in Tarsus district of Mersin on February 17, 2020, are arrested on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘committing crime on behalf of an illegal organisation’ on February 24, 2020.

İbrahim Gökçek, Grup Yorum band member who is on hunger strike for 252 days, is released from prison according to Istanbul Forensic Institution report which declares he cannot stay in prison, on February 24, 2020 by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 with a ban on leaving the country and leaving his house.

(02/296) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

On February 24, 2020, Professor Mehmet Zencir from Pamukkale University is acquitted by the court, on the case against him for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” on.

571 of 822 cases against academicians for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” are resulted in acquittal as of February 25, 2020.

(02/297) Lawyer on Trial in Istanbul…

The first trial of the case against Celal Çelik, lawyer of Republican People’s Party (CHP) chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ and ‘misconduct’, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 6 on February 24, 2020.

The indictment demands sentence for Celal Çelik, based on petitions he submitted to court for the case against Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and evidence which include tape recordings alleged to be President’s.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to April 24, 2020.

11 people who were detained through the investigation on murder of Rize Director of Security Altuğ Verdi, are arrested by the court on February 24, 2020.

(02/299) Broadcast Ban on News Reports…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 24, 2020 that Ankara Penal Court of Peace No 1 banned sharing of photographs and videos of armoured vehicles of Turkish Armed Forces that are destroyed in Syria and used by Syrian opposition forces, and banned 52 websites and internet users for sharing them.
