(04/184) Non-Prosecution Decision on Mehmet Tunç’s Death…

It is learned from news coverage of April 16, 2018 that non-prosecution decision is made about the official complaint made to Cizre chief public prosecutor’s office about death of Mehmet Tunç. Cizre People’s Assembly co-chair Mehmet Tunç died in the basement of the building where he was stuck during the curfew in Cizre district of Şırnak between December 14, 2015 to March 2, 2016. It is learned that Tunç’s family lawyers will object the verdict.

Turkish Armed Forces announced that 3 soldiers died and 1 soldier is injured in an attack of HPG militants to a military base in rural areas of Şırnak on April 16, 2018.

(04/186) Prisoner Set Himself on Fire During Trial…

On April 16, 2018, during the trial of the case on Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 3, on bombing attack where Derik Sub-governor Fatih Safitürk has died, the defendant Şerif Mesutoğlu set himself on fire by using lighter fluid. Şerif Mesutoğlu was attending the trial via sound and vision system. It is reported that Şerif Mesutoğlu has second and third degree burn and was taken to the hospital and do not have a risk of death. It is learned that an administrative search is opened to investigate how lighter fluid and lighter were brought to the sound and vision room by Şerif Mesutoğlu.

It is learned from news coverage of April 16, 2018 in Manisa T Type Prison in wards for 14 people there stays 26 prisoners and at the entrance of prison, prisoners are subjected to undressed search.

(04/188) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 16, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on April 16, 2018, 3 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Mehmet Dersulu and Selvi Polat) and at 18.00 5 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Mehmet Dersulu, Deniz Yılmaz, Gülnaz Bozkurt and Tolga Yurtaşan) were detained.

Thus in total 8 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on April 16, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(04/189) Blockage of Human Rights Monument in Ankara…

Halkevleri co-chair Dilşat Aktaş has asked to Ankara Governorate via right to information act, the reason of blockage on Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street in Ankara, where “I Want My Job Back!” protests are being held. It is learned from news coverage of April 16, 2018 that the governorate stated that the reason for blocking the monument with barriers is “to protect art and artist” in official response.

(04/190) Preventions Against “We Want Democracy, Not State of Emergency” Protest…

It is learned on April 16, 2018 that the police prevented the sit-in protest in Bitlis as a part of “We Want Democracy, Not State of Emergency” demonstrations of Republican People’s Party (CHP), on the grounds that the application on sit-in protest was rejected by the governorate.

The sit-in protest intended to be held in Istanbul Taksim Square is removed to the entrance of Istiklal Street as a result of police prevention.

rup Yorum band member Dilan Ekin, who was detained at the exit of prison after being released by the court on April 10, 2018, is arrested again by the court on the grounds of the statement of a witness named Berk Ercan, on April 16, 2018.

(04/192) Detained Socialist Youth Associations’ Federation Co-chair…

Socialist Youth Associations’ Federation co-chair Okan Danacı is detained after an ID control in Istanbul on April 16, 2018. It is learned that the reason of detention of Okan Danacı is attending the funeral of Cebrail Günebakan, who died in the bombing attack in Suruç.

(04/193) Police Intervention Against Protest in Ankara…

6 people including Labour Party Mamak district chair are detained after police intervened them during a leaflet distribution about new educational system in front of a school in Ankara on April 16, 2018. It is learned that detainees are released the same day. The names of detainees are: Nermin Canpolat (My Sister Solidarity Association), Elif Taştekin, Canan Farımaz, Deniz Altay (AKADER), Hasan Altun (DEmocratic Alevite Associations) and Seyfi Gündoğan (Labour Party Mamak co-chair).

 

04/194) Person Detained in Raid in Hakkari…

t is learned that security forces have raided Geçimli village of Hakkari, conducted a search in 2 houses and detained a person named Abdullah Ölmez on April 16, 2018. It is learned that Abdullah Ölmez is taken to Hakkari Police Headquarters, however the reason for detention is unknown. It is also reported that a warrant is issued for 1 more person as well.

(04/195) Trials of HDP PM’s…

he case against HDP former co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş and Ankara PM Sırrı Süreyya Önder on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26 on the speeches they made at 2013 Newroz meetings in Istanbul, continued to be held on April 16, 2018. Demirtaş and Önder did not attend the trial. The court rejected all demands of the lawyers including expert investigation demand on Selahattin Demirtaş’s and Sırrı Süreyya Önder’s speeches, and adjourned the trial to April 30, 2018 by giving extra time to Selahattin Demirtaş for his defence for the last time.

(04/196) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On April 16, 2018, 11 soldiers on active duty are detained through a Konya based investigation. The total number of detainees in this investigation raised up to 55.

It is learned that Zafer Kılınç, former prosecutor dismissed by the state of emergency decree is detained in Edirne for attempting illegally flee to Greece on April 16, 2018.

2 people (Mehmet Elibol and Ayşe Elibol) who were detained in Kırşehir are arrested by the court on April 16, 2018.

6 of 11 people detained in Malatya are arrested by the court on April 16, 2018. 5 people is released on juridical control conditions.

04/197) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against Colonel Emre Fırat, former chief of staff in Kayseri Gendarmerie Regional Command, on Kayseri Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on April 16, 2018. The court sentenced Emre Fırat to heavy life sentence for ‘violating the Constitution’.

The case against USA citizen and priest Andrew Craig Brunson, for ‘committing crime on behalf of an illegal organisation but not being a member’, and ‘spying’ on Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 2 started on April 16, 2018. Andrew Craig Brunson attended the trial and made his defence. It is learned that Brunson has fainted during the trial. After defence hearings the court decided on continuation of detention and adjourned the trial to May 7, 2018.

The case against Adem Sarı and Yavuz Sarı on Antalya Heavy Penal Court No 9 continued to be held on April 16, 2018. The court released the defendants on juridical control conditions and on 25o thousand Turkish liras bail and adjourned the trial.

(04/198) Special Security Area in Hatay…

Hatay Governorate made a declaration on April 16, 2018 and announced that the areas on Syrian border are special security areas between April 18 to May 2, 2018. The governorate banned photographing, video recording, broadcasting, interviewing and entrance of all vehicles and people in these areas except being permitted by security forces.
