(01/016) Prevention of Right to Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 2, 2019 that, Selami Keleş, a prisoner with epilepsy in Düzce T Type Prison, was forced to get his medication in the aisle instead of his ward; and that Selami Keleş, rejecting to be forced to do so, could not get his medication for a month.

(01/017) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 785 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on January 2, 2019 at 13.30, and detained 2 people (Acun Karadağ and Nazan Bozkurt). It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(01/018) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

Türkan Albayrak, who was dismissed from her job at Sarıyer district Health Department, on the grounds of ‘personnel security investigation’ and ‘archive search’, on August 3, 2018; made a press declaration to regain her job on January 2, 2019, and attempted for a sit-in protest in front of Health Department. The police intervened into the sit-in and detained Türkan Albayrak. It is learned that Türkan Albayrak was released the same day. It is the 68th time of detention of Türkan Albayrak.

(01/019) HDP Executives in Istanbul Are Called for Statement…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 2, 2019 that, HDP executives in Istanbul are called for statement by the police, through an investigation opened against them for the banners hung on People’s Democratic Party (HDP) district offices in Istanbul. The banners on which “Leyla Güven is right in her hunger strike against isolation. Absolute isolation must end” is written were about hunger strike of Leyla Güven, HDP’s Hakkari MP and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) co-chair. It is learned that the investigation against HDP executives is on the charge of “opposing to the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911”.

(01/020) Detained Political Party Executives in Adana…

5 people (People’s Democratic Congress (HDK) Adana spokesperson Olcay Süzgün, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Adana deputy chair and Adana Yeni Yaşam Association chair Hasan Kocaman, HDP Adana executive Suphiye Bayav, DBP Adana provincial executive Güle Bal and Socialist Refoundation Party (SYKP) Adana chair Mehmet Ali Gülşen) who were detained in Adana on December 30, 2018, for participating in a 2-day hunger strike to support HDP Hakkari MP and DTK co-chair Leyla Güven; are released by the court on judicial control conditions on January 2, 2019.

(01/021) The Case Against a Police Officer for Death of Mehmet Tektekin in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 2, 2019 that, the indictment of Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office against police officer U.K., driving the anti-riot water cannon which hit and killed Mehmet Tektekin in Diyarbakır on June 6, 2018, is accepted by the court.

The indictment demands a penalty of imprisonment for a term of 2 years to 6 years for U.K. on the charge of ‘reckless killing’.

(01/022) The Case Against an Academician for Declaring Ministry of Health’s Report…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 2, 2019 that, Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office has prepared an indictment against Assist. Professor Bülent Şık, for declaring a report of the Minsitry of Health, which covers a research on cancer conducted in Antalya, Ergene and Dilovası in between 2011-2015.  The findings of the report were not published by Ministry of Health, although it was carried out by the Ministry of Health, Public Health Agency of Turkey. Assist. Professor Bülent Şık then declared the findings of the report in an article series published on Cumhuriyet newspaper.

The indictment demands a penalty of imprisonment for a term of 5 years to 12 years for Bülent Şık on the charges of ‘disclosure of secrets about duty’, ‘provision of prohibited information’ and ‘disclosure of prohibited information’.

Assist. Professor Bülent Şık is a signatory of the petition “We will not be a party to this crime”, and was dismissed from his job at Akdeniz University by the state of emergency decree No 677 issued on November 22, 2016.

(01/023) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against 49 people including 21 arrestees, who were employees and executives of schools closed by state of emergency decrees, is held on Denizli Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 2, 2019. The court sentenced 28 people to jail penalties from 8 years 1 month 15 days to 9 years 4 months and 15 days for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court sentenced 7 people to jail penalties from 1 year 6 months and 22 days to 2 years and 1 month for ‘knowingly aiding an illegal organisation’. The court acquitted 5 defendants and separated the cases of 9 people. The court released 10 people upon the verdict.

(01/024) Special Security Zone in Hakkari…

Hakkari Governorate made a declaration on January 2, 2019 and announced that 31 areas with given coordinates in central, Çukurca, Şemdinli and Yüksekova districts as special security zones as of January 4 to January 18, 2019.

(01/025) The Supreme Election Council Decision on Political Parties Taking Part in Local Elections…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 2, 2019 that The Supreme Election Council (YSK) declared that 13 of 82 political parties are entitled to take part in local elections to be held on March 31, 2019. The names of those 13 parties are: Justice and Development Party (AKP), Independent Turkey Party (BTP), Great Union Party (BBP), Republican People’s Party (CHP), Democrat Party (DP), Democratic Left Party (DSP), People’s Democratic Party (HDP), Free Cause Party (HÜDA PAR), İYİ Party, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Felicity Party (SP), Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), Vatan Party.

It is learned that Labour Party (EMEP) and Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP) which were not entitled to take part in elections will appeal to YSK decision.
