(12/314) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 24, 2018 that, 1 militant died in a clash between HPG militants and security forces on September 6, 2018 in rural areas of Nusaybin district of Mardin.

(12/315) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 24, 2018 that Mülkiye Birtane, former MP of People’s Democratic Party (HDP) and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) council member who is kept in Kars T Type Closed Prison, is transferred under coercion to Elazığ T Type Women’s Closed Prison.

(12/316) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 776 days to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on December 24, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on December 24, 2018, 2 people (Nazan Bozkurt and Acun Karadağ) and at 18.00 2 people (Cemal Öksüz and Bengisu Demirel) were detained.

Thus in total 4 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on December 24, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(12/317) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

Türkan Albayrak, who was dismissed from her job at Sarıyer district Health Department, on the grounds of ‘personnel security investigation’ and ‘archive search’, on August 3, 2018; made a press declaration to regain her job on December 24, 2018 and attempted for a sit-in protest in front of Health Department. The police intervened into the sit-in and detained Türkan Albayrak. It is learned that Türkan Albayrak was released the same day. It is the 64th time of detention of Türkan Albayrak.

On December 24, 2018, the police intervened Nursel Tanrıverdi, who wanted to hold a sit-in protest at Bakırköy Square in Istanbul, to regain her job from which she was dismissed by a state of emergency decree; and detained her.

(12/319) Person Being Detained in Diyarbakır for Hanging Banners…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 24, 2018 that Serhat Parlak, brother of arrested journalist Ferhat Parlak, is detained on the grounds of ‘provoking the people’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’, for he hung banners in Silvan district of Diyarbakır on December 21, 2018. The banners were saying “Journalist Ferhat Parlak, Who Revealed the Fraud in Sivan Municipality, is Not Brought to the Court Since April 10, 2018”. It is learned that Serhat Parlak was released on the same day with a fine of 260 Turkish Liras.

The indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against Austrian journalist Max Zirngast, and Social Freedom Party (TÖP) members Mithatcan Türetken and Hatice Göz, is accepted by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 26, on December 24, 2018. The court decided to release 3 people with a ban on leaving the country and to hold the first hearing on April 11, 2019.

Max Zirngast, Mithatcan Türetken and Hatice Göz were detained in house raids in Ankara and Hatay on September 11, 2018 and all were arrested on September 21, 2018.

(12/321) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On December 24, 2018, 14 former police officers dismissed by state of emergency decrees are detained in operations covering 9 cities through an Ağrı based investigation; and 14 teachers are detained in Ankara for using ByLock.

9 of 11 people who were detained through a Muğla based investigation are arrested by the court on December 24, 2018. 2 people are released on judicial control conditions.

(12/322) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against Ali Alçık, former member of The Supreme Court who was in the court boards of “Sledgehammer coup plot” and “Istanbul KCK Main Case”, is held on December 24, 2018 on Penal Department No 9 of The Supreme Court. The court sentenced Ali Alçık to 12 years for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court decided to continue detention of Ali Alçık.

The final trial of the case against Professor İbrahim Cerrah, former member of Security General Directorate Committee of Ethics and former Police Academy Scientific Research and Editorial Board Chair, is held on Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 18 on December 24, 2018. The court sentenced the defendant to 12 years and 9 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court decided to continue detention of the defendant.

The final trial of the case against Hasan Günaydın, lawyer of Fetullah Gülen, Zaman newspaper and Samanyolu television channel, is held on December 24, 2018 on Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32. The court sentenced the defendant to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and decided to release the defendant upon verdict.

The Ministry of Interior made a declaration on December 24, 2018 and announced that 302 social media accounts were investigated between December 17 and December 24, 2018; and legal proceedings have been initiated against 270 people within this week.

(12/324) Curfew in Lice…

Diyarbakır Governorate made a declaration on December 24, 2018 and lifted the curfew in 2 villages and 5 hamlets of Lice district as of 24.00 on December 24, 2018, which was announced as of 06.00 on December 23, 2018. The curfew is lifted on following villages and hamlets: Birlik and Şenlik villages; Miaran Komu, Kılaraş Komu, Şakan, Ayaz, Akçapınar hamlets.

(12/325) Journalist and Anchor Fatih Portakal is Threatened by Ottoman Centres Members…

On December 24, 2018, a group of Ottoman Centres (Osmanlı Ocakları) members made a declaration outside Fox TV channel’s headquarters in Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul, to protest news anchor Fatih Portakal. Kadir Canpolat, founding chair of Ottoman Centres, stated the following: “Those who disturb the peace in our country at every turn should know that at least 52 per cent is waiting in their homes champing at the bit”.

President Tayyip Erdoğan has said: “Somebody shows up, I do not know if he is orange, mandarin or citrus [with reference to Fatih Portakal’s surname which means orange, tn.], calls people to streets. Know your place. If you do not know your place, this nation will hit you in the back of your neck” in a speech he made in Konya on December 17, 2018 targeting Fox TV news anchor Fatih Portakal.
