(01/156) Allegation of Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Istanbul…

People’s Law Office announced on January 13, 2019 that, Boran Deniz Erdemir, a client of them, was forced to give statement under pressure at Istanbul Police Headquarters where he was under custody. It is also reported that while Boran Deniz Erdemir was giving information to his lawyer about torture and ill-treatment he was subjected to, the police interrupted the visit and took the lawyer out of the room by physical violence.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2019 that, Abdullah Zeydan, former MP of People’s Democratic Party (HDP) was given by Edirne F Type Prison administration, a penalty of prevention of activities for 1 month, for going on a 10-day hunger strike to support HDP Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair Leyla Güven.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 14, 2019 that, Ahmet Gerez, who was subjected to physical violence while being transferred from Oltu T Type Prison to Trabzon Beşikdüzü T Type Closed Prison and who was then put into a solitary cell, went on an indefinite hunger strike.

(01/159) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 797 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 14, 2019 at 13.30, and at 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on January 14, 2019, 2 people (Derviş Lermi and Nazan Bozkurt) and at 18.00 2 people (Derviş Lermi and Nazan Bozkurt) were detained.

Thus in total 4 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on January 14, 2019. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(01/160) Police Intervention Against Workers’ Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the protest of Okmeydanı Research and Education Hospital construction workers for not receiving their wages, which was to be held in front of the contractor Taş Yapı company on January 14, 2019. 6 workers are detained in police intervention. The names of detainees are: Yunus Özgür, Özkan Özkanlı, Serkan Kaplan, Halil Cihan Özbilen, Ramazan Yıldız and Mehmet Zeybek.

8 people who were detained in police intervention into HDP Youth Assembly members who celebrate Serê Salê, new year according to the Julian calendar, in Sur district of Diyarbakır on January 13, 2019; are released after statement procedures at the police on January 14, 2019.

(01/162) Detained Executives of HDP in Istanbul…

HDP’s Zeytinburnu, Üsküdar and Çekmeköy district co-chairs who were detained in in house raids in Istanbul on January 13, 2019, are released after statement procedures at the police on January 14, 2019. It is learned that the reason of detention is the banners hung at district offices to support HDP Hakkari MP and DTK co-chair Leyla Güven’s hunger strike. The names of detained and then released people are: HDP Zeytinburnu district co-chair Samet Ayas, Üsküdar district co-chair Hakkı Cengiz, Çekmeköy district co-chairs Selma Korkmaz and Halil Salık.

On January 14, 2019, 3 members of HDP (Veysi Al, Lokman Akıcı and Furkan Akıcı) who apply stickers on the walls to support HDP Hakkari MP and DTK co-chair Leyla Güven in Bağcılar district of Istanbul, are detained. It is reported that 3 people are released on the same day.

(01/164) Arrested Person for ‘Making Propaganda for an Illegal Organisation’ in Istanbul…

Serap Mutlu, a person who was detained at a notary’s office on the grounds of a detention warrant, is arrested by the court on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ on January 14, 2019. It is learned from the news reports that the reason of arrest is a yellow-red-green scarf she wore at her mother’s funeral.

Musician Ferhat Tunç who is detained on a warrant at Istanbul Atatürk Airport, on January 12, 2019, upon arriving there from Germany, is released by the court on the same day.

(01/166) Publishing House Employees on Trial in Istanbul…

The case against Kasım Zengin, grant holder of Gün Publishing House and 20 of the employees, on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26 is held on January 14, 2019. Gün Publishing House used to publish Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, and was disponed to Saving Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF). The prosecutor declared the legal opinion at the trial and demanded sentence for 12 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and for 9 people on the charge of ‘knowingly aiding an illegal organisation’. The court decided to continue detention of 9 people and adjourned the trial to February 11, 2019.

Gün Publishing House was disponed to TMSF on March 28, 2018 and the employees who were detained on the same day were arrested on April 5, 2018.

(01/167) Newspaper Employee on Trial in Mardin…

The indictment of Mardin Public Prosecutor’s Office against Çetin Kurşun, an employee of Azadiya Welat newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is accepted by Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 14, 2019. The indictment demands Çetin Kurşun to be sentenced for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The first trial will be held on February 7, 2019.

The case against 38 people for participating in “December 17-25 Protests Against Corruption”, started to be held on Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 22 on January 14, 2019. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to April 4, 2019.

(01/169) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 14, 2019, 3 people including owners of Şeker Piliç company are detained in house raids in Balıkesir; 9 people are detained in Tokat; 10 military members on active duty are detained in operations covering 9 cities through a Tunceli based investigation.

10 of 14 people including military members on active duty who were detained through a Kayseri based investigation are arrested by the court on January 14, 2019. It is reported that 12 people are still under custody.

Business person Murat Sivrikaya who was detained in Izmir is arrested by the court on January 14, 2019.

Diyarbakır Governorate made a declaration on January 14, 2019 and announced curfew in 13 villages of Lice district as of 06.00 on January 14, 2019 until a further notice. Diyarbakır Governorate made another declaration on the same day and lifted the curfew as of 24.00 on January 14, 2019. The villages under curfew are: Serince, Kayacık, Uçarı, Ziyaret, Esenler, Ortaç, Yalaza, Çavundur, Dolunay, Bağlan, Kabakaya, Kutlu and Oyuklu villages.
